DESIGNING SPACES FOR NORMALLY- TO HIGHLY GIFTED PERSONS WITH AUTISM,ASPERGER’S SYNDROME AND ASD-RELATED DISORDERS.

A significant higher concentration of persons with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) has been discovered since 2003 in the Dutch town of Eindhoven than in the rest of the country. In Silicon Valley (California, USA) a similar development has been noted. There have been suggestions of a possible connection between these two areas, which both host advanced high-tech industries. Philips is based in Eindhoven, while the world largest software-development operations – including Apple and Microsoft – are based in California. High SAT scores in Maths, gifted in the exact sciences, both of which well serve high-tech industries, can often be found in people with ASD as one of the symptoms and more specifically in individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome (Oops, wrong planet!’) and High-Functioning Autism. This explains the particular position of the Eindhoven region in this issue – involuntarily boosted by Anton Philips...The number of people with autism here is still growing, because a) there is growing awareness of the syndrome, so more people can be diagnosed in an early stage, and b) since it is a genetically communicable disorder, the offspring of people with ASD can be affected as well.

This specifically local phenomenon was more than enough reason to take an interest in the spatial needs and requirements that result from this ASD state of mind. Spatial answers/solutions originating from this perspective might even be very interesting and inspiring for non-autistic people. In addition, it is of course an attempt to facilitate eventual needs for lear-ning independent functioning – a process that needs intensive training and coaching. It is crucial that this can take place in a proper tempo, rhythm and spatial structure. The location should be easily accessible by personal and public transport. Being situated on the same side of the street as the train or bus station is important for people who have problems orienting themselves. We found such a location in the former Post Office on Stations-plein and the nearby Villa ‘De Meijerij’, but the project has not yet been realised– it remains a feasible proposal.

People with autism are as much individuals as those without. This also means it is not possible to offer everyone with ASD – in this project – aperfectly tailored response on spatial issues. It is mainly a point of depar-ture for inventive research on practical and appealing spatial solutions that could be effective for the largest possible group of special people.

RUIMTE ONTWERPENVOOR NORMAAL- TOT HOOGBEGAAFDE MENSEN MET AUTISME,HET SYNDROOM VAN ASPERGER EN ASS-GERELATEERDE STOORNISSEN.

Sinds ca. 2003 wordt er in Eindhoven een hogere concentratie aan mensen met ASS (Autisme Spectrum Stoornis) gesignaleerd dan in de rest van Nederland. Ook o.a. in Silicon Valley ( California, VS) is een dergelijke ontwikkeling geconstateerd. Er worden verbanden gelegd tussen de aard van deze lokaties, die beide een specialisatiegebied zijn in de industrie van advanced high tecnology: Philips in Eindhoven en 's werelds grootste softwareproductiecentrum in Silicon Valley. Hoogbegaafdheid in wiskundige en aanverwante exakte kennis, die uitstekend kan worden ingezet bij hoogtechnologische werkzaamheden, kan een nevenverschijsel zijn bij ASS, en dan m.n. bij mensen met het Syndroom van Asperger (‘Oops, Wrong Planet!’), een lichtere variant van autisme. Dit verklaart de specifieke positie van Eindhoven in deze kwestie - door Anton Philips onwillekeurig in gang gezet... Het aantal mensen met autisme is momenteel steeds groeiend doordat er a. meer kennis is omtrent ASS en er zodoende vaker en eerder gediganosticeerd kan worden en b. ASS een erfelijke stoornis is, dus Het nageslacht kan hier eveneens mee te maken krijgen.

E.e.a. is aanleiding om in te gaan op de ruimtelijke behoeften die metdeze mentale staat samenhangen. Ruimtelijke antwoorden/oplossingen, die vanuit dit perspektief ontstaan, zijn misschien minstens zo bruikbaar en inspirerend ook voor niet-autisten. Daarnaast is het uiteraard een poging om tegemoet te komen aan moge-lijke behoeften van leren zelfstandig te kunnen funktioneren – een pro-ces dat veel begeleide oefening behoeft. Het is cruciaal dat dit in heel eigen tempo, ritme en ruimtelijke struktuur kan gebeuren. Voor het kunnen slagen van zo’n vrijplaats zou de locatie makkelijk be-reikbaar moeten zijn, zowel met eigen als met openbaar vervoer. Deligging aan hetzelfde voetpad als de uitgang van het station/busstation zou een gedroomde situering zijn voor diegenen die zich moeilijk kunnen orienteren in een nieuwe omgeving. Zo’n lokatie hebben we gevonden, zij het nu nog fiktief – een gefundeerd voorstel.

Mensen met autisme zijn net zoveel individu als diegenen zonder. Dat betekent dat - in dit project - niet voor iedereen een perfekt op maat gesneden ruimtelijke oplossing kan worden geboden. Dit projekt is vooral een onderzoek naar een aantal toe te passen ruimtelijke varianten en details, dat voor een (liefst groot) aantal mensen zou kunnen werken.

