OF AGENTS IN ARIZONA REGIONAL MLS

Dear Doreen, I’m the woman who called last month to have

you list my house after I read your column. I was shocked when you refused, because my house is not in your area of expertise. Instead, you graciously referred me to another agent. I always thought agents would accept any business they could get. Well, I wanted to tell you the agent you referred me to has worked very well and my house is now sold! Thank you!

Sold by Someone ElseDear Sold,

I am a firm believer in area specialists, particularly when listing a home. I get countless calls from out-of-area agents who want to know how to promote their listing in our area. Why would a homeowner list with an agent who isn’t a specialist in the area? Incentives such as a reduced commission make no sense if the house doesn’t sell because the agent doesn’t know the local market, or is reluctant to make repeated trips to meet a buyer or to check on the property. And, don’t underestimate the marketing value of a physical office near the listing. Yes, I love referring to a smart area specialist. It’s what’s best for the client (and for my reputation)!

“L ife in abundance” is the slogan that greets visitors entering Anthem. Fast

food? Got it. Grocery stores? Three of them. Starbucks? Count ’em: four!

While some might measure abundance by the number of chain stores per capita or the number of upgrades to a house, true richness doesn’t exist without personal expression through the arts. Performing arts thrive in the area, but applied arts seem to lag a bit. So, the greater Anthem area can celebrate the arrival of a gallery amidst the chains. Gallery on the Square has opened a space just steps south of Safeway.

IT’S AN ORIGINAL Owner and international artist

Robert Hutchinson believes Anthem is a palette with potential. “The whole concept here is to bring art to Anthem,” said Hutchinson, adding that the gallery fills an artistic gap. “It’s been sorely lacking.”

Hutchinson, a native of England, has roots in art and design. Hutchinson studied art in London then got a job with Ford Motor Company, working in automotive design. It’s an experience he called “invaluable as a designer.” Later, he moved to Paris, then across the pond.

ON THE WALLS For now, the artistic offerings are

Hutchinson’s. “I’m a colorist who expresses with color and light. This is not pure abstract. Mine is more landscape impressionism with a contemporary feel,” he said. Expect works from other artists in January.

ART FOR THE PEOPLE The gallery is not just a place to

see and buy art. It’s a place to create. Hutchinson also instructs budding artists. He offers one-on-one classes or “wine and paint evenings: where groups of as many as 30 can sip wine and let the creative juices flow. Hutchinson says skill level doesn’t matter. “It’s inviting, not snobbish,” he said. “Anyone is welcome.” io

Now that more schools provide after-care, Mad Mama’s Bounce Mania has cut its after-school

care. Owner Robin Stewart said demand for the program had waned. Mad Mama’s still hosts parties, open bounce sessions and special events such as parent’s night out. Cafe Provence at Anthem Crossroads (the Fry’s plaza) closed in November. A notice on the door stated the landlord took possession of the property. Cafe Provence opened in 2010, replacing the successful Madelyn’s which closed at the end of 2008. Laserfax, an office equipment company, bought Cartridge Solutions at Anthem Shops East (Tutor Time plaza). The company shuttered the Anthem shop that supplied toner and service for office printers, and the goods and services have been absorbed by Laserfax at 2410 W. Thomas Road in Phoenix. Laserfax sells, leases and services printers and delivers to Anthem.Perfect Swim Pool Supply at Anthem Crossroads recently closed. According to the posted notice, the landlord took possession of the property due to failure to pay rent.

It joins MyBullfrog at Anthem Crossroads and Go Wireless in Tramonto—other Verizon Wireless Authorized Retailers—and the corporate store at Happy Valley Towne Center.Chiropractor Dr. Kurt Feifer had been serving patients in Anthem for 10 years when he “retired” in 2013. Hot Chocolate Mix

8 oz. bittersweet chocolate, finely ground½ cup non-fat dry milk powder1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder1 cup confectioner’s sugar1 Tbsp. sugar½ tsp. kosher salt2 tsp. vanilla extractDirections •1 Put all ingredients in food processor until ground into a fine powder. Store in airtight container. •2 Heat 1 cup of whole milk in saucepan until it starts to slightly boil. •3 Add 1/3 cup of hot chocolate mix and stir well. Return to a slight boil.

•4 Pour in favorite winter mug, top with homemade whipped cream. Enjoy.

Larry’s tip: Possibilities are endless once you master this hot chocolate mix. Experiment with a dash of cayenne pepper, instant espresso mix, almond extract, malted mix or cinnamon.

L E T ’ S E AT !

