The Antietam battle was the bloodiest battle of the war

We know thousands of men(and secretly women dressed as men) died that day

The battle was fought on September 17th, 1862

The southern forces were led by General Robert E. Lee

The northern forces were led by General George B. McClellan

Union would attack the Confederates and would counterattack

The Confederate where heavily outnumbered

Confederate army held their ground

After the completion of the Second Battle of Bull Run, General Lee decided it was time to go on offensive

Two Union soldiers had found a copy of Lee's battle plans before the battle. However, General McClellan moved slowly on the news and never really took advantage of the knowledge

The battle was named by the Union after the nearby creek called Antietam. It was called the Battle of Sharpsburg by the South