THE TASK

Nine 2008 graduate candidates of the Perk Institute of Interior Designhave both studied and been instructed/coached on the phenomenon ofAutism Spectrum Disorder.As an interested designer and not a medical specialist on ASD, theintended professional approach involves a willingness to accept specificcircumstances and requirements and to convert these into visualproposals.So, in relation to the spatial features of the suggested buildings, they haveenvisaged specific spaces and challenging solutions for this target groupthat can be so much better supported in everyday functionality byadequate (and visually challenging!) spatial settings.

Two separate, but related assignments have been conceived, intended tocover the needs of both young and adolescent (evt. adult) individuals, fromnormal to highly gifted, with ASD:

‘ALL INTERIOR / WORLD IN ME’Centre for support for children with ASD and their carers (1 proposal).

All the solutions and designs are part of ongoing research and arefictional, but they have been developed into potentially realisableproposals.

Negen kandidaten Vormgeving ‘08 van PERK Interieuropleidingenhebben voor hun afstudeerproject vastgebeten in het fenomeen autisme, en meer specifiek Autisme Spectrum Stoornissen: ASS, om voor deze groep ruimtelijke voorstellen en/of oplossingente ontwerpen. Zowel door inlezen en zelfstudie. als ook met coaching en instructies is getracht zoveel mogelijk inzicht te krijgen in de ruimtelijke faktoren die van belang zijn voor mensen die in meer of mindere mate te maken hebben met de gevolgen van deze aandoening. Als geinteresseerde ontwerper, en niet als medisch/verzorgend specialist op dit gebied,ligt de beoogde professionele benadering in de bereidheid om specifiekeomstandigheden en eisen te aanvaarden en aan te grijpen voor een authentiek overwogen ruimtelijk antwoord.

Reagerend op de karakteristieke ruimten en kenmerken van de panden, die alslokatie hiervoor zijn gezocht, zijn er uitdagende en inventieve voorstellen ontstaan voor deze doelgroep, die m.i. in het dagelijks functioneren zoveel beterondersteund kan worden door betrokken (en spannend!) vormgegeven ruimten.

Twee verschillende, aan elkaar gerelateerde praktische opgaven zijn nu hiervoor ontwikkeld, met een bedoeld bereik van de heel jonge tot en met de adolescente (evt.volwassen) personen met ASS:

OPGAVE / LOKATIE

‘ANTONZICHT’ en het kinderdagcentrum ‘WORLD IN ME’ zijn als opgave een onderdeel van een omvangrijk af-studeerproject 2008, voor zowel vormgevers als stylisten, met herbestemmingsvoorstellen vanuit de wederkerige onderwijsvisie van ‘PERK Interieuropleidingen’: dat de opbrengst van de inspanningen van de studenten uiteinde-lijk kan terugvloeien in de schoot van de regio en stad Eindhoven zelf.De interieur-gerelateerde ontwerpopgave wordt gekoppeld aan onderzoek naar mogelijke herbestemming van pan-den die een beter lot verdienen, die ten onrechte bestemmingsloos leegstaan of waar je een gebruik van gunt dat recht doet aan bijzondere architectonische kwaliteiten of lokatie. Ze biedt ook de mogelijkheid om fictief - dus on-afhankelijk - te verkennen of een bepaalde funktieverandering van een pand een gunstig effekt op de direkte om-geving zou kunnen opleveren. In deze zin wordt aan het beroep van interieurvormgever vanuit een sociaal-maat-schappelijk standpunt inhoud gegeven, naast het vereiste esthetisch en bouwtechnisch inzicht en een authentieke ruimtelijke verbeelding.Het totale herbestemmingsproject betreft twee bestaande markante panden in het centrum van Eindhoven:het voormalig hoofdostkantoor (links) aan het Stationsplein en villa ‘De Meijerij’ (rechts) in de Dommelstraat . Met name het postkantoor verkeert ten tijde van het project in een onbestemde staat, de andere betreft vooral een ge-droomde architectonische medespeler en locatie voor een gerelateerde bestemming op steenworp afstand. Doel van dit plan is het inblazen van nieuw leven in dit centrale stadsgebied met levendige en sociaal-cultureel georiënteerde functies (kennis, nieuws, ontmoeting), waarbinnen functies als zorg en ondersteuning (hier m.b.t.autisme) een vanzelfsprekende plaats gaan innemen. De nabijheid van de stations voor openbaar vervoer (bus, trein) en de miminale loopafstand van daaruit zonder gevaarlijke oversteekpunten,, maakt deze lokaties uiterst ge-schikt voor mensen met orientatieproblemen in tijd, ruimte en plaats, zoals kan voorkomen bij mensen met ASS.

ASSIGNMENT / LOCATION

‘ANTONZICHT’ and the ‘WORLD IN ME’ children’s centre formed part of a comprehensive 2008 graduation project, as envisioned by ‘PERK Interieuropleidingen’: the fruit of the students’ efforts should benefit the host city itself. In this way the profession of spatial and interior design could contribute to finding solutions and sugges-tions for the problems and spatial issues affecting the city and region of Eindhoven today. Study projects like these can refine and increase the level of inventivity at inquiries concerning city-developmentAnd planning. The social concern of ‘PERK Interieuropleidingen’ is to contribute to a coherent and stable regional living-environment, through independent design-proposals for reusing existing spaces - based on practical insight and creative wit. The two research projects presented here, were initiated to investigate the consequences and opportunities for interior and architectural design through realistic suggestions while serving the benefit of users with autism or Aspergers Syndrome /ASD in this region.Both projects, one for persons aged 15+, one for children and their carers, have been accomodated in exisiting buildings the centre of Eindhoven: the former Central Post Office building on Stationsplein and ‘de Meijerij’ villa (right). Situated close to the train station and other public transport facilities, these buildings – now in a pitiful state – could provide social revitalization for this area by giving them a health-care and educational support function. The easy routing and clear orientation points between the two locations and the station, make them a favourable place for persons with a sensory or orientational impairment, as can be seen in people with ASD.

