For example, I read in an old publication from the then NPOrgaan that they, together with the then well-known enthusiast and selector Mr. Rovers from Utrecht, went to Nokere in Belgium to purchase youngsters from the world-famous ‘Plastron’ of the legendary Gebr. de Baere. And it was immediate. A grandson of the ‘Plastron’ classified as Champion pigeon three years in a row with many first prizes. He was especially in his element with warm weather and wind at the head. Great successes were also achieved in the long distance with descendants of the national winners from Barcelona, St. Vincent and Pau from long distance matador Jan Niessink from Bleiswijk. For years the Gebr. Ruitenberg among the best players of the then Division D of the NABvP. with competition from numerous top lofts such as G.J. Wolff and Sons, Wezep – Jac. Cook and Sons, IJsselmuiden – Comb. Koele, Oldebroek – Gebr. Stouwdam, Oldebroek – Jac. Wolff, Wezep – Gebr. Bakker, Genemuiden and Gebr. Breman, Genemuiden. In the anniversary edition of 75 years NABvP I read that the Gebrs. Ruitenberg were General Champion of Division D in 1974.

Their friendship with Jac was special. Wolff from Wezep, one of the great champions of the Dutch pigeon sport. Descendants of his famous ‘410’, a pigeon from Gebr. Janssen origin, ensured great successes for

both brothers! An important pigeon at the time, as I remember, was also ‘De Baviaan’.

During their busy working lives, Anton and Frits Ruitenberg had a fruit and vegetable company, with which they attended weekly markets in the wider region. Until he was old, Anton went to the auction every week to buy fruit and vegetables. In years of great success, they had help from men such as Iete van Rijssen and Manne Kreder to take care of the pigeons.

When brother Frits withdrew from the pigeon sport in the early eighties, Anton continued alone. No longer with racing pigeons, but with breeding pigeons. The latter had always been of great interest to him. Only the best was good enough and great efforts were made for that. It is known, for example, that Anton obtained eggs directly from the Gebr. Janssen in Arendonk (B) in the last century more or less the Mecca of the racing pigeon sport. It was always the last eggs of the season,which were obtained from the Janssen brothers.

After a period of declining forces, on the evening of Thursday 20 May. Anton Ruitenberg from Zwolle passed away. Anton was a passionate and respected pigeon fancier his whole life. Together with his brother Frits he started the pigeon sport in 1953 and they raced together until the early eighties under the name Gebrs. Ruitenberg with pigeons. They have been very successful with their pigeons since the sixties of the last century. Even then their firm conviction was: purchasing pigeons from the best pigeons of the current great champions is the shortest way to success in the racing pigeon sport!

Many at home and abroad succeeded with descendants of these pigeons. Then it was the turn of pigeons from, among others, Gaby Vandenabeele (B), Gerard Koopman and Jan Hooymans. In his opinion, the chance of success was greatest with children of top pigeons and they came to Zwolle.

For example, from grandmaster Gaby Vandenabeele from Dentergem, who built up a friendship for many years, 10 children of the top pigeons ‘Bliksem’ and ‘James Bond’. ‘De 781’, son of ‘De Bliksem’ turned out to be a top breeder, who became world famous.

From Jan Hooymans came children of the world famous ‘Harry’. ‘De Jonge Harry’ became a stock bird in addition to ‘Dark Harry’ with Anton, with an enormous offspring. He took care of champion pigeons and first prize winners for several generations. ‘De Jonge Harry’ is a son of the world topper ‘Harry’, with 1st National Blois 37,728 p. – 1st National Chateauroux 22,340 p. and 3rd National Chateaudun 21.520 pigeons a phenomenal racer.

His breeding value is even better, as evidenced by the many top pigeons he has produced. ‘Harry’ is a son of ‘Jonge Bliksem’ Gaby Vandenabeele x ‘Dirkje’ from C. & G. Koopman, a daughter of ‘Kleine Dirk’ x ‘Amoré’. ‘De Jonge Harry’ has as mother ‘Ellen’ a direct from

Another quality injection was found at Gerard Koopman in Ermerveen in Drenthe. Children of ‘Kleine Dirk’, Children of the famous “Kleine Dirk” came to Zwolle. The story goes that one of the purchased pigeons did not fertilize and that Anton came to Gerard with the pigeon to exchange it. Gerard did not have any youngsters from ‘Kleine Dirk’ at that time, but Anton did not want to return to Zwolle without a son of ‘Kleine Dirk’. After much insistence, Gerard gave in and Anton was given the NL 03-5343048, a son of ‘Kleine Dirk’, who had already shown himself well in Gerard’s racing loft. Anton gave him the name ‘Wondere Dirk’ and his breeding value turned out to be unbeatable! It was also a special pigeon in the loft. When he saw a stranger, he immediately ran away. Anton, however, can do anything with the “Wondere Dirk”. He came out of ‘Kleine Dirk’ x ‘Amira’ from Van Hove Uytterhoeven.

‘De Wondere Dirk’ is probably the best-producing son that ‘Kleine Dirk’ has ever produced. IMPORTANT CHOICEA good moment in the development of Anton’s breeding loft was his decision to stop the live auctions and start auctioning via the internet via GPS-Auctions. From that moment on, the interest in his pigeons increased. All over the world his pigeons performed enormously and so his pigeons were also greatly appreciated. At the insistence of his friend Gerrit Bergman, Anton himself took part in the Grand Prix Balaton one loft race in 2015. One of his pigeons won the final race and they also occupy the first three places in the Ace pigeons! A proof of the great quality of his pigeons!
