    ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES

    THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

    The HF band is useful for longrange communicationsbecause these frequencies tend to bounce off theionosphere (a atmospheric layer whose lowerboundary is about 30 miles up) and the earth's

    surface. Only three transmitters would be required forglobal coverage. The effect varies with time of daydue to the effects of sunlight on the ionosphere. Theionosphere is transparent to the FM band.

    The attenuation effect of the atmosphere peaks atvarious frequencies, notably at 60 GHz due to oxygen.This frequency is used for intersatellitecommunications when it is desired that the signal notreach earth.

    The attenuation effect of the atmosphere is at a lowpoint at 94 GHz, which is in the W-band, used forradar.

    The frequency of U.S. microwave ovens (2.45 GHz) isan ISM frequency (Industrial, Scientific, Medical).

    At the high frequencies, the electromagnetic spectrumbecomes more particle-like and less wave-like.

    VISUALIZING THE ELECTROMAGNETICWAVE

    The electric field Eand the magnetic fieldHare at rightangles to each other. With the electric field alignedwith thex-axis and the magnetic field on they-axis,

    propagation is in thez-direction. Propagation is themovement of the effectof the electromagneticdisturbance. This is analogous to dropping a pebble ina pond. The ripples propagate outward from thesource of the disturbance but the water only moves invertical oscillation.

    PLANE WAVE

    A pebble dropped in a pond produces a circular wave.A plane wave presents a planar wavefront. Functionvariables within a plane have uniform amplitude andphase values. Plane waves do not exist in nature butthe idea is useful as an approximation in somecircumstances. A radio wave at great distance from

    the transmitting antenna could be considered a planewave. So treating a wave as a plane wave is to ignorethe source, hence they are also called "source-free"waves.

    Find the intensity of the electric field at distance rfrom a

    These three parameters determine whether anelectromagnetic wave has linear, circular, or ellipticalpolarization, define which direction the wave rotates intime, and describe the elongation and angular

    The divergence operation is performed on a vectorand produces a scalar. The del operator followed bythe dot product operator is read as"the divergence of"and is an operation performed on a vector. In

    rectangular coordinates, means the sum of thepartial derivatives of the magnitudes in the x,y, andzdirections with respect to thex,y, andz variables. Theresult is a scalar, and a factor of m-1 is contributed tothe units of the result.

    In the electrostatic context, divergence is the totaloutward flux per unit volume due to a source charge.For example, in this form of Gauss' law, where D is a

    FOURIER TRANSFORM EXAMPLES
