Antarctica Crossing the Circle: Southern ExpeditionAntarctica, for the naturalist and wildlife photographer is the ultimate destination. Once deemed so remote from civilization that men traded their lives to experience it, this destination is now safely accessible on modern vessels and where we can stand in awe and photograph.

This photographic journey and workshop offers you the most in-depth exploration of the Antarctic Penin-sula. Extended time in the region allows you to go beyond the Antarctic Peninsula and venture south of the Antarctic Circle, home to fantastic ice formations and wildlife including the Weddell seal. You’ll enjoy more time communing with penguins and visits to less-frequented landing sites.

• Be one of the few to venture to 66 degrees 33.7 minutes South;• Visit historic research stations in Marguerite Bay.• Witness the abundant Antarctic wildlife, including penguins, seals, whales and more;• Experience the Western Peninsula highlights and visit iconic landing sites; and• Learn about Antarctica’s geology and wildlife from onboard lecturers and specialists.

In collaboration with Quark Expeditions – the Leader in Polar Adventures, the photography workshop on this expedition, is co-organised by C4 Images & Safaris, South Africa, Iconic Images International, Aus-tralia, together with our good friend Art Wolfe, USA as the guest photographer. Art needs no introduction to photographers worldwide.

Quark Expedition’s cooperation allows us to deliver a specialised on-board and zodiac/land-based pho-tographic workshop, to make this polar expedition a very special photographic event. Together we have created a “top-drawer” photography workshop within a “first class” Antarctica expedition. You also have full access to Quark Expedition specialist polar region expedition leaders and presenters – a unique combina-tion in the one trip.

This expedition is Quark’s most southern Antarctic expedition and offers you the very best opportunities to capture the iconic images of one of the remotest part of the planet – be prepared to be overwhelmed by one of the great wonders of the natural world – all within a few meters of your lens. Your days will be busy spotting wildlife and being mesmerized by the beauty of Antarctica. Watching penguins waddling on the beach and listening to the crackling and crumbling sounds of icebergs and glaciers will become your daily environment.

Even seasoned travellers to polar regions experience a deep sense of awe and respect on their first glimpse of the much-anticipated continent. Even those who have led more than a hundred Antarctica ex-peditions, are still overcome by its formidable beauty. You are greeted by thousands of icebergs that look like modern art sculptures lining the pristine bays. Meanwhile an overwhelming profusion of wildlife is on display from penguins torpedoing through the water to predatory seals staking their claim on ice floes.

We plan to land and photograph on the mainland of the White Continent itself. From this vantage point, it is easy to understand why legendary explorers such as Roald Amundsen and Sir Ernest Shackleton were so captivated by this haunting region.

As with all voyages, passenger and vessel safety are Quark’s top priorities. Hence weather, ice or other conditions may require a change to the planned itinerary and shore excursions but that is half the fun of Polar Region exploring. Predictability is a term that has no relevance in this environment.

Quark Polar Adventure Ships and Icebreakers

Quark Expeditions has the largest and most diverse fleet of adventure ships in the Antarctic and Arctic. Travelers choose from more departures and a greater variety of itineraries than is available anywhere else. Within the fleet is the only nuclear-powered icebreaker – 50 Years of Victory – sailing to the North Pole. Every ship is equipped with Zodiacs – inflatable landing craft – for shore transfers and ocean-level cruising.

All ships are platforms for optional sea-kayaking, camping, mountaineering and cross-country skiing. Their small size enables them to sail channels and bays through which our icebreakers cannot sail. The ability to get close to landscapes and wildlife make these vessels extraordinary base camps for photographers. None of the vessels carries more than 199 passengers who share a preference for travel to remote wil-derness areas accompanied by Expedition Team members eager to share their knowledge and love for Antarctica.

We also collaborated with Quark Expeditions because of their common sense approach to pricing, limited passenger numbers and their commitment to ecological preservation and conservation. These values sit very comfortably alongside those of C4 Photo Safaris/Art Wolfe Inc./Iconic Images.

Photographic Workshop Leaders/Instructors

The photographic workshop leaders/instructors are: Art Wolfe, Shem Compion and Denis Glennon AO

All three are experienced, competent wildlife and nature photographers.

