My Ducati motorcycle, a 2006 Monster, is a beautiful piece of machinery with every detail integrated into the design of the bike as a whole. The Monster is a very stripped-down, less-is-more model that reveals its parts and pieces – and every element, even a bright yellow suspension spring, is thoughtfully considered and intentional.

I first saw my Ducati at a dealership in a room full of motorcycles, but the Ducati was just so pretty! The height, length, and girth were exactly right. The balance of the mir-rors, the handle bars and the gas tank were handled beauti-fully. Then I did a little research and found that the company has an exceptional story of quality and longevity. Buying a Ducati is an investment, but it will last a long time. Many of my purchasing decisions are based on longevity and quality, which may actually be the same thing.

I’ve had the motorcycle for five years and the reputation of the Ducati brand manifests itself in the bike’s performance on the road. Everything down to the bolts and washers holding the bike together is about quality. The bits that hold my rear view mirror in place are equal to the whole. Design and quality go all the way through and that says something about the in-tegrity of the company and why it has enjoyed such longevity.

It is essential to feel comfortable on your motorcycle. If you don’t feel comfortable, if you feel awkward when you’re pulling out of a driveway or passing an 18-wheeler on a freeway, chances are you could get hurt. The reliability of the Ducati bike, the fact that it is easy to handle and control, goes back once again to the level of design and quality. In a sense the quality encapsulates you when you are on the bike.

ProfileHunter Beckham is a Principal of SWT Design in St. Louis. He has over 15 years of landscape architecture experience with special interest in sustainable practices. Hunter is integrally involved with asla, serving on the Government Affairs Advisory Committee; as part of the Sustainable Design and Development Professional Practice Network; and as a current trustee and past president of asla St. Louis. Hunter serves on the St. Louis Regional Green Building Council. His favorite piece of technology is cruise control, because it helps him avoid speeding tickets.

I first bought my Sintesi Gogo dining chairs 15 years ago. Recently, I bought a few more because they are very comfortable and come in these beautifully light, playful colors. I have the chairs in vanilla, butter and lime. I love color and respond to it physiologically. Color brings light into a room and gives me energy. And these chairs have become the centerpiece of my dining room.

Gogo chairs are quite durable. This is not a product you replace or discard after a year even though they are made of plastic, which is often a cheap, throwaway material. But plastic can also be quite sophisticated and the Gogo chairs have a lasting design appeal, as well as durability. You can even use them outside. If they get dirty, just rinse them off.

I like these chairs, too, because the design takes into consideration how you use a chair and what it is that you want from a chair. The armrests flow organically from the seat and back and make the chair very comfortable, which facilitates the idea of having a nice, long meal with friends.

The design is modern, very Sixties, with a Mod or Pop sensibility, but also quite accessible. After all, I bought my first Gogo chairs in Milwaukee, which was “old school” at the time, but was also beginning to explode culturally. This tells us something about where good design can go and what it can do, as well as how aesthetics get recycled or continue to be relevant and appealing.

I think having these chairs makes me a little bit more proud of my living space, maybe a little more sociable and willing to invite people into my dining room. I’m always proud to have people sit down to a meal with these chairs. In my own work, I hope to create something that inspires people or helps to create a good experience and the Gogo chairs are certainly aligned with that intent.

Before I bought my Mini Cooper I thought that Mini was a great brand – fun and interesting and different. And four years after buying my Mini, I still think it was a good decision. It’s a cool car. Every detail is carefully considered, not arbitrary.

Life inside the Mini Cooper is comfortable. There are small LED lights placed where a little light is useful – by the door handle, where the seat belt attaches – and you can change the color of the lights if and when you like. These little design moves are cool and since most of us sit in our cars more than we would like, those details help make our day just that much better.

The Mini Cooper is known for its look, but everything embodies quality. In four years, nothing has broken. I took the car in for one minor adjustment and even that was a good experience. The service person handed me the keys to another Mini and then called me when my car was ready. When you talk to the people at the dealership, you can tell they believe in the product. Word of mouth sells the car.