‘Normality is already that complicated’

‘The references for my design have been the thoughts andexperiences of people with autism and comparing them to the realityof daily life they have to deal with. For them our normality is alreadyconsidered asiIncomprehensible and uninterpretable, since it doesnlive up to their trusted criteria of an environment or utensil.Therefore I have aimed at an environmental picture that is mostlycommon to everyone -Grandma, DIY store, the neighbour, your parents home - to be surenot to differ basically from their familiar framework. An emphaticchoice has been made to minimalise the choices to be taken, in orderto limit the experiences by appealing for instance only to one sensoryorgan.

The choices have been simplified as much as possible and thus helpto make the environment having any significance. Starting from a as‘normal and familiar situation, this design can contribute to a betterunderstanding for autistic people of the world around them. And thisformal language of interior design can easily be inserted in their ownhome environment.

When several spaces are introduced for the same functions, onealways can avoid the one which conflict the most with the individualautistic person. This concept I have developed does not depend onany particular building, since it is not the architecture that shapes, butthe way the interior is treated.’

‘Gewoon is al ingewikkeld genoeg’

‘Ik ben in mijn ontwerp uitgegaan van de gedach-ten- en belevingswereld van mensen met autisme en heb deze getoetst aan de dagelijkse realiteit waar zij mee te maken hebben. Het voor ons nor-male is daarbij voor hen al regelmatig onbegrijp-baar en on-interpreteerbaar, omdat het niet voldoet aan de voor hen bekende definitie-criteria van eenomgeving of gebruiksvoorwerp.Daarom ben ik zoveel mogelijk uitgegaan van een vormgeving die bij iedereen is terug te vinden - oma, praxis, de buurman, bij je ouders thuis - om op diemanier zo min mogelijk af te wijken van het bij hen bekende kader. Hierbij is nadrukkelijk gekozen om het aantal keuzemogelijkheden te minimaliseren, en zo de ervaringen te beperken door bijvoorbeeld in een ruimte maar éen zintuig aan te spreken.

De keuzemogelijkheid is zoveel mogelijk vereenvou-digd en draagt zo bij aan de betekenisverleningvan de omgeving. Door daarbij uit te gaan van een zo ‘normaal’ en herkenbaar mogelijke situatie, draagt dit ontwerp bij aan het beter begrijpen van de rest van de wereld door mensen met autisme.Ook kan deze vormgeving zonodig eenvoudigingepast worden in hun eigen woonomgeving.’

COOKBOOK FOR PEOPLE WITH AUTISM

‘For reaching people with autism how to cook, a cookbook specially written for this target group is essential.This cookbook should contain the following chapters:

1. General actions/techniques with regard to the preparationsThis includes for example: how to clean different types of vegetables: how to peel potatoes, to clean beans, to scrap carrots and how to remove rotten or bruised spots from the vegetables.

2. Which kitchen utensils to acquire and what to use them for; which are functionally interchangeable.

3. The basic preparation of the different components, explained in detail, for instance mentioning putting water in the pan and turning off the gas when necessary between the different acts/steps, the precise amount of salt needed.

4. General rules regarding the cooking, such as:- how to respond to the situation when the weights differ slightly from those mentioned, regarding the nature of the recipe,- how to deal with preparation times, - what to do when the recipe is not for the desired number of people, - the dos and don’ts - what you should never do in cooking and what to watch carefully.- which size of pan to use for certain cooking,- what to do when the act of cooking gets interrupted, for instance by the doorbell.

5. Which are the issues to always decide yourself, such as amount of salt added, or at what point a vegetable or pasta is done

6. What to do when you don’t know what to do anymore - in order to guarantee safety and yet decent food

7. How could the furnishing (fixed and loose) support this act of cooking.

8. To design the cookbook in such a way that it can tailored to the very specific needs of the target audience.

Objective of this cookbook is to see to it that the person who cooks will ultimately be able to use recipes from regular cookbooks: to learn to interpret the prescription, to learn to measure the ingredients and how to deal with unexpected situations during cooking.Since the development of this cookbook was not included in the graduation terms, this will be continued in the future in case of interest from the target group.’

KOOKBOEK VOOR MENSEN MET AUTISME

‘Om mensen met autisme goed te kunnen leren koken is een kookboek, speciaal geschreven voor deze doelgroep, noodzakelijk.Dit kookboek zou de volgende hoofdstukken moeten bevatten:

1. Algemene technieken tav voorbereidingen. - b.v. hoe aardappels te schillen, hoe boontjes schoon te maken, hoe worteltjes te schrappen incl.het verwijderen van rotte plekjes en het wassen van de groente.