The number of participants in the photography workshop is confined to thirty. We have reserved 30 berths in a variety of cabin categories for these participants, on the vessel, Ocean Endeavour and registrations will be accepted in the order they are received. Should you require a cabin outside those reserved by us, this is possible, subject to one being available. If this is your choice, please contact us as soon as possible.

This far-reaching expedition to the islands of the South Atlantic Ocean and the Antarctic mainland, means your photography will increase exponentially and at the same time it allow you to revel in fourteen days of endless photographic opportunities as you are guided and assisted by Art, Shem & Denis.

Expect to photograph thousands of penguins in rookeries, behemoth icebergs reflecting startling greens, cyans and blues and with a very good chance to see humpback whales feeding on krill and of course the sweeping ice sheet continent of Antarctica.

Being part of a small group of like-minded photographers and continually assisted by Art, Shem & Denis to help you capture extraordinary images in the pristine wilderness of this vast polar region, is an experience of a lifetime. It is a place to inspire the imagination and touch your very soul of your being.

Photography Workshop Within The Expedition

We have booked an allotment of cabins and berths on the Ocean Endeavour so that we can take a small group of like-minded photographers to have the best possible experiences in the Antarctic. For this reason we have incorporated a photography workshop component on the expedition to make sure you gain as much tutoring, knowledge and photographic insights from the trip, as possible.

Throughout the expedition our small group will have access to:

• Exclusive on board tutoring, lectures, feedback sessions by Art Wolfe, Shem Compion and Denis Glennon. These sessions will be available only to our group and will be held independently of the other passengers on the vessel, in a separate location. This will be in addition to the normal on board lec-tures presented by the Quark Expeditions team, to which you will have full access.

• Small group photography workshops and processing sessions.• Some one-on-one interaction with the three of us who will help you get the best results possible.• More than teaching you just ‘camera settings’, you will have three enthusiastic and committed photog-

raphers who will share their creative vision, experiences, insights and artistry to help you create more compelling and striking images.

• Access to Zodiac cruises dedicated to our photographic group with Art, Shem and Denis as photogra-phy guides.

• Access to information on optimal camera settings for each scenario while you are photographing.• Guidance on Lightroom and Photoshop post processing techniques.• We will work closely with the Quark Expedition Leader to ensure that we are at the best locations for

the most time, and in the best light.• Subject to final decisions by the Captain/Expedition Leader the smaller number of passengers on-

board and the availability of sufficient zodiacs means all passengers can be ashore or cruising in zo-diacs at one time, should they wish to do so.

• Photographing from zodiacs allows you to experience the Antarctic waters at a more intimate level. As there is likely to be great light, sufficient time will be dedicated to capture the stunning landscapes, as well as the wildlife.

• Quark Expedition’s policy is to try and spend as much time as possible on land at wildlife sightings. Their and our focus will be to have you photographing on shore, amongst the wildlife, for as long as is safely possible.

• All in all, the photography workshop and expedition are designed to have a small group of nature and wildlife photographers who will have twelve nights on board one of the best smaller ships in the Ant-arctic to give them the best access to some amazing photography.

Day 2: (1 January 2016)

Charter Flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, Argentina and Embarkation.

If you have booked the optional Hotel, Flight & Transfer Package, after breakfast at the hotel, as part of the group you will transfer to the airport and board a private charter flight to Ushuaia, Argentina. Upon arrival, we’ll take a short city tour of this quaint port town before heading to the pier.

There are many photographic opportunities around the town of Ushuaia itself, the port area and as the vessel departs the harbour. As you board the vessel, Ocean Endeavour, in Ushuaia, the world’s southern-most city near the tip of Argentina, and start to become familiar with ‘your home’ for the next 14 days you cannot help but wonder about the exciting journey and photography ahead.

Once on board, you will have the chance to check out your camera gear, spend informal time with the fel-low photographers. In the early evening, you set sail and begin your voyage leaving behind Ushuaia and sail through the picturesque Beagle Channel. Sailing southward, the ship will likely be joined by swoop-ing seabirds including the mighty wandering albatross, which you will come to know well and see in your frame many times on this truly amazing photographic expedition.