Suspicious ActivityBy Larry [email protected]

“Sir, your card has been declined. Would you like to use another form of payment?”

It was the first and only time my credit card was declined. I was crushed and embarrassed at the tender age of 33. My first thoughts were, “Lower your dang voice and just swipe it again!” Instead, I spoke with a representative of the credit company and learned that my card was suspended for suspicious activity. Huh, I thought. Apparently, eight charges in the same store over the period of two hours is suspicious activity.

I begged the representative to “unsuspend” my card because I planned on making eight more charges in the next two hours. You see, a French man changed my life. His name is Jacques Torres, and I never experienced hot chocolate this delicious in my life. I was determined to sip hot chocolate with my wife until we were escorted out of Jacques’ newly opened shop. Some folks take pride in closing down a watering hole; I took pride in closing down this little chocolate shop.

Life is way too short to drink cheap, packaged hot chocolate, so I tinkered and tinkered to try to match JT’s recipe to no avail. They don’t call him “Mr. Chocolate” for nothing. I did come close, though. I promise once you try this recipe, you will never again purchase a 12-pack of hot chocolate mix for $1. That’s what I consider suspicious activity. Ciao, Bella! io

Your perception of a situation is your reality, but do you really know the facts?

Many depictions create a perception that assisted living is not a desirable arrangement for your loved ones. How many times have you seen a nursing home in a movie and thought “I would never want to live there or put my mom or dad in a ‘home’ like that.”

Consider, though, if your parent is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s or cancer. Will you hope for the best even though you know living alone is not a good idea for them? Will you completely disrupt your family by bringing your parent to live with you?

In most cases, no decision is made until something terrible happens, forcing a decision. By then, the cost has risen and more importantly, your parent’s quality of life has plummeted.

What if mom or dad would be happier with people their own age vs. living alone and scared? What if their reality of

assisted living isn’t accurate, yet you are following their lead?

Take away the emotion and the financial considerations and ask yourself honestly: “What is in Mom’s/Dad’s best interest?” In most cases, you already know they are not safe living alone. But if you have doubts, ask yourself this: Is Mom/Dad doing the following?

• Cooking nutritious meals? • Taking medication properly?• Steady enough on their feet that falling

isn’t a high risk?• Are they around others at least four

days a week?• Getting enough exercise so

constipation and poor circulation aren’t a problem? If you answered “no” to one or more

of the above, please call or email for a tour of ASL or ASR today. See for yourself how your perception of assisted living may not be the reality.

Holiday Guests? Ho-Ho… Aaargh!By Chris [email protected]

W hen you marry, you take on more than a spouse. You inherit a family. And that

family, for better or intolerable, tends to congregate at the busiest, most stressful time of year… Deck the friggin’ halls!

When my (at the time) wife-to-be met my family, she went missing after about 30 minutes. After another 30 minutes of searching, I found her huddled in a broom closet, pupils dilated and knees clutched, chanting in a slow and monotone whisper, “your family is sooooo loud.”

Conversely, my first experience with her relatives consisted of keeping the volume of the football game muted so we could discuss, while courteously taking turns, the merits of the iMac’s new memory chip… Nerd-a-thon!

You don’t have to embrace your other half’s idiosyncrasies, but if you want to minimize the holiday body count, you might want to try and accommodate just a smidge. These pointers might help:

Have a Schedule Put together an itinerary that fits

the desires and abilities of your guests. For instance, if outdoor hiking trips are planned, alert your guests to bring the proper footwear and other items. The red clay of Sedona is murder on Nordstrom’s Christian Louboutin Collection.

Food for Thought Get an idea of your guests’ likes

and dislikes before they arrive. Stock up or better yet, plan a joint trip to the grocery store at the beginning of their stay. How was I supposed to know that the “little prince” was allergic to grilled rattlesnake? Next time I’ll remove the venom glands during preparation.

The Princess and the “Pee” Make sure the sleeping

arrangements are agreed upon before the guests arrive. We thought they would like the privacy of their own room, but we don’t have a guest room. Our daughter generously donated her room to my brother and his wife. What we didn’t anticipate was that our male cat sniffed their belongings and discovered they also had a male cat. Oopsie-poopsie!

Seven Days Make Me “Weak” Even if you love your guests, you

might hate them after about seven days of their eating your porridge, sleeping in your beds and whining about your choice of toilet tissue. If you happen to have unresolved childhood issues with your guests, seven days should give you ample time to dispose of the bodies. Overnight trips in the middle of the visit can give all parties a breather.

Remember, “Santa” quickly becomes “Satan” with just a little slip in organization. io