2. Welke kookattributen heb je en waar gebruik je ze voor; welke zijn onderling uitwisselbaar qua functie.

3. De basisbereiding van de verschillende componenten, uitgewerkt tot in elke detail b.v. het benoemen van water inde pan doen, maar ook het uitzetten van het gas tussenverschillende stappen in, exact benoemen hoeveel zout of water er bij de bereiding nodig is.

4. Algemene regels inzake koke, zoals:- hoe ga je om met iets afwijkende gewichten gekeken naar het recept,- hoe ga je om met bereidingstijden,- wat wanneer een recept niet voor het juiste aantal personen is,- welke dingen moet je nooit doen en waar moet je altijd op letten, - welke grootte pan gebruik je waar voor,- wat wanneer je koken onderbroken wordt door b.v. de voordeurbel.

5. Welke dingen moet je als koker altijd zelf beslissen b.v. hoeveelheid zout, gewenste gaarheid.

6. Wat te doen wanneer je het niet meer weet, om veiligheid en toch fatsoenlijk eten te kunnen waarborgen.

7. Hoe zou de keukeninrichting (vast en los) dit proces verder kunnen ondersteunen.

8. Het kookboek zo ontwerpen dat het een maatwerk-kookboekje kan worden.

Doel van het kookboek is om, met de uitgebreidere uitleg omtrent het kookproces, er voor te zorgen dat de koker op den duur ook gebruik kan maken van kookreceptuur uitReguliere kookboeken: (het leren interpreteren van receptuur, het ruimer leren categoriseren van ingredienten en hulpmiddelen en het leren omgaan met onverwachte kooksituaties.Omdat de uitwerking van dit kookboek niet binnen de afstudeeropdracht. viel, zal dit bij interesse van de doelgroep in de toekomst verder doorontwikkeld worden.’

‘In order to feel comfortable in a non-home environment, it can be an advantage if visitors bring their own objects and devices; or can select specific devices of preference, to use in the place itself.For an autistic person this faculty of choice could even be crucial for his/her acceptance of the place. A hypersensitive response to certain colours and/or surface textures, can either damage or ameliorate this acceptance. So since this place has a pastime and leisure function, the answer to this has been found in its accessory objects.’

‘Om je ergens op je gemak te kunnen voelenMoet de omgeving en de spullen die je gebruiktzelf kunnen kiezen, of je moet je eigen spullen mee kunnen nemen. Dit geldt zeker voor iemand met autisme.Wanneer hij/zij een bepaalde stof voelt, een bepaalde geur ruikt of een bepaald geluid hoort,ervaart de autist als het ware de eigen vertrouwde omgeving en voelt zich dan minder gespannen.

Omdat dit een vrijetijdscentrum voor jonge autisten Is, moeten zij zich er ook optimaal kunnen ontspan-nen. Autisten hebben vaak moeite met nieuwe situaties en omgevingen. Dankzij de mogelijkheid om eigen materialen en kleuren van gebruiks-voorwerpen te kiezen, zouden zij zich hier snel thuis kunnen gaan voelen.

De vormgeving van het centrum zal niet de oplossing zijn voor de problemen van de autistische jongeren, maar het kan hen misschien wel helpen om hun verblijf er zo plezierig en ontspannen mogelijk te maken.’

Tableware, crockery.Mugs, dishes, cups, saucers, bowls and place-mats: offered in complete sets in different colour-ranges to use in the building and to be found in the kitchen where the sets are arranged in a orderly display. The obligation to clean the items, return them after use and to put them back in their designated storage place also forms part of the training to acquire skills for a self-sufficient housekeeping.

Met een rood fluwelen gordijn, een breedbeeldprojectiescherm en een telescopisch inschuif-bare tribune in de hoge zijwand kan deze sport-zaal met een paar handelingen worden om-gebouwd tot een ad hoc bioscoopzaal(zie pag.19).Evenals de doeken als stoelbekleding kan erook hier worden gekozen voor een zitkussen inde favoriete kleur. Pre-thinking and structuring

‘In order to provide a reassuring spatial environment for self-sufficient individuals with autism or Asperger, thinking ahead is of great importance ﾐ both for the autistic user and for the designer. An autistic person likes to know in advance what is going to happen and exactly how and when. This means that a clearly struc-tured schedule of daily actions, times and places is indispensible.The external aspect of the building already offers a dominant constructional rhythm, which I have taken as a directive for the design of the interior area. A double staircase in the reception hall, spiralling around a coloured nucleus, connects the three floors. This forms the heart of the building, and the physical guide to all the various functions that are at the disposal of the autistic user. This staircase provides a visual indication that the place has more than one level. If you follow a colour, you are safely guided tothe right place anywhere in the building. The explanation of the colours and their functions is positioned right at the entrance, so the autistic person can prepare the action and the route ﾐ and hence feel at ease, which makes the visit more effective.’