Days 3 & 4: (2 & 3 January 2016)

Crossing the Drake Passage.

The waters of the Drake Passage are unpredictable, so hope for clear skies and a calm ocean. You’ll have plenty of time to gaze out at the sea, get to know your fellow travellers and chat with your Art, Shem Denis and the Quark Expedition Team. Time over these two days will be spent preparing for the exciting days ahead, with numerous obligatory educational and informative lectures from the Quark Expedition Team. You’ll learn about everything from safety procedures to the history of whaling in Antarctica.

Days 5, 6 & 7: (4, 5 & 6 January 2016)

The Antarctic Peninsula & South Shetland Islands.

With the Drake Passage left in our wake, we make our approach to Antarctica. Get your cameras ready as the continent’s coastline will make its first appearance, signalling the start of your adventure in the realm of the Antarctic. You’ll see plenty of icebergs floating by and be fixated on the surface of the ocean as curi-ous whales spout and breach before your eyes. As exciting as it can be from onboard the ship, your true exploration occurs when you disembark and set foot on the great continent. There are several potential landing sites we may visit, including Neko Harbour, Orne Harbour or Paradise Harbour.Your days will be busy spotting wildlife and being mesmerized by the beauty of Antarctica. Watching penguins waddling on the beach and listening to the crackling and crumbling sounds of icebergs and glaciers will become your daily environment.

If in-flight bird photography is your interest you will be in “bird heaven” and if you have never tried it, we will show you, using short lectures and practical sessions, how to master this challenging but extremely rewarding genre of photography. The friendly Quark Expedition polar specialists will continue to fascinate you with heroic stories of some of the earliest explorers of Antarctica. You will also learn about Polar con-servation – a theme particularly close to the hearts of Quark expedition leaders and crew. The anticipation grows particularly as you cross the Antarctic Convergence and notice a dramatic drop in temperature. Special attention will be given to ensure your camera gear continues to function properly in the increas-ingly harsher climate.

Days 8 & 9: (7 & 8 January 2016)

The Antarctic Circle.

Crossing the Antarctic Circle is an impressive achievement, as most expeditions to the Peninsula do not reach this far south, which is officially ‘charted’ at 66° 33’ S. We continue to photograph some of the most amazing subjects on the planet.

Days 10 & 11 (9 & 10 January 2016)

Northbound Along the Peninsula.

By now, your knowledge of Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins will be matched by your ability to differ-entiate between a leopard, fur or Weddell seal. Terms like ‘bergy bits’ and black ice will seem normal too, yet there are still many tales to be told. As you head north, Zodiac excursions will continue to maximise photography opportunities, while the Quark Expedition team will continue with presentations, while giving you time to reflect on everything you’ve experienced. Art, Shem & Denis will continue to help you with your photography.

Days 12 & 13: (11 & 12 January 2016)

Drake Passage to Ushuaia.

As you depart this magical place, unsurprisingly with a longing to stay, and make your way back, again across the Antarctic Convergence and the Drake Passage before rounding the infamous for sailors, Cape Horn, much of your time will be spent sharing and reflecting on the wonderful experiences, not to mention the captivating and compelling images you will treasure for ever.Re-crossing the Drake, Antarctica fades away and you’ll be left with a collection of unique images and memories to last a lifetime. Animated con-versations with your newfound friends and photographers will make the time crossing the Drake Passage ‘fly by’, hopefully in kindly seas and fair winds. The Quark Expedition team will round up their series of lectures whilst Art, Shem & Denis will help you ‘polish off’ the best of the best of your photos.

Days 14: (13 Jnauary 2016)

Disembark in Ushuaia, for charter flight back to Buenos Aires.

If you have booked the optional Hotel, Flight & Transfer Package you will be transported to the airport for the charter flight back to Buenos Aires

After breakfast aboard the ship, it is time to part ways and say goodbye to Art, Shem & Denis and the Quark Expedition team.

After disembarkation, you may have a little time to explore Ushuaia, depending on your flight departure time.

Important Reminder: Embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy – and excitement – of expedition travel. There are no guarantees that we can achieve everything we set out to accomplish. A measure of flexibility is something all of us must bring to a voyage. There are nearly 200 recognized sites in the Ant-arctic Peninsula and South Shetlands and the places mentioned above may be changed to others equally as interesting.

