Cherran College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore in association with Antiviral Research Society
organized National seminar on ““RREECCEENNTT AADDVVAANNCCEESS IINN AANNTTIIVVIIRRAALL DDRRUUGG DDEESSIIGGNN,,
DDIISSCCOOVVEERRYY && DDEEVVEELLOOPPMMEENNTT” on June 8-9, 2018. The Seminar was inaugurated by
Dr. C. Manoharan, Director, N. G Hospital Coimbatore. Mr. R. Raghu Vice President
Schrödinger Inc Bangalore gave his Chief guest address and Dr. C. Manoharan,, delivered
the Presidential address and and Dr. Ashish Wadhwani, Secretary brief about the
activity of Society, more than 20 leading speakers delivered lecture on various aspect of
antiviral drug discovery and development in five technical sessions. In inauguration
function special awards given in various category, Life time achievements award to Dr. M.
Vishvanathan, Bharathidasan University, Trichy Outstanding research scientist award
for Dr. S. Mahalingam, IIT-M, Chennai., and Four Fellowships awarded to Dr. K.
Palanichelvam, Dr. N. Mathivanan, Dr. K.Ilango and Dr. J. Sridhar based on the
outstanding contribution in various field of antiviral research. Technical sessions on
virology, Drug discovery, vaccine, Drug design from natural source and Bioinformatic and
Nanotechnology organized in this seminar. Poster presentations were also organized for the
students and research scholars in the area of drug design and development, A total of 70
posters were presented and top ten posters were selected for awards. Dr. K. Ilango,
SRMIST, Chennai and Dr. M. Suresh Kumar, Pondicherry invited as Chief guest for
valedictory function, delivered the valedictory address and gave ten best poster awards to
winners in valedictory function Dr. P. Selvam, organizing secretary, proposed the vote of
thanks. More than 150 people were actively participated, and 50 members from all over the
India participated and benefited from the Seminar.

First session (27.12.2016) started with informative and interactive talks with Keynote
address and three invited lectures. Dr. N. Mathivanan, Biocontrol and Microbial
Metabolite Lab, Center for Advanced Studies in Botany, University of Madras, Guindy
Campus, Chennai - 600 025, India delivered lecture on Prospects of medicinal plants for
human wellness. Dr. M. Elanchezhiyan, Professor and Head, Dept of Microbiology,
University of Madras delivered lecture on “Polarization of Immunity During HSV
Latency”, Dr. S. Mahalingam, Professor, Department of Biotechnology, IIT-M, Chennai,
gave insight on “HIV/SIV Pathogenesis: Cross-talk between hNup 153 and SIV Vpx”.
Dr. M.B. Viswanathan. Professor, Department of Botany, Bharathidasan University,
Tiruchirappalli 620 024, enlightened audience with lecture on “Plant Taxonomy to Plant
Ribosome Inactivating Protein – A Decisive Research”. Scientific session on “Drug design
and development” were organized in this seminar. Dr U.P. Senthil Kumar., Senior Vice
President, R & D centre, Orchid Pharma Ltd, Chennai, Chaired the session and delivered
keynote address on “Antibiotic New Drug Discovery”. Four lead speakers gave
informative lectures on various aspects of HIV drug design and development. Mr R.
Raghu, Vice President, Schrodinger, Bangalore delivered lecture on “Computational
Drug design in selective inhibitor design for potential cancer targets", Dr. K.
Palanichelvam, Department of Biotechnology, School of Bio and Chemical Engineering,
Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, Krishnankoil, Tamil Nadu., gave
lecture on “Vaccine Production in Plants with Agrobacterium and Plant viruses”, Dr.
Ashish Wadhwani, Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, JSS Academy of Higher
Education & Research, Mysuru, College of Pharmacy, Ooty – 643001, Rockland’s Tamil
Nadu, made presentation on “Inhibitory effect of Antiviral Drug Acyclovir on Breast
Cancer Cells MCF-7 & MDA-MB- 231 - A Drug Repurposing Approach”, Prof. Dr. G.

Arunachalam., M. Pharm., Ph.D., FIC., Principal and Professor, PGP College of
Pharmaceutical Science and Research Institute Namakkal - 637207,Tamilnadu, highlighted
the on “Bioactive Natural Products and their Analysis”. Dr. S. Babuji, Professor,
Cherran’s College of Pharmacy, highlighted the “Prodrug Design and Development”
Poster presentations and oral Presentations were also organized by the organising
committee on 8.6.2018 where in participants from different colleges, universities and
institutions all over the India had participated. Around 30 posters were presented and six
posters were selected for the best poster awards and invited to present for shotgun oral
presentation on 9.6.2018. Cash award with certificates were given to the award winners in
valedictory function.
Second day scientific sessions (28.12.2016): Dr. Valliappan Kannapan, Professor of Quality
Assurance (Retd.), Annamalai University, delivered Key note address on “Chirality @
work in drug research and therapy”. Special Scientific session on “Bioinformatic in drug
discovery”. Dr. J. Sridhar, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology (DDE),
Madurai Kamaraj University Madurai-625021 and delivered the keynote address on
“Computational protein design and protein-ligand interaction studies for the improvement
of organophosphorus degrading potential of Deinococcus radiodurans” Dr. M. Suresh
Kumar, Centre for Bioinformatics, Pondicherry University, Pondicherry highlighted the
Structural And Inhibitory Perspective Of Dengue NS2B-NS3 Protein
Dr. K. Ilango, Dean, Interdisciplinary Institute of Indian System of Medicine
(IIISM), S.R.M. University, delivered talk on “Drug Discovery and Development from
Natural Products”,

of Pharmacy emphasized on “HIV IN/LEDGF Inhibitors are validated therapeutic Target
for treatment of HIV/AIDS”