Voordenken en structuur

‘Bij het ontwerpen van een ruimtelijke omgeving voor mensen met autisme of het Syndroom van Asperger die streven naar zelfredzaamheid is voor-denken in plaats van na-denken van groot belang – zowel voor de ontwerper als voor de gebruiker. Van tevoren bedenken wat, hoe en waar precies je iets gaat doen is noodzakelijk.Daarnaast is structuur in het dagelijks leven on-misbaar.Het gebouw heeft een dominante uitwendigestructuur die ik aan de binnenzijde voelbaar wil Maken.Centraal staat een ‘dubbele trap’ rondom een gekleurde kern. Deze trap maakt het mogelijk al bij binnenkomst te ervaren dat het gebouw meer dan éen verdieping heeft. De kleurkeuze bepaalt op welke afdeling je uit-komt. Het volgen van de kleur in de trap geleidtde gebruiker consequent, ook op de verdie-pingen tot aan de diverse functies, en weer terug naar de uitgang. De verklaring van de kleuren en hun functies isdirect aan de ingang. Zo kan de autistische be-Zoeker de handeling en de route van tevorenvoorbereiden, waardoor deze meteen bij binnen-komst al wat gerust en op zijn/haar gemak is ge-steld - wat het bezoek meer effektief maakt.

The target group we have in mind has a normal to highintelligence - as can be seen in people with Asperger’sSyndrome.This place should offer these people anopportunity, in a way specificallly pleasing to them, torelax, to spend time, partake in hobbies and meet otherpeople. Besides that it offers this group spaces andfacilities for training and instructive courses on practicaltopics they have to deal with in the non-autisticenvironment, and to prepare for (a certain) autonomy intoday’s society. One can think of cooking instructions,learning how to behave in bars and restaurants, how toplay games for fun with other persons, i.e. instructions onsocial behaviour with neuro-typical (not autistic) people.

‘Spending unstructured time, besides school or work duties,can be difficult for people with autism. In this proposalpossible solutions in this field have been soughtt, oneswhich partly depend on spatial facilities.Developing a hobbyis something even non-autist (NT) people often needguidance and clubs-rooms with facilities. In doing so for thisparticular group, it apparently does not differ that muchfrom the’usual’ spatial solutions for f.i. artistic, creative ortechnical hobbies like drawing, painting, handicraft, puttingtogether robots or scale-models.The difference of approach though can be found in themeasures taken for preparing the persons on their doingsright at the entrance of the place: a curved wall leads thevisitor in fluent movements ,for not having to meet anysharp corners where one might hurt oneself in a clumsymoment, to the person at the reception desk.A display on this curved wall shows the sort of activitiesand the precise locations in the building where they takeplace.From that point the vertical access is clearly visible:the oval staircase which is connecting all the floors. On allother levels, this staircase is a beacon of orientation, to beseen from mostly all rooms. This position shouldminimalize any desorientation, and thus eventual panic.A space where an autist person can be her-/himselfrequires some adjustments to the regular.’

‘Ongestructureerde tijdsbesteding, buiten de school-of werkverplichtingen, kan voor mensen met autismeproblematisch zijn. In dit voorstel zijn hiervooroplossingen onderzocht, met name die waarbij deruimtelijke voorzieningen van belang zijn.Hobby’s zijn vaak materiaal- en gereedschaps-gebonden, en funktioneert pas optimaal als debetreffende (club-)ruimte goed is toegerust: dit geldtin het algemeen voor hobby’s, en niet slechts voorautisten.In die zin verschillen de ruimtelijke oplos-singen ook niet wezenlijk van dien voor niet-autis-ten. Het doel hier is het aanbieden van faciliteitenvoor creatieve of technische tijdsbesteding zoalstekenen, schilderen, knutselen, bouwen van robotsof maquettes. Het verschil met een ‘gewoon’vrijetijdscentrum zit in de voorbereiding op de teverwachten activiteit, die voor de autistischebezoeker al beneden bij de entree begint: langs devloeiende gebogen wanden - die voorkomen datmen zich bezeert bij onverhoopte onhandigebewegingen - word men naar de receptiebalie geleid.Op deze wanden hangen displays, waarop deverschillende aktiviteiten worden vermeld en waarprecies in het gebouw ze plaatsvinden. Vanaf dedisplays is het toegangstraject goed zichtbaar: eenruime ovale spiltrap van 3 verdiepingen. The sanitary facilities are however in the same place on every level.The roof terrace, an interior loggia, is anextremely safe and controllable area: no noise nuisance, fresh air without much distraction or direct danger, sun protection by greeneryand roof shades. ‘After an extensive inquiry to the needs ofrestingand relaxation of autist people, it became clear tome that Antonview had to become a centre inwhich the auditive, visual and tactile sensoryaspects should become the focus of my spatialapproach.Investigating the formal and visual aspects of thedesign, I have been inspired by the rigorouslystructured way of life and the need for evidentlogic that autist people tend to have. I was alsoimpressed by their detailed perception.It isimportant that all the offered ways of relaxation inthis plan can be done both individually as well ascollectively. Spatial separations have beenprovided by means of formations of natural greenor bymaterials with qualities of transparency, insuch a way that the coherent and safe characterremains clear and intact.The chosen materials reflect sobriety, and arebased on natural features.The choice of colors isbased on the seven colors of the rainbow-spectrum, as these have been proven to perform abeneficial effect on the health of the human body.’

