Running Board Reflections

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Jay Ofsthun Memorial Car Show, a collaboration between Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska and Midnight Sun Street Rod Association (MSSRA.)

As a somewhat newer member of AAMA, I decided to do some research to better understand who Jay Ofsthun was and why Alaska’s largest car show honors his name. With a little digging, I came across a newsletter published by MSSRA in 1995. It included a nice tribute to Jay, written by his friend, car enthusiast and car show co-founder, Ed Park. (By the way, the Mr. Ed’s Pick Award is handed out each year by MSSRA in Ed’s honor.)

While researching Jay’s life, I learned that he owned a 1928 Dodge Brother’s Coupe as part of his collection. He was a past president of AAMA. He loved cars of all makes, models and vintage. Very sadly, Jay and his family died in a plane crash while on a fishing trip at Lake Clark in 1986.

Here, in Ed Park’s words, is a little more about Jay Ofsthun:

––––––––––“Jay and I came to Anchorage

with the same Federal employer at approximately the same time, in the fall of 1973, from Southern California (Jay had been in Alaska prior to this time with the military.) Jay left our mutual employer in the

fall of 1974 to work for the CPA firm that he became a partner of. During this time, we remained good friends and combined our efforts on the car scene, Jay with antiques and myself with street rods.”

“I can still remember the lunch Jay and I had in December 1978 when he told me about his dream of having a car show on The Park Strip. Jay’s idea was to have a day where everyone with a specialty car in any condition could come and have a good time, talking to owners of other types of cars. It would be a time when bias of make and model and type didn’t matter, and just the love of the automobile could be shared with the owners and spectators alike. He thought there should be some awards but in a fun way only, that is why no judging is done.”“I told Jay I thought his idea was great, ‘so let’s do it!’ I organized it and we put the first one on in 1979. We put the first Show & Shine on in the name of Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska and Midnight Sun Street Rod Association.”

––––––––––Ed Parks has also passed along

since writing about his friend Jay Ofsthun. But their mutual passion for cars and community lives on and continues to inspire new generations of enthusiasts.

Hello! I am an Anchorage resident looking to rent a classic car for a party, but just for the car to be present, not to drive it.

My husband is Cuban and it is a Cuba-themed cookout. We are just looking for someone with a 1950’s American classic car in good condition who would be willing to drive it to our place and leave it parked for a few hours. It would only be a party decoration for guests to take photos in front of and to help the event feel more Cuban.

We would be willing to pay for the

Party Request

service, of course, but we are having trouble finding something and are not sure if this would be something interesting for your members. We are looking at the date of Saturday, August 10th. Thank you very much in advance.

by Dennis AllenThose without Hope, this year

better plan on joining us in 2020! Best I can figure out this was AAMA’s 28th (1991) year in Hope and it was the 32nd (1987) year for the Wagon Trail Run. Dennis and Diane managed to arrive ahead of Dick, Barb, Kim, & Brett Henningsen on Thursday – by minutes! Grandson David who has been coming to Hope since he was 4 or 5 is now in the Army so he couldn’t be here. By Saturday Howard & Debbie Hansen, Sara Stoops, Gwyn Wiedmer, and Tom & Marcy Cresap with their New York family, Granddaughters Hannah & Sophie and parents Anton & Chrissie, had arrived. On Sunday Scott Hulse, Tam & Art Isham, and Nat Gardner came to share the day.

After we arrived, we found out there was no gasoline available in Hope – seems the Davidsons have

Are You Without Hope?

sold both the gas station and liquor store business to Creekbend and they have not opened either one for business yet. We got the word out that the nearest gas was Girdwood or Seward.

On Saturday we ate pancakes at the Social Hall in “downtown” Hope followed by parades. Many of our members went to the Hope/Sunrise Museum for a lecture on Dodge

Power wagons. Our Saturday afternoon hamburgers & Hotdogs were prepared by master chefs Tom & Dennis. We walked our evening meal off with a walking “History Tour” of the area around 1st, 2nd, B, and C Streets where we saw cabins built in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Afterwards we enjoyed several games of Rummikub. Our champion, David, was in Basic Training at Fort Benning so the rest us of took turns winning.

