By Robert And Donna Seecof (Note: The following is excerpted from “Bookends: Objects of Art & Fashion” by Robert Seecof, PhD, MD, and Donna Seecof, MSN, pub- lished by Schiffer.) Historically, bookends were always meant to be decorative. They were commercial products and always responded to the prevalent styles in order to sell. Today we find bookends that were designed in the popular fashions of their times - Arts & Crafts style or in Art Deco style for example, and changes in bookend styles reflect the major changes in decorative art fashions that took place in the United States, decade by decade in the twentieth century. Art styles permeated society in America to varying degrees. American people lived with Victorian ideals and styles for generations and adopted them unthinkingly. The Art Nouveau style reached into all forms of art and design, including common- place personal belongings, and became a chosen way of life in England and Europe, with per- haps a smaller following in America. Art Deco fashions and lifestyle dominated American sensibilities and preferred lifestyle in the 1920s and 1930s. The 1940s fashions took a back seat to World War II in the United States. The 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, which we now call mid- century modern style, prevailed in commercial fashions. After the 1970s, styling seemed to fragment and no single decorative style dominated, but Arts & Crafts styling survived through the entire century. Thus, fashion dictated bookend styles and, today, vintage bookends document the fashion styles of past times. Bookends did not represent all of the high art styles of the 19th and 20th centuries, but they did reflect the major decorative styles. Furthermore, nearly all bookends, old or new, are sculptures, and all were created by artists. Bookends are a medium of decorative art and we appreciate them as artwork to the present day. Bookends may be identified as to art style by a typical design, as, for example, streamlining typifies American modern in Art Deco, or the identification may depend on subject material that was character- istic; like, for example, oak leaves and acorns for the Arts & Crafts era. Not only do old bookends reflect bygone art styles, but many bookends document historical events as well. Some pairs com- memorate individuals and histori- cal events by directly illustrating them. For example, a bookend showing Charles Lindbergh’s air- plane - The Spirit of St. Louis - or his portrait - commemorate his his- toric transatlantic flight. Other bookends establish a timeline by changes in their composition. For example, lead was used only until about 1915, and pressed woody material and chalk were used dur- ing World War II, when metal was diverted to the war effort. Decorative bookends also served as advertising leaders and tokens of fraternal societies. Today there are thousands of different pairs of bookends avail- able, but as recently as the nine- teenth century there were very few. There needed to be an evolu- tion of books before there could be an evolution of bookends. The printing press was invented in the fifteenth century and gave rise to books as we know them today, and we can guess there were bookends, but no bookends have been found from these early times. Finally, in the early part of the nine- teenth century, book- ends appeared, probably in Eng-land, in the form we now call a bookrack - a pair of bookends connected at their bases by a single short shelf. Books rested on the shelf, and the book- ends prevented them from falling side- ways. The shelf was made of wood or of metal tubes and fre- quently fashioned from several pieces nested together so that the length was adjustable. These adjustable bookracks are called bookslides or adjustable bookracks. The end pieces were frequent- ly hinged a n d could be folded down against the shelf. Bookracks and book- slides remained popular in England during the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth cen- turies, and we can still find them today. Toward the middle of the nineteenth century, compul- sory elementary educa- tion appeared in America, first in Massachusetts and then around the country. Not only did books become plentiful, but common people were enabled to read them. Books became more desirable symbols of culture in American homes, and bookends were produced to support and embellish the new home libraries. Large numbers of bookends were produced in the United States in the twentieth century because com- pulsory edu- cation generat- ed a literate population who want- ed to own and display books. Comparatively few bookends were produced in England and Europe, probably because of lesser demand, and the bookends that were pro- duced were generally high-end items. Because the overwhelming majority of bookends were pro- duced in the United States, book- ends can be considered an American art form. By 1916, the Sears catalog was already offering pairs of free-stand- ing bookends and we know that such bookends were available else- where. This cata- log illustrated bookends with wooden bases and uprights and with orna- mental brass owls positioned on the bases. The early free-standing bookends were called “book rocks.” The earliest American bookends we have seen with documented dates were marked 1892 and the next earliest were 1903, so earlier ones must have been very rare. By the 1920s, there was a flood of American bookends in great variety, and bookends have been manufactured ever since, although bookend production dropped noticeably in about 1930, apparently because of the Great Depression. Many foundries closed dur- ing the Depression and iron bookends were infre- quently pro- duced after- wards. Bookend production declined again during World War II and once again after 1950, when television appeared and presumably cut into the num- ber of readers. Book-ends have been manu- factured from a large number of different materials. Metals have been most popular because they are heavy, readily cast, take a variety of finishes, and are durable. Price is determined by all the considerations that usually apply to antiques and collectibles, such as age, decorative quality, condi- tion, artist, size, art style, foundry, materials of manufac- ture and, of course, supply and demand. Single bookends usually sell for less than half the price for a pair. Bookend prices have been rising, on aver- age, for the past sev- eral years. A pair of iron butterflies by the French artist Edgar Brandt sold for $24,000 at a Christie’s auc- tion in 2004, prob- ably a world record high price for bookends, but prices in the thou- sands are not unusual today. May 7, 1931 - January 23, 2013A master restorer of

