FILTRATION

Itiseasiertocleanasinglefilterthanmanyemitters.Aneffectivefilterwhichprotectsdownstreamcomponents,isanimportantfeatureofallirrigationsystems.

Fourtypesoffiltersareusedtoprotectirrigationsystems:

Screen filters –typicallyusedforrelativelycleanwater(eg.citywater)butnotrecommendedwhereorganicssuchasalgaearepresent.Theyusuallycompriseofaplasticorstainlesssteelscreenandshouldbemanuallycleanedonaregularbasisaccordingtothedegreeofcloggingthathasoccurred.Disc filters –thesearemadeupofmouldedplasticdiscs,stackedontopofoneanotherinthefilterhousing.Thediscsaregroovedaccordingtotheratingofthefilter.Thegroovesbecomegraduallyblockedovertimewiththecontaminantsinthewater.Manualcleaninginvolveslooseningthedisccartridgeandwashingthediscsindividually.Sand media filters –thesefiltersarepressurizedtankscontainingsandandareprimarilyusedwhereorganicmattercontentofthewaterishigh.Thedimensionsofthesandgrainsarechosenaccordingtothesizeoftheemitterorificetheyareintendedtoprotect.Sand separators –strictlyspeaking,thesearenotfilters,butaredevicesthatcausethewatertoberotatedinthebodyoftheequipment.Centrifugalactionforcesheavierparticleswithinthewatertomovetotheoutsideofthestreamandthenfalltothebaseoftheseparatorwheretheyarecollectedandcanberemoved.

Insummary,screenanddiscfiltersarecommonlyusedtoprotectdrippers,jets,sprayersandmini-sprinklersirrigatingresidentialgardens,andallfourfiltertypesareusedinlarge-scaleagriculturalandcommercialirrigationprojects.

Whenspecifyingfiltrationrequirements,itisnecessarytorefertotheminimumcrosssectiondimensionsofdrippersandtheminimumnozzlesizeofjets,sprayersandminisprinklers.Thedegreeoffiltrationprovidedbyafilterisdescribedeitherintermsofthesizeoftheholesinthescreeninmicrons,orthenumberofholesperlinearinch.Theconversionsgivenbelowareapproximate.

Drip IrrigationAlthoughvariable,thedimensionsofthesmallestpathwaysindripemittersareunlikelytobelessthan0.024”.Iforganicmatterispresentinthewaterathighlevels,suchanemitterwillrequireprotectionbya75micron/200meshfilter.Ifthereisonlyinorganicmatterpresent,a175micron/80meshscreenwillbeadequate.

Jets and Sprayers Minimumorificesizeisgenerallynotlessthan0.032”,inwhichcaseafilterwitha100micron/140meshscreenwillcopewithanorganicloadinthewater.A250micron/60meshscreenwillbeadequateifonlyinorganicmaterialispresent.

Mini SprinklersWithminimumorificesizearound0.06”,filterscreensizecanvaryfrom175micron/80mesh(organicmatterpresent)to500micron/35mesh(onlyinorganicmatterpresent).
