Session ObjectivesParticipants:- view and consider a variety of visual literacy and IT orientated experiences that can be pursued in the classroom.- are orientated as to how they could approach delivering a variety of visual literacy based and IT orientated lessons within the classroom.- have access to and knowledge of the computer and IT skills that are required by the students to create documents that show their developing understanding and application of visual literacy outcomes

- Students explore & use visual communication in order to express their ideas & interpret the ideas of others.- Students will use a range of technologies to create media works of many types.- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of a poster.

- Students will identify and analyse the structures & features characteristic of a range of visuals.- Students will identify that visuals are constructed for particular reasons.

-Students will interpret and analyse the purpose and point of view of a visual presentation.(Examples of Visual Literacy Outcomes from the PYP Language Scope and Sequence Age Ranges 7-12 years)

Computer Skills Guide Reformatting Margins on Microsoft Word-Left click ‘View’ in the top of screen tool bar, - Activate the ‘Ruler’ box by left clicking in the selection box,- Hold the left mouse button down on the left-top page ruler mark square and drag to the left, leaving a thin margin of approximately 1cm,- Do the same to the top-right ruler mark triangle;,- Decrease the size of the top margin and bottom margin to the same margin size be holding the left mouse button down on the left page margin and dragging to desired point.

Formatting Pictures Behind Text-Paste the picture on to the document,-Click the right mouse button on the picture to activate picture options,-Select ‘Text Wrapping’,-Select ‘Behind Text’(On some Word programs you need to choose ‘Format Picture’ instead to access ‘Layout’ and ‘Behind Text’ option)

Formatting Text Boxes to select no colour for ‘line’ and ‘fill’-Insert a ‘Draw Text Box’-Place the mouse cursor on the outline of the text box and click the right mouse button,-Click the left mouse button on ‘Format Text Box’ option,-Click the ‘Colors and Lines’ tab,-In the ‘Fill > Colour window select ‘No Colour’,-In the ‘Line > Colour’ window select ‘No Colour’,-Click ‘OK’ to apply the changes

Choosing Images from the Internet- Type the image required in the Google Images search window,-Choose an image that consists of at least a 500 x 450k – jpg size,-Click on the image and then select the ‘See full size image’ option,-Right click the picture and select ‘copy’ or ‘save’.

Computer Skills Guide Continued Obtaining images of completed documents via ‘Print Screen (Prnt Scrn):-Open the document you would like a photograph of,-Left click ‘View’ in the top of screen tool bar, -Select the ‘One Page’ option,-Press the Print Screen button on the keyboard (usually found on the top right hand corner keys),-Open the document you would like to paste the photograph of the document,-Click ‘Paste’.(Note, you will need to crop the pasted image, see directions below)

Cropping Pictures, Photographs or Images:-Click the picture to activate the picture and the ‘Format’ tab on the top of screen tool bar,-Click the ‘Picture Tools Format’ tab on the top right tool bar,-Click the ‘Crop’ option, (small bold rectangle grips appear on the outline of the picture to indicate the cropping tool is activated) -Drag the small bold rectangle tips to establish your desired crops,-Click the ‘Crop’ option once again to de-activate the cropping tool.

Inserting Hyperlinks:-Click the image or highlight the text you would like to hyperlink,-Click ‘Insert’ in the top of screen tool bar,- Click the ‘Hyperlink’ option,- Locate the document you would like to hyperlink to in the ‘Look In’ window and then click the document once you have found it.