AntarcticaAntarctica is Earth’s southernmost continent, con-taining the geographic South Pole. It is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.0 million km2 (5.4 million sq mi), it is the fifth-largest conti-nent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. For comparison, Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) in thickness, which extends to all but the north-ernmost reaches of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents. Antarctica is con-sidered a desert, with annual precipitation of only 200 mm (8 inches) along the coast and far less in-land. The temperature in Antarctica has reached −89 °C (−129 °F). There are no permanent human residents, but anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people reside throughout the year at the research stations scattered across the continent. Only cold-adapted organisms survive, including many types of algae, bacteria, fungi, plants, protista, and certain animals, such as mites, nematodes, penguins, seals and tar-

1. What should I know about vehicle etiquette?

Vehicle etiquette and consideration for fellow photographers:

On all our tours we may ask participants to rotate seats in the vehicles, taking it in turn to sit in the more popular seats in the front and the less popular ones in the rear. This requirementapplies to everyone. If there is some reason why you can’t take your turn in the back of a vehicle (e.g. a bad back or travel sickness) please inform our office at the time of booking to see if we can accommodate you. We regret that anyone failing to inform us of such limitations before the tour will be expected to rotate seats in the same way as everyone else.

There is also other vehicle etiquette that we would like to ask you to adhere to. We give these guidelines to ensure a positive experience for all when on safari.

• Please keep noise levels low at an animal sighting. This allows people to enjoy the set-ting and listen to sounds that the animals may be making. Often these alert us to somebehaviour and allows us to anticipate any action that may occur.

• If you are seated in the front of the vehicle, please have consideration for the peoplebehind you. A pre-arranged chat at the start of the safari is an excellent way to work out how you will be photographing and working around each other. It provides a positive workingenvironment and allows everyone to photograph happily in the vehicle.

• When photographing, keep movement to a minimum. If you are going to shift places, then alert the others and do so as swiftly and directly as possible.

• Please do not do anything to effect the behaviour of the animals.

• Your driver/ranger has to adhere to certain rules and etiquette at sightings that you may not be aware of. This may mean you cannot stop exactly where you would like. Please bear this in mind at sightings, especially when there are other vehicles from other camps around.

2. What technical equipment or requirements do I need for the workshops?

For workshops a Digital SLR camera is recommended, with at least a 200mm lens to capture wildlife im-ages. A laptop for downloading is also helpful, although we can download image if necessary. On a Photo tour, two DSLR camera bodies and lenses are advised. The type of lenses you take depend entirely on the destination. We will advise according to each tour should you need advise.

3. Are there any extras I need to bring on a trip?

Most of our tours are all inclusive and we offer advice as to what to bring along. This is due to the differ-ent seasons and conditions of each safari. C4 Photo Safaris will always advise if you will be traveling in a Malaria area. If the tour is not all-inclusive, it will be clearly stated.

frEQUEntLY AsKEd QUEstions

20

Page 21: AntArcticA Photo ExPEdition€¦ · Antarctica Crossing the Circle: Southern Expedition Antarctica, for the naturalist and wildlife photographer is the ultimate destination. Once

4. Why do you choose such specific destinations for the Tours and Work-shops?

Each destination is hand picked by us for the beauty and photographic potential it holds. C4 Photo Safaris only travel to destinations that offer the best of what we are looking to photograph. If we know an area holds excellent wildlife, we will take tours there. There are many factors to consider- Seasonal variation can have a large impact on wildlife movements, animal and bird migrations, localalised animal movements etc. We of course take all this into consideration, ensuring that our tours are going to the best locations at the best times.

5. Is there any cell phone reception in the areas?

In most game reserves and wild areas there is no cell/mobile phone reception.

6. How safe am I in the game reserves in Africa?

C4 Photo Safaris only operate with lodges and reserves that use the best rangers. They ensure your safety whilst on safari and use very strict procedures when dealing with dangerous animals. Each lodge has a safety briefing on arrival which, if adhered to, makes your stay very safe.

7. What insurance/coverage do I need?

Your normal travel insurance covers you for safaris in Africa. C4 Photo Safaris are comprehensively in-sured for medical emergencies on safaris.

