Questions for BHP Billiton What does BHP Billiton look for in candidates? Apart from the relevant qualification, the primary attribute I’m looking for is attitude. Skills can be taught and experience is gained over time but attitude is difficult to change. What is more important, grades or experience? o More well rounded? Or more someone with the best grades? You are a graduate and therefore have limited experience. Good grades indicate the ability to work hard and focus on your studies. In the initial screening of resumes, I look for some work experience. It’s good if the work experience is in an associated field but part time work over a number of years in MacDonald’s is great too! Where can an opportunity with BHP Billiton take me in the business? o What is the timeframe? Joining BHP Billiton as a graduate can take you as far in your career as your ability will allow. The timeframe depends on you and the opportunities but an engineer might typically spend 2 years as a graduate, 4 years as an Engineer, 3 years as a Senior Engineer and 3 years as a Superintendent. Realistically it will take you 10 years or so to be an Engineering Manager. In terms of Vacation Work, if you’re not available during that time – is that redundant? If you are not available then you can’t work. Asking for involvement in student clubs, what are you actually looking for? o Is club involvement essential for applications? Involvement in a student club is not essential for applying. However we do look for well-rounded individuals with good grades, some work experience and some involvement in outside activities like sports, associations, voluntary work, church involvement etc. Specializing in a different area, such as Environmental, would you be disadvantaged? No. We have a large Environmental group that is involved in gaining approvals prior to mining, monitoring environmental activities and adherence to guidelines
