Shore excurSionS
Following years o experience navigating Antarctic waters,
the A&K expedition team knows just where and when
to position Le Boreal or maximum access to wildlie
and spectacular views. With the exception o days at sea,
two shore excursions are planned or each day (weather
conditions permitting). Your expedition leader, who
reviews saety and conditions on shore, precedes each
excursion with a brieng. Board your Zodiac sturdy, motorized rubber boats designed by Jacques Cousteau
or sae operations in rough and shallow waters with a
group o no more than 12 passengers, and head to shore.
On shore, activities vary depending on terrain, but expect
your expert naturalist guide to explain and demystiy
every sight you see. Encounter diverse and hardy wildlie
native to your destination just a ew eet away, ready
subjects or your camera. In the Falkland Islands, stay
along the coast and stroll past rockhopper penguin or hike
or better views o a thousand-strong colony. In South
Georgia, pay your respects to Sir Ernest Shackleton whenyou visit his gravesite in the company o a historian with
lielong experience in the great explorers lie. And in
Antarctica, tiptoe around gentoo penguin waddling by or
guarding their newly hatched chicks.
on-Board activitieS
A&K Antarctica expeditions take ull advantage o days
at sea to shed light on every aspect o your journey the
quintessential sights as well as the elements you probably
never considered. Toughtul lectures in the Teatre
cover topics ranging rom the practical (how to master
your digital camera) and the enriching (an introductionto Southern Ocean whales) to the thought-provoking (the
unsung role o penguins in Antarctic exploration) and
personal (a rsthand account by lecturer Bob Burton on
overwintering in Signy Island).
Our expedition sta is also constantly on the lookout or
marine lie rom the deck, and impromptu whale and
seabird sightings are enhanced by the play-by-play o
expert guides.
Palmer reSearch Station
On the A&K Philanthropic Journey (see page 26), you mayvisit the Palmer Research Station. Te station monitors
changes in climate and how that aects sea habitats,
regional oceanography and terrestrial seabird nesting sites
During your visit, you meet the scientists and researchers
conducting this valuable work.

We awoke to ice-covered mountains reecting
o the surace o Paradise Bay. We dressed and
made our way to the dining room or breakast.
We re-boarded the Zodiacs or a tour o the bay.
Some o us stopped at a colony o blue-eyed
shags tending to their young perched on cli
ledges high above us. Patches o ice and colossal
icebergs dotted the bay. We came across what
seemed like a Zodiac in distress but it turnedout to be a bar ull o bubbly. We toasted our
continental landing with champagne, reecting
on the incredible morning.
Our cruise director assistedus onto a Zodiac. As we
motored ashore in our small
group we had one thing
in mind: we were about
to set oot on Antarctica.
We touched terra frma at
the Argentine Almirante
Brown Station in Paradise
Bay, on the mainland o
the Antarctic Peninsula. As
we planted our eet on thecontinent itsel, many o us
were overwhelmed by the
emotion o this milestone.
We hiked up the peak
behind the station or a
view o Paradise Bay, which
sprawled out below us.
We enjoyed lunch on the deck, scanning or seal on
ice oes and watching the ever-changing mountainsalong our route through the Errera Channel. Te
executive che had prepared a delicious hot soup and
chili, which we enjoyed by the pool deck so we didnt
miss any wildlie sightings. As lunch drew to a close,
a call came rom the bridge that a large group o
humpback whales was eeding up ahead. We grabbed
cameras and made our way to watch the show.

Following a brieng by our expedition leader, we went to the deck to watch our approach to Cuverville Island.Upon landing, we decided to simply sit on the cobble beach, taking in the sights all around. Many o us spent as
much as two hours watching thousands o gentoo penguin that surrounded us, strolling by and eeding their chicks.
Some o us also took a hike up a ridge to a point where we could absorb the immensity o the penguin colony.
Te ride back to the ship was bumpy, yet another ace o
Antarctica revealing itsel. Aer warming up with a shower,
we joined our shipmates in the bar, where storytelling and
laughter lled our early evening.
Aer a gourmet dinner, some o us
lapped the outer deck, with spectacular
mountains wherever we looked. We
retired or the night early we would be

by 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, and we didnt
want to miss a thing.