After conducting a similarsurvey last year, the AshefordInstitute of Antiques (a dis-

tance learning program onantiques and appraising basedin Florida), has released itslatest trending data on theantiques marketplace for2013. The survey, which isaimed at compiling the pur-chase trends of customersbuying antiques over a twelvemonth period, was broughtback this year after an over-whelming response on theschool’s website from readersrequesting more information, said Charles Green, Directorof the Institute. Green wenton to say that he was struck

by how the results seemed toresonate with readers, andthat pollsters at the Institutedecided to run the surveyagain, with a few tweaks(including doubling the num-ber of participants to over athousand), to see if there wasany measurable change fromthe previous year. “It justseemed to make sense, sinceso many of our students and

those visiting our website, were requesting it,” saidGreen.

We expecttop collectors will come afterthis piece with everything

they have.”What may well be the

Treasured Edition Should Bring $500,000+ In February 21-22 AuctionA CGC-graded 6.5 copy

of Detective Comics #27(DC, 1939), the first appear-ance of “The Bat-Man,” isexpected to bring more than$500,000 when it comesacross the auction block at theFletcher-Sinclair Mansion(Ukrainian Institute ofAmerica) in New York Cityon February 21-22 as the cen-terpiece of HeritageAuctions’ Vintage Comics &Comic Art Signature®Auction.

“If you’ve followed thesales in recent years of thisprime pop culture collectible, then you know that the issueis currently the second mostvaluable comic in the hobby,”said Ed Jaster, Senior VicePresident of HeritageAuctions, “behind onlySuperman’s debut in ActionComics #1. This comic hasheld down the number onespot before and it’s certainlypossible that it could returnthere. Batman is a strongercharacter than Superman in

the minds of many a fan rightnow, and has certainly been abigger box-office hit in recentyears. “Heritage famouslysold a CGC 8.0 graded copyof Detective Comics #27 for$1,075,500 in February of2010 and, last year, sold theBilly Wright pedigree copy(also graded 6.5) for$522,000.

“This particular copy isnotable for the near-completeabsence of smudging or stain-ing on the front cover,” addedSteve Borock, ConsignmentDirector at HeritageAuctions. “Of course, thecover image by Bob Kane isone of the most famous in thehistory of comics.”

Record Prices At Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates January Glass SaleMt. Washington

Lava, originally knownas Sicilian Glass, provedto be the most desirableware at Jeffrey S. Evans& Associates’ January26 Winter glass auction, with stellar prices real-ized for several differentobjects made in thismanner. The sale tookplace at the firm’s Mt.Crawford, Virginiagallery. A bulbous-basevase done in shiny rasp-berry with multi-coloredinclusions and gilt trim, circa 1878-1880 real-ized the highest price ofthe day, $5,463. [Lot450]

Other Mt. Washing-ton Lava ware that did

well was executed in dramat-ic dark backgrounds, theideal showcase for the shim-mering inclusions. A blackbulbous vase with waistedneck and a flared-form vasewith waisted neck each soldfor $2,760, while an urn-formvase with applied handlessold for $2,300. These, too, were executed circa 1880.[Lot 454, 456 and 451,respectively]