‘Na een uitgebreid onderzoek naar de ont-spanningsbehoeften van autisten, moestvoor mij Antonzicht’ een belevingscentrumworden, waarbij horen, zien en voelen centraal staan. In mijn zoektocht naar de vormgeving hebik mij laten inspireren door de streng ge-structureerde leefwijze en de behoefte aan logica die autisten nastreven. Ook was ik onder de indruk van hun vermogen vantot gedetailleerde waarneming. Dit bood mij ruimte voor een wat vrijere vormentaal.Belangrijk voor mij was dat alle vormen van ontspanning naar behoefte zowel indi-vidueel als gemeenschappelijk moeten kunnen plaatsvinden. De ruimtelijke be-grenzing wordt gevormd door natuurlijke en transparante afscheidingen, die nodigzijn om het individuele karakter niet te ver-liezen en de samenhang juist te verster-ken. De keuze van sobere en natuurlijkematerialen heb ik gebaseerd op de eerlijke,vaak letterlijke benadering van autisten vanhun omgeving. Bij de kleurkeuzes ben ikuitgegaan van de zeven regenboogkleurenvanwege hun heilzame werking op het menselijk lichaam.’

‘Ik heb begrepen dat de interesses en behoeften van autisten niet wezen-lijk verschillen van de onze. Het is de rangschikking, de planning en dedetails die enorm belangrijk zijn. En als deze onderbroken worden ontaardteen ontspanning in een paniektoestand. Ook zijn er geen twee autistenhetzelfde. Wat de éen als aangenaam ervaart vindt de ander onprettig ofvies. Tref je een bepaalde voorziening, dan kan het zijn dat je daarmeeeen andere autist uitsluit. Belangrijk is het dus voor mij als ontwerper omzoveel mogelijk interesses te bereiken binnen éen ruimtelijke oplossing.’‘I have understood that the interests and needs of autistic people don’tbasically differ from our own. ‘Wat enorm belangrijk blijft, ongeacht welk inrichtingsplan je ook maakt, is de begelei-ding die gegeven wordt. Zonder goede (professionele) begeleiding verliest de autisthet overzicht. Zonder dat kan de mooiste inrichting voor hem/haar een crime worden,vooral wanneer hij/zij geen vast en herkenbaar orientatiepunt heeft. En zo kan er metgoede begeleiding en een betrokken ontwerp-team een fantas-tische ruimte voorvrijetijdsbesteding voor deze groep ontstaan.’

Without any support even thenicest design can become a horror for them, especially whenthey can’t find stable and recognisable visual guides in it. The gradual way

’An environment where autistic people canbe themselves requires some adaptations.The routing, the predictability and avoidingexcessive sensory stimuli are guidingfeatures for any design. So certainactivities have clearly been put together onone floorThe ground floor is for receptionand a meeting area for autistic and non-autistic people, (neurotypical) people. Thefirst floor is for organised leisure activities,with accommodation for f.i. cooking-lessons and sports. The next two levels aremeant for disorganised leisure. Eventualcontacts with others can take place here atthe bar and in the indoor garden, but thereis also room for retreat and seclusion in thecocoon space up top.’

‘Een ruimte waar je als autist jezelf kunt zijn vraagtom een aantal aanpassingen. Zo speelt de routing,de voorspelbaarheid en het voorkómen van eenteveel aan prikkels hierin een belangrijke rol.Om dit te bereiken heb ik de aktiviteiten herkenbaarsamengevoegd en gekoppeld aan de verschillendeetages. De begane grond is voor ontvangst ensamenkomen van autisten en niet-autisten (NT-ers).De eerste etage is voor de georganiseerde vrije tijd,met cursusruimten voor bv. kookles en sport.Daarboven zijn twee etages voor deongeorganiseerde vrije tijd. Vooral het kontaktleggen met anderen in bijvoorbeeld de bar ofbinnentuin kan hier plaatsvinden, maar ook is er demogelijkheid om je even helemaal terug te trekkenin de snoezelruimte bovenin.’

Different. Digital preferences

‘Technological interest, realities on screens,transforming images, data and sounds into anew virtual reality, digital information and thesafety zone of the ‘almost-real reality’ of virtualconstructions in cyberspace: this spatialproposal is largely based on these technologicalcomponents, in which autist people often canfind a ‘safer’ and a more reliable environmentthan the effective one.Some frequently used forms of digital activitiesare: sports, as being activated by simulationequipment, such as the ‘Wii’; a computer aschess opponent; the ‘Lanning’ game: the group-game on a game-computer.At the entrance there are clear indications onLCD screens, colour guides and webcamimages where which activity takes place andhow to get there.The expenses for acquiring the digital equipmentand the software are the major costs forrealising this design. A low-budget policy, whichincludes choices for cheaper furniture - whicheventually gets adapted ( for e.g. laptop use) -offers enough fair solutions for a good-functioning spatial design. This approachenables an optimal effectivity for its funds, withmodest interiors and updated digital ware.'