On Sunday Dennis cooked pancakes, Marcy cooked her Chili Egg Puff dish, and others brought fruits and donuts for a royal breakfast feast. At 11:00 am Howard, Debbie, Sara, and Dennis walked the 5K Wagon Trail race. Howard made AAMA proud with a 2nd place finish in his age group. As for the rest of the four let’s just say they finished! After the awards and raffle drawing, we returned to the Retreat to consume more food!

We had a good showing of cars by Sunday: ‘34 Ford Fordor; ’68 Volvo; ’58 Chevy; ’25 Ford T; ’56 TBird; ’58 Rolls; ’56 Ford Crown Vic; ’62 VW; and ’56 Ford PU. ☯

Dennis Allen’s 1934 Argentinian, right-hand drive Ford is parked in front of his son, Tony’s, historic cabin in Hope during the Hope weekend. John “Moosemeat” Hedburg built the place in about 1900-1902. John was a Swedish miner who supplied moose meat to other miners. Hence the name. Tony is in the process of restoring the cabin.

While the weather was wet, we were able to park in a covered parking area, so that was nice!

Nat took the 2nd Place Vintage award, and I got the 3rd Place Vintage award. First place went to a Model A Hot Rod. For a rather rainy day, the show was a great place to chat and meet new people. ☯

Our last Adopt-A-Road cleanup for this summer will take place on Saturday, September 7 at 9:00 AM. We will meet at the Carr’s parking lot at the corner of Northern Lights and Muldoon. Sara Stoops will prepare a tailgate continental breakfast for our early-morning enjoyment before we venture off to pick up trash.

Marcy Cresap has arranged for Creg Carpenter to give us a tour of the William Jack Herhandez Sport Fishing Hatchery at 941 N. Reeve Blvd after the cleanup.

Join us for this fun and informational adventure. You do not have to participate in the cleanup. If you wish, you may join us when we caravan from the parking lot to the hatchery at about 11:30 AM. ☯

The Last Adopt-A RoadFor 2019

Robert Theodore (Ted) Kimzey, 80, passed away peacefully, in his sleep at his home in Anchorage, Alaska on July 24, 2019 after a yearlong battle with leukemia.

He was born in Boise, Idaho on March 23, 1939. His family moved to Alaska in 1947. They built a log cabin on Lois Drive. Ted often recalled trapping rabbits near Fireweed Lane when he was in the 3rd grade.

He studied Civil Engineering at Boise Jr. College and began working construction back in Alaska with his father. He was a member of the Operating Engineers 302.

In 1962 he married the girl next door in Star, Idaho, and they headed back to Alaska, where they often stated they were still on their honeymoon.

After the 1964 Earthquake, he worked in Seldovia replacing the old wooden stave water system.

In 1965, His young family settled permanently in Anchorage, where he worked first for The Overhead Door Company, then for the Anchorage Borough. He started in the Landfill, but made his career in the Municipality Road Maintenance Department.

He and Colleen were involved in the Antique Auto Mushers of Alaska. They owned a 1922 Model T, ’31 Model A, a 1962 International Pickup, and others along the way.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for many years, where he was on the Evangelism team and a member of the Property and Management Committee. They transferred to Anchorage Lutheran, where he was a member until the time of his death.

Ted was an avid outdoorsman who

enjoyed hunting, fishing and building. His favorite toys were his chain saw and saw mill.

He enjoyed traveling for the joy of the journey. Always willing to talk to new people, he never met a stranger. He once led a group of young people on a sled dog expedition that was the precursor to the Jr. Iditarod.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert H Kimzey and Carrie J Nelson. He is survived by his wife, E. Colleen Gordy, children Robin Jessee, Bill Kimzey, and Christine Cavalero, grandchildren and great grandchildren, sister Olive Chenowith, great aunts Esther Best and Nina Irwin, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, you may plant a tree to commemorate all the ones he cut down.

