Antisocial Personality Disorder: Assessment, Consequences, and Intervention Strategies Presenter: Nancee Blum, MSW, LISW Training Description Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) has been described as "A pattern of recurrent antisocial, delinquent or criminal behavior that starts in childhood, or early adolescence, and is manifested by disturbances in many areas of life: family relations, schooling, work, military service, and marriage". Although many people's lives (and society as a whole) have been impacted by those who show signs of ASPD, few realize that a lifelong pattern of bad behavior is considered a mental disorder and may be even more puzzled by why it is classified as such; yet ASPD is second only to depression in prevalence among mental disorders, and these numbers do not include those in prisons or other institutions, a large number of whom would meet criteria for ASPD. The disorder carries a staggering cost to society and to the victims of crime, abuse, and violence wreaked by individuals with ASPD. This workshop is designed to help those in the helping professions and in correctional settings gain a wider understanding of the disorder and general management strategies that show the potential to help at least some individuals with ASPD. Training Objectives 1. Describe the evolution of the diagnosis of ASPD and descriptive terms (sociopathy, psychopathy) 2. Understand theoretical models associated with ASPD 3. Learn about risk factors for ASPD 4. Explore the social impact of ASPD 5. Learn about key research findings associated with ASPD 6. Discuss management strategies for ASPD 7. Describe potentially helpful treatments for adults with ASPD 8. Describe a treatment for aggressive juveniles in a Connecticut correctional setting Location: Holiday Inn St. Paul I-94-East (3M Area) 2201 Burns Ave. St. Paul, MN 55119 Cost: $85.00 (Individual Rate) Registration: (Use form on reverse side of this flyer) Additional Info: Jerrod Brown 651-734-5517 / email: [email protected] Continuing Education Approval - Application for continuing education credits will be made with the following boards: The Minnesota Board of Social Work The Minnesota Board of Psychology The Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health The Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy The Minnesota Post Board The Minnesota Board of Continuing Legal Education The Minnesota ADR Board The Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators Presenter Biography Nancee Blum is currently a clinical faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and a Fellow of the American Psychotherapy Association. She currently serves as a consultant and provides training to the Iowa Department of Corrections to implement the STEPPS program in the Iowa prisons and community corrections. Although the STEPPS program was developed for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), positive outcomes have been reported in offenders who have traits of Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) in addition to meeting criteria for BPD. Ms. Blum was a medical editor and writer for many years prior to receiving her MSW. She is co-author of the Structured Interview for DSM-IV Personality (with Bruce Pfohl and Mark Zimmerman, American Psychiatric Press), and STEPPS Group Treatment Program for Borderline Personality Disorder (with Norm Bartels, Don St. John, and Bruce Pfohl), as well as author or co-author of numerous journal articles and book chapters.
