The organic sector in Wallonia is in rapid development. For many years, the sector has continued to grow and develop.

Below you will fi nd information on the development of the agricul-tural sector in Wallonia considered alongside Belgium as a whole.

On 31 December 2014 there were 1,630 producers in Bel-gium, representing an increase of +7.7% compared with 2013. There are still many more organic producers in Wallonia (79%) than in Flanders (21%).

The total usable agricultural area (UAA) devoted to organic production in Belgium at the end of

2014 was 66,693 ha, representing 5% of the total usable agricultural area in the region.

For the region as a whole, organic farms represent 4.5%of the total number of farms in Belgium: 1.4%

of farms in Flanders and 10.1% in Wallonia.

Production in Wallonia reached a milestone in 2014. At pre-sent, a tenth of all farmers in Wallonia are organic! In fact, on 31 December 2014, Wallonia counted 1,287 organic farmers: an increase of +7.7% in the number of producers.

Market gardening increased by +27% between 2013 and 2014, and fruit production slightly increased (+7%).

The organic porcine sec tor in Wallonia has reached a critical stage! Since 2010 , the pork

industry has experienced a marked decline: -43% in 4 years. Between 2013 and 2014 , the overall number of organic pork farms dropped by -5.6% and by -25.5% for the number of organic sows farmed in Wallonia. The sector counts no more than 439 organic sows , versus 1,005 in 2010 (-56%). This decrease is due to a lack of profi -tability in organic pork farming speculation in Wallonia and not the result of a lack of demand in these Belgian sectors - quite the opposite!

The total number of organic cattle has seen consistent growth since 2006. It increased by +2% between 2013 and 2014 and doubled between 2007 and 2014 .

The ovine and goat sector has advanced consistently since 2009, with significant growth of +22% between 2013 and 2014 . This represents the largest increase in 2014 in terms of organic farming.

The poultry sector is in full expansion: the number of broilers increased by +9.1% between 2013 and 2014, and the number of layers by +9.6%.

Biowallonie is the governing structure for the organic sector. Its task is to supervise producers, stimulate and encourage

the conversion of organic players and, lastly, to develop the sector by connecting players and creating sales outlets.

The non-profi t organisation works with all players in the chain (producers, processors, distributors, retailers, restaurants, etc.)to ensure the monitoring and development of the sector and the marketing of organic products.