He and Colleen were married for 58 adventurous years. She made a career of saving him from physical harm. He was able to face life without fear, knowing his wife had his back. In the end he was able to face death knowing he would meet his true

savior, Jesus Christ.Memorial Services took place at

the Anchorage Lutheran Church, 1420 N St. at 2:00 Saturday, August 3rd. ☯

Longtime Alaska resident, Judith Ann Morfield, 79, passed away surrounded by her family on June 14, 2019, as a result of complications following open-heart surgery at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska.

Judy was born on July 30, 1939 to Herman and Gladys Shelton in Pomeroy, Washington. She grew up and went through school in Pomeroy. She married Donald Morfield on

August 19, 1961. They moved to Alaska in 1963 and were residents of Valdez during the 1964 Earthquake. They relocated to other locations in Alaska and finally to Anchorage in 1981.

Judy was preceded I death by her parents, Herman and Gladys Shelton and a brother, Kenny Shelton.

She is survived by a brother, Phillip Shelton, niece, Kay Barga, her best friend and husband, Donald (who is an AAMA member) and the three children: Connie Norman, Duane and Darin Morfield. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Amanda, Matt, Mark, Sara, Zachary Norman and Ann Marie Morfield and three great-grandchildren: Caitlin, Carter and Wyatt Norman.

In accordance with Judy’s wishes, a private service will be held at s future date. ☯

Judith Ann MorfieldJuly 30, 1939-June 14, 2019

This month has presented a very full schedule that began with the Independence Day parades in Anchorage, Chugiak and Willow.

Other highlights were the Bear Paw car show and parade, Hope Weekend, Valley Trash car show and, finally, the Jay Ofsthun Show and Shine.

Our president, David Jensen, offers up an excellent history of the annual Jay Ofsthun show, which traditionally happens the first Sunday of August on the west end of the park strip in Anchorage. This year’s show featured about 400 vehicles of every imaginable sort from antiques to hot rods to new ones, including Teslas.

On Saturday, the day before the show, we attended the memorial service in honor of long-time AAMA member, Ted Kimzey. It is difficult to believe that Ted, whom I met in 1987 and have known as a friend ever since, is gone. With his folksy ways and wisdom, it just seemed that he would last forever–or at least, he would surely outlast me. That, even though he was a year and eight months older than I. He was well-loved and respected by all of us.

About 30 cars from the Antique Auto Mushers and Alaskan Model A’s lined the Anchorage Lutheran Church parking lot, and after the service we gave a resounding “21-horn salute.”

I’m sure that in return, Ted was giving us that characteristic laugh–the one we all remember–in approval.

Rest in peace, Ted. –Tom

Our group consisted of Carl Godsoe (1931 Model A pickup) Jim Fredenhagen (1929 Model A Tudor) John and Cheryl Martin (1930 Model A Coupe) Rich Golding (1928 Model A Fordor) Louie Finch (1928 Model A Special Coupe) John Tichenor (1931 Model A Pickup) Jason and Janice Tichenor (1930 Model A Pickup) Nat Gardner (1956 Ford PU), Dutch Overly (1964 MG) and Scott Hulse (1958 Rolls Royce).

The weather at the Alpine Museum in Sutton was very pleasant

and lunch provided by the 49th State Street Rodders and locals was great.

The grand finale was the annual bake sale where the proceeds would help reroof the museum. Between 50

people there was $900 raised. Very impressive for some locally-made pies and cakes. Looking forward to next year! ☯

The Valley Trash Show offered overcast skies and possibly a bit of smoke from area fires, as well as a successful fund-raising bake sale. It took place on the beautiful

grounds of the Sutton Museum.