‘Vanuit de gedachtenwereld van een autistben ik tot een voorstel gekomen waarin tech-niek, beeld, geluid, informatica en digItale wer-kelijkheid een grote rol spelen - deze techno-logische middelen zijn voor iemand met autis-me vaak een veiliger en betrouwbaardere wer-kelijkheid dan de de echte. Sporten gebeurthier daarom uitsluitend naaraanleiding vansimulatieapparatuur zoals bv. ‘Wii’, er wordtgeschaakt tegen een schaakcomputer en menkan er ook gezelschapsspellen spelen op decomputer, het zogenaamde ‘Lannen’.In het gebouw worden d.m.v. LCD - infoscher-men, kleur-routes en webcams duidelijke aan-wijzingen gegeven waar er wat gebeurt en hoeer te komen.De kosten van dit ontwerp zitten voornamelijkin de aanschaf van de digitale apparatuur ende software. Er is gekozen voorgoedkoperemeubels (tuinstoelen aangepastvoor gebruikvan laptop) en zelfbouw kasten,zodat het be-schikbare budget vooral tengoede kan komen aan een degelijk digitaalaanbod voor de tijds-besteding van dezegebruikersgroep.’

The coloursof the panels are varied, so these can be chosen according to one’s preferences - see images thispage.’

When one is invited to design a day-care centre for autistic people, thereis some research to be done. How do these people think, act, what isimportant to them, what are their vulnerable features?But should thislead to different specific premisses for the design? Does such a centrehave to respond to different requirements than a local communitycentre? The assignment is a survey to find answers to this question.

The needs of autistic people for clarity and predictability is the centraltheme in this design. Inspired by the exterior of the building, the interiorgets a singular and comprehensible structure by introducing horizontaland vertical volumes.The general functions of staircase and toilets arepositioned in the vertical shafts, which are visible all through thebuilding. Like this one never has to look for the toilets. The more specificfunctions are positioned in the horizontal elements, which appear eitheras opened or closed architectural units: fitness, kitchen, computer units,game places.

The spaces and walls are to be finished with various materials. Theemphasis lies on texture and acoustics. Texture because autistic peopleoften compulsively strike and rub things with their hands, although theyhardly bear to be touched themselves due to hypersensitivity.Acoustics are also crucial for all those who are sensitive for sounds.

‘Wie een dagcentrum voor autisten magontwerpen zal zich moeten verdiepen in dezemensen. Hoe denken zij, hoe handelen zij, watbeweegt hen, wat zijn hun kwetsbareeigenschappen?Maar leidt dat ook tot specifiek andereontwerpuitgangspunten? Moet een dagcentrumvoor autistische jongeren aan andere eisenvoldoen dan het lokale buurthuis?Deze opgave is een zoektocht geworden naarantwoorden op deze vraag.’

‘De behoefte van autistische mensen aanduidelijkheid en voorspelbaarheid vormt deleiddraad in mijn ontwerp. Geïnspireerd opde buitenkant van het gebouw geef ik hetinterieur een heldere en eenduidige structuurdoor horizontale en verticale volumes toe tepassen. De algemene functies trap en wc’splaats ik in verticale kokers die je door hethele gebouw kunt zien. Zo hoef je nooit tezoeken naar een wc. De meer specifiekefuncties worden ondergebracht inverschillende horizontale volumes, hetzijopen of gesloten. Denk aan fitnessruimte,keuken, computerunits en gameplekken.

De volumes en wanden worden bekleed metverschillende materialen. Nadruk ligt optextuur en akoestiek. Ten eerste omdatautistische mensen, die vaak zelf geenaanraking verdragen, graag over dingenheen wrijven met hun handen. Ten tweede iseen goede akoestiek belangrijk voor mensendie gevoelig kunnen zijn voor geluid.’

De routing in het gebouw is zeer duidelijk. Bijbinnenkomst weet je gelijk waar je naar toemoet door gekleurde lijnen en teksten op degrond. Verdwalen is hier net zo moeilijk als opluchthaven Schiphol.The routes through the building are verydistinct. At the entrance there is immediateinformation using coloured strips and texts onthe ground indicating which way to go. It’s asdifficult to get lost her as it is at SchipholAirport.

De bezoekers zijn jonge mensen. Ik wil ze op een positievemanier prikkelen door ze een dynamische ruimte te bieden .Om deze te creëen heb ik op sommige plekken het mes in hetgebouw gezet. Zo zijn verticale zichtlijnen ontstaan ofwel hogeruimtes die uitermate geschikt zijn voor functies zoalstrampoline en stilte disco. Voor de gevoelige momentenvoorziet het plan in ruimtes waarin mensen zich kunnen terugtrekken.The visitors are young people. The aim is to challenge andstimulate them in a positive way by offering them a dynamicspatial setting. The original interior structure of the building hasat some places been modified and opened, in order to createvertical vistas or high interior spaces, appropriate for functionslike trampoline or silent disco. For the susceptible momentssmaller rooms are provided to withdraw.

