Acton Homeless Concern

The Brief

The Finished Artefact

Development

Acton Homeless Concern (AHC) is a charity in West London that helps any homeless person with free meals, clothes, legal advice and much more.

The project took approximately 3 months and many drafts and emails were exchanged to get it right.

I took influence from various editorial publications and put together a team of people to help steer the creative direction.

During the three months I sketched, took professional photos, made regular visits to their site and met homeless people to discuss their experience. This was key to the heart of the project.

The colour scheme came from the Irish flag which has been their colours since their conception. The front cover is an adaptation of their logo. The tube line running through the publication connects every element whilst grounding the brochure in London where AHC is based.

Layout ideas/ Typography

Here are a few variations on layout styles.

We want to incorporate large photos, (some from the collection you have & some we take ourselves) alongside pageswith text and illustrations. These double page spreads can be features and testimonials from users and supporters.

Early layout concept sent to AHC for a visual example.

It’s great to see how far the finished project came. Especially the ‘tube’ line in which I rounded the edges to look like the real tube map.

2019 marked 30 years of the service and they wanted to commemorate it with a new brochure.

It needed to be accessible to all as they would use it for a wide range of people, including school visits and board meetings with potential donors.

UWL Law Society

The Brief

Development

The Law Society at University of West London were rebranding for new students.

They run events for law & criminology including trips, talks and films.

I started by meeting with 3 of their representatives and taking notes on the stylistic elements they wanted to incorporate.

From there I made sketches taking influence from the Royal Courts of Justice as well as other law societies.

They needed a new logo to put on flyers, posters and social media.

They wanted the logo to look classy, sophisticated and professional, taking influence from other law societies and the official emblem of the courts.

It was clear that I needed a sophisticated typeface to sit alongside the emblem I was to create. For this I used Silver South Regular. The colour scheme also reflects this concept of sophistication by using a deep burgundy & gold.

In order to make sure they would utilise the logo and type properly I designed a small brand guideline document for them using InDesign.

This document outlines how each element can be used in different forms of media.

Silver South Regular - ALL CAPS

Never use gold letters on a white background, if printing in colour there should be a burgundy background.Otherwise, print in black

Exit West

The BriefFor this university project, I was tasked with creating a title sequence for book I have read.

This task was to develop skills in Adobe After Effects and to learn the techniques of keyframing and pre/ post production.

I chose the book ‘Exit West’ by Mohsin Ahmed.

It follows the journey of two lovers as their world is torn apart by war and they become refugees. The book is a sci-fi novel which explores concepts of borders and identity.

I began by making a ‘treatment’ which included descriptions of visual elements, a breakdown of the plot &

It could not be something which has already been adapted for TV or film and must be 30 seconds.

Developmentexamples of other work to take influence from.

After this I made a storyboard which broke down the title sequence into six 5 second shots.

From here I sketched the various design elements & used Adobe Illustrator to digitise what would be in the animation.

After moving all of the assets into After Effects I worked using various effects, transitions, expressions & keyframes.

I found a royalty free soundtrack to add to the animation and timed it to react with certain assets.

5 Sisters

The BriefFor this university project, I had to source my own client and design a website for them.

I first got in touch with the cafe via Facebook before organising a meeting with the owner.

During the meeting I took notes on their target audience, menu and how they want to use the website to promote the cafe side of their business.

I also took photos of the location, specific items from the menu and close up shots of Drury coffee, which they wanted to highlight on the site.

I found a local cafe called 5 sisters.

They are an established local gift shop with a target demographic of young mothers.

They wanted to make their website look minimal and sophisticated taking inspiration from tradition afternoon tea menus but with a modern twist.

DevelopmentI sketched out possible page layouts and tried to see whether I could gather everything on one page or split it over a few.

From there I downloaded Wordpress to host on my own site and worked with the ‘DIVI’ builder to make a minimal & accessible user interface.

I was in regular contact with the owner during this time to make sure the creative direction was heading the right way for their use.

The Final Artefact

Example of coding & personal site:

As well as the external client website I also took this time to work on my own site using HTML5 and CSS.

I worked with Adobe Dreamweaver and referred to the W3 schools directory for support & reference.

The Others

The BriefFor my major project in my final year of university I had to make my own brief and set my own challenge.

I began first with experiments & research.I attended a number of events such as Future Tech Now & VRLO.

I also visited Aardman animations, Igloo projections & went behind the scenes at Draw Me Close so I could learn about what goes into making VR.

I then experimented with my Gear 360 camera by going to visit refugees in

I created a virtual reality simulation which challenges Islamophobia. This can then be used as a form of viral advertising tied to anti-racist organisations.

The end of the simulation should point the user towards action and more information through the organisations websites.

DevelopmentCalais. I carried on with this experimentation in London using different technices of holding and moving the camera.

I created a storyboard with a narrative using real stories of Islamophobia from my friends & contacts.I recorded this using a Rode mic & zoom recorder before adding it to the final experience. For the experience I filmed footage and

stitched it together in After Effects.Once it was stitched I manipulated to footage by making it black & white before animating over the top with a bold red to draw the eye of the user.

I was able to upload the final piece to YouTube which supports 360 video and it can be watched with any headset or on a computer/ laptop.

VRLO: Draw Me Close: Aardman Animations:

Promotional poster made in Adobe Illustrator. This was printed on A1 paper and presented alongside a table with VR headsets to try the experience.

(below) A postcard made in Illustrator, InDesign & Photoshop which has a QR code leading to the YouTube video. It’s perforated through the middle so the user can keep the top part as a memento and send the other part to encourage others to action:

A new far-right street movement is attempting to take advantage of the political crisis by scapegoating migrants, refugees and the Muslim community.

A wave of Islamophobic hate crime is continuing to grow, with Muslim women at the sharp end. And there has been a major resurgence of antisemitism.

We ask for you to stand in solidarity with our movement, in support of multiculturalism and against racism.