8. For Malaria, which tablets should I take, if any?

C4 Photo Safaris are not allowed to prescribe medical advice to clients. We will advise if the area visited is in a malaria area. You will need to consult with your local GP for medical advise on Malaria and prevention.

9. What about allergies?

Most safari camps are able to handle food allergies but not with the degree of skill that five star hotels do. The best way to handle an intolerance, is to simply avoid eating that particu-lar food as the menus in camp are quite diverse. If you have a more uncommon allergy, like beingallergic to eggs, and you know of a solution (like a powder substitute), then bring it along on sa-fari. If you have a deadly allergy, then be sure to travel with your own medication and request in camp that that ingredient be removed from the kitchen and the store. As a side note, it ishelpful to remember that many safari camps have to fly produce in or truck it in, overhundreds of miles. Furthermore, the camps, although impressive looking, actually have minimalinfrastructure behind the scenes. If you assist the camp in managing your allergy, it will be agreat help.

10. What about medicine, diseases and vaccinations?

Please check in with your local travel clinic or doctor for advice. From my experience, ayellow fever and hepatitis vaccination is a must, while the plethora of others areoptional. Our safaris are conducted in low risk malarial areas but for your own peace of mind, werecommend that you take a prophylactic. In areas where you get tsetse flies in East Afri-ca, humans are not the primary disease carries, and contracting Tryps is very rare. There isnothing you can do about these flies except to dress appropriately (keep reading) and to ap-ply mosie-guard. None of our current safari destinations carry significant amounts of tsetsi flies. The camps do have medicine kits and there is always an evacuation plan. We do howev-er find it practical to always travel through Africa with the following items: Immodium (keep this handy when traveling) - Buscopan (for tummy cramps) - Pain killers (that contain par-acetamol and a muscle relaxant) - Antihistamine cream and tablets for any allergic reactions - Melatonin to help speedy recovery from jetlag - Any medicine or ointments that you would normally take at home - Mosquito repellant - A product called Mosie-guard for areas where Tsetsi Flies occur (manu-factured in the UK and Deet does not work) - Tweezers for any thorns or splinters - Re-hydrants sachets (very important) - Disinfectant or antibiotic cream (just for nicks, cuts or grazes) - Plasters (to cover nicks, cuts or grazes)

11. Can I drink water and eat fresh produce on safari?

We advise that you only drink bottled water, which is always available in camps. Avoid ice as this is often made from local water which although is generally safe to drink, your foreign tummies might disagree! It is safe to eat fresh produce.

12. What about food on safari?

Both East and much of Southern Africa was a British colony and as such, you can expect that type of cuisine. The breakfasts usually consist of cereals and a hot English breakfast. Lunch-es are usually light with a variety of salads and always a meat option. Dinners are traditionalEnglish affairs usually with a soup starter and freshly baked camp bread. The main course will usually be a roast of sorts, with vegetables. Dessert is usually a simple affair consisting of fruit or a baked pudding. You will not go hungry! (A side note to mention is that between meals there are often not snacks readily available and breakfast is often only later in the morning. You might want to bring a few snacks or energy bars if you have a problem keeping your sugar levels up.)

13. Any luggage restrictions?

The reality is that on any scheduled charters in Africa, there will be luggage restrictions. Short of charter-ing your own flight (which we can do), our advice is to bring only the essential camera equipment. Having too much equipment can actually hinder your photography. Also, you can get washing done in camp and with a fairly moderate to hot climate, you can afford to pack light. In short, bring fewer clothes so that you can bring more camera gear! Depending on the safari you book, we will be able to advise you on exact weight restrictions.

14. What amount of spending money should I bring along?

Our tours cover all travel, food and accommodation costs (unless otherwise stated). This means that spending money can be kept to souvenirs, curios and books. This normally amounts to Euro 10.00 per person per day.

15. Commercial representation and wildlife photography consulting

C4 Photo Safaris has the full capacity to plan and run commercial photo shoots for professional clients. We are able to supply you with the best guides in the wildlife photography industry as well as organize and run all your ground handling logistics for the shoot. No other person has any rights over the photographs taken by a guide representing C4 Photo Safaris.