‘ALL INTERIOR / WORLD IN ME’AN ASD-CHILDREN’S SUPPORT CENTRE

This pendant of ‘Antonview’ is the place for children. Since thiscentre should have a regional function, its has been positionedsuitably near the public transport network and the city – located50 metres away in Dommelstraat – so this place is also easy toreach and is close to ‘Antonview’.The opulently designed small villa, built in the early 20th century,displaying the festive excesses of the director’s taste andadjacent to the explicitly redesigned pop venue ‘The Effenaar’ isvery suggestive and inspiring for children.The easily recognisable house shape of the villa, and themultitude of protuberances and indentations can be an invitingscenery for fantasies. Children with autism often lackimagination. They will get a fragmented notion of the features ofthis building, but they can surely add them to their inner world ofcharacteristics.For their parents and their careers, on the other hand, this venueoffers a non-clinical environment for the support and consultancyconcerning their ASD child.High windows and balustrades, just like the four-sided facadedesign of the building, offer an atmosphere of security andconcentration – important for this very function.This design assignment hosts an interesting contradiction, whichlies in the dualism of creating the necessary clear structure andform in the interior whilst the characteristics of the exterior maynot be affected. The main goal of this proposal is still to benefitthe autistic child in this place, supporting them in how to orientatethemselves and not exposing them to too many sensory stimuli.

‘ALL INTERIOR / WORLD IN ME’CENTRUM VOOR KINDEREN MET ASS

Deze pendant van ‘Antonzicht’, nl. de plaats voor dekinderen, ligt 50 meter verderop in de Dommelstraat - alslokatie al even gemakkelijk te bereiken vanaf het station(regiofunktie). De zonder enige terughouding vormgegevenkleine villa uit het begin van de 20ste eeuw, met vrolijkeoverdaad aan direkteurs-decorum en uitkijkend op deEffenaar, is suggestief en inspirerend voor kinderen. Deherkenbare ‘huis’vorm en de veelheid aan uitsteeksels,inkepingen en ornamentiek geeft te fantaseren. Kinderen metautisme ontberen veelal het vermogen tot verbeelden. Zijzullen dan ook slechts zijdelings en fragmentarisch een besefkrijgen van de bijzondere opbouw van dit pand. Maar zezullen beslist deze karakteristieken kunnen toevoegen aandie van hun binnenwereld. Voor de ouders en dehulpverleners daarentegen biedt deze huisvesting van eenautismecentrum een niet-klinische omgeving voorondersteuning en raadpleging i.v.m. hun autistische kind.Hoge vensters en balustrades, evenals de rondom-bouw vande villa bieden binnen geborgenheid en concentratie, voordeze funktie belangrijk. Deze ontwerpopgave bergt eenuitdagende tegenstrijdigheid in zich, nl. tussen deveelvormigheid van het gegeven pand en een gewensteheldere struktuur en vormgeving van het interieur - waardooreen autistisch kind zich er kan orienteren en aan niet teveelprikkels blootstaat.

‘The prevailing scope to attain in this design, is to create a non-threateningplace for a child aged 4 to 12 in the autism spectrum in which they candevelop a positive relationship with a therapist in a safe and comfortingenvironment.The spaces offered here vary from open and spacious - youcan even see the blue sky through a skylight from downstairs in certainspot! - to enclosing and protective, in order to accommodate as manyexplicit (compulsive) preferences as reasonably possible.In addition thereare educational rooms for skill development. In separate spaces, there isroom for the parents and carers to get consultancy, or to work with theirchild with professional support. Also an info desk for general informationand spaces for courses and trainings are accommodated here - close tothe entrance, so there will be a minimum disturbance in the rest of thecentre.Since clearness and predictability of visual spatial information is crucial forautistic children to orientate themselves, I have created a central voidhigh up to the roof, around which all the other spaces are draped. Withmi-tone colours the various functions are indicated, to be understoodthrough the consequent use of it in the icon signing as well as in thefurnishing of the rooms themselves.One glance is enough to understandthe routing and positioning of all rooms - there is no possibility of gettinglost: the colours and the strategic openings in the partition walls preventmajor disorientation.There are spaces for more group-wise activities for developing socialinteraction, like a handicrafts and a game corner. These are situateddownstairs in the midst of the villa.The individual activities are locatedmore at the periphery, like the upstairs library and the computer room.The various niches, covered/upholstered with either smooth or furry-rugged materials, are always available to retreat, when an overload ofsensory stimuli threatens.’

‘Het voornaamste doel van het ontwerp voordit dagcentrum voor autistische kinderen van4 tot 12 jaar is dat ze daar zichzelf kunnen enmogen zijn. Het moet een plaats zijn waar zegeen bedreigingen ervaren, en een positieveband kunnen ontwikkelen met eenprofessionele begeleider in een veilige envertrouwen-wekkende omgeving. De hiergeboden ruimten zijn zowel open en ruim – jekunt zelfs de blauwe lucht zien door het dakheen vanaf beneden! – als ook beschermenden gebor-gen. Zo kan aan zoveel mogelijkbehoeften en (vaak dwangmatige) voorkeurentegemoet worden gekomen. De ruimtenbieden de kinderen de kans om bepaaldevaardigheden (sociale, motorische) teontwikkelen/trainen. Al deze ruimten liggencentraal in de villa en hebben een open enuitnodigend karakter.De ruimten voor advies en ondersteuning voorouders zijn afgescheiden hiervan. Hier kunnenouders ook onder professionele begeleidingmet hun kind werken. Er is ook eenbescheiden ruimte voor trainingen, en eeninfo-loket gekoppeld aan de centraleadministratie, om algemene informatie teverstrekken aan geïnteresseerden. Dit is vlakbij de entree gelegen, zodat dit in de rest vande ruimte niet hoeft te storen.’