Two items made at the

Imperial Glass Company ofOhio also realized highprices. A Free Hand line iri-descent colorless compote, with opal hanging hearts andcobalt blue rim and tall stem, previously unlisted in the lit-erature on the factory, soldfor a record price of $3,738,the second-highest price ofthe auction. Executed circa1925 and standing nearly 10inches high, the compotewent for almost four times

the estimated selling price, because it was a terrificexample, never before illus-trated, and in wonderful con-dition [Lot 476]. A Free Hand8-inch-tall vase from thesame factory and period, withunusual low handles, knownas shape FH10, sold for$2,300, also way over esti-mate. The deep marigold andapplied blue-green vase wasunusual and very attractive to

Lot 450, sold for $5,463 againstthe $2,000 to $3,000 estimate.Mt. Washingtonintroduced its Sicilian glasswhich was made using lava orvolcanic slag. It appears thatthey discontinued the line in1880. Frederick Shirley wasgranted three patents for theproduction and design of thisglass, which today is consideredto be the first and most innova-tive art glass produced in America. Shirley went on to formulate andpatent Burmese glass in 1885, and develop Mt. Washington’s famousPeach Blow, Rose Amber, and Royal Flemish art glass lines.

many collectors. [Lot 514]A covered sugar bowl

produced by the IndianaTumbler and Goblet Co., aGreentown number 450, inthe Holly Amber pattern andgolden agate color, madecirca 1903, 6-5/8” high, soldfor $3,335. The rarity of thisbowl and cover in this color-way and pattern lead to fren-zied bidding, with the finalprice nearly ten times theestimate. [Lot 50]

Lastly among the top-selling lots, a figural glassSanta Claus miniature lampby the Consolidated Lamp &Glass Company, dating to thelate 19th century, sold for$2,100 due to its desirability.[Lot 334] Additional strongresults were realized for col-lections of toothpick holders,

tumblers, cruets, Finlay Onyxand Floridine, as well asSteuben.

The above lots were allfrom the collection of the lateRichard “Dick” and MaryAnn Krauss of Clyde, Ohio. Also featured in the auctionwere collections from NewYork, Pennsylvania andMaryland.

After the sale, Jeffrey S.Evans said, “I am extremelypleased with the auctionresults. We received our high-est number of absentee bidsfor a glass sale in the past 5years. This auction demon-strates that collectors are rec-ognizing good values in themarket and are re-enteringthe arena. The Krauss collec-tion of Imperial art glass wasunprecedented at public auc-tion and drew tremendousinterest and strong results. Itwas a great pleasure cata-

loging the collection – it gaveme a crash course on thecompany’s short-lived andfinancially unsuccessfulforay into the art glassworld.”

Overall, the sale realized$265,972, with one lot with-drawn due to a conditionissue (lot 500). The galleryreceived over 3,300 pre-auc-tion absentee bids and morethan 2,300 live Internet bidson auction day from potentialbuyers located in 15 differentcountries. In addition to thosebids, Evans and his top-notchstaff orchestrated over 200phone bids along with stiffcompetition from a seriousgroup of in-house bidders. Inall Evans sold 1,050 lots in 9-1/2 hours for an averageof 110 lots sold per hour. The complete catalogue withprices realized can be accessed at jeffreys

Director, Tony Drew echoedthe sentiment and stated thatthe primary focus of thisyear’s survey was to againgauge interest in currenttrends of antiques and col-lectibles, based on sales andrequests for particular items. He stressed that while nostringent scientific formulaswere employed, and the sur-vey was informal in nature, the results were still quiteinteresting when viewed intheir entirety. “What we’reseeing is still a basic reflec-tion of last year’s poll…” saidDrew, “but on an even moremagnified level - youngerbuyers are definitely becom-ing the norm, and there seemsno doubt that all the televi-sion shows out there aboutantiques and collectibles arehaving some influence on thisdemographic.” Drew went onto say that some areas of “col-lecting” had moved up ordown a notch in the survey, but that one noticeable trend

was the move towards small-er collectibles from the 1950sand even 1960s. “Again…”said Drew, “it’s the youngerbuyers leading the way.”

If you’d like to see the fullresults from the survey con-ducted by the AshefordInstitute, you can visit theirPoll/Survey page atwww.asheford.com/2013-survey-results.html or on theschool’s website atwww.asheford.com for acomplete listing of surveyedtrends for 2013.