Right from the start, you have a different experience with the Mini brand. You can customize everything – the color, the stripes, the shift knob – so that you get a car that fits you. Your Mini is an extension of you. After you buy the car, you can go online and check on the progress of your car in what they call the “birth canal.” Today, it’s being painted. I’ve had a life-long interest in photography and when I was finally ready to invest in equipment, I chose the Nikon D60 DSLR. I couldn’t be happier. Although the camera is a bit bulkier than its rivals due to a contoured and rubberized handgrip, that detail also makes it very pleasing to use. A place shaped for your thumb adds to user comfort and control.

Although the camera body is primarily plastic, which reduces the cost and weight, it feels substantial and balanced even if you attach a large, heavy lens. The lens attachment rings are made of metal, and snap together with a reassuring click that reminds me of a door closing on a really nice car. The sound lets you know that the lens is in place and also reflects the quality of the well-considered design details.

For someone making an initial foray into photography, the external settings and buttons are clean, minimal and very well organized. Everything is placed just where you want it. The menu and camera functions are also intuitive, yet complex enough to give me room to grow as a photographer. The camera is powerful without being intimidating. Despite its complexity, using the D60 quickly became second nature to me.

The D60’s ease of use has helped to boost my ability and confidence. In fact, it has opened up a new world of creativity in portrait photography. Everything about the camera conspires to create a fun, inspiring experience.

Table tops, seating surfaces and receptacle bases protected by the Fusion Advantage have a thick plastisol coating that is permanently heat fused to heavy-duty steel, creating an impervious rustproof barrier. This oven-cured plastisol has an average thickness of 1/4"

We offer a limited twenty-year warranty against structural failure of all recycled plastic products from splitting, fungal decay, and insect damage. Anova offers a limited five-year warranty against structural failure of all natural stone products.

Anova banners are covered by a three-year warranty from the date of purchase when installed on Anova banner brackets. Banners otherwise installed have a one-year warranty. Anova styrene signs are covered by a three-year warranty from the date of purchase.

Warranty StipulationSThe above warranties commence on the date of purchase. The structural warranty is only valid if the product has been assembled and installed per the instruction provided with each shipment and item. These warranties do not cover acts of misuse, abuse, accidents, lack of maintenance, vandalism or natural disasters. Any alterations to the product after delivery will void these warranties.

Should any failure occur within these periods, Anova will correct the part or parts by repairing or replacing the defective parts to your satisfaction, at no cost to you.

Recycled MateRialsOur recycled plastic lumber has a 95% recycled content by weight with at least 90% of that coming from post consumer content. This recycled plastic lumber does not emit or contain any VOC materials, and is considered to be low or non-toxic. On average, the steel used in our products is made of 70% recycled material and our aluminum extrusions are 85% recycled material.

Most importantly, our prod-ucts are built to last a very long time. Going well beyond the 5- or 7-year warranty, many customers have had our products in service for more than 20 years. That long life translates into minimized environmental impact.

eNviRONMeNtally sustaiNable PROcesses aNd systeMs Anova is constantly working to improve efficiencies in our production processes to reduce both energy consumption and scrap. In 2007, we changed from anodized coating to polyester powder coating in order to reduce pollutants created during the coating process. We also added reclaiming filters to our powder coating lines which reduce the amount of wasted material. Anova manufacturing locations are centrally located in the Midwest.

Nearly all product components come from suppliers less than 200 miles from our facili-ties. A majority of products ship to job sites within a 500 mile radius of one or both of our locations. Most Anova products ship in recy-clable cardboard and/or recycled skids.

The Anova Timeline

The company was issued its first patent based on our design for the original 55 gallon trash receptacle.

Our coating technology was acquired and patented in our Winona, Minnesota plant.

We began sponsoring the Southern Illinois University of Carbondale’s Industrial Design Program. This innovative collaboration allows students to benefit from the experience of designing products for the real world and offers the thrill of seeing a winning concept brought to manufacture. This program partners junior or senior level design students with Anova for a portion of the semester. The project focuses on how design can meet the demands of ergonomics and aesthetics along with cost, marketing and manufacturing realities.

We created an industry-first iPad app and launched the new Anova brand.

We sold our first receptacle as Clean City Squares The first receptacles were assembled in a 500 square-foot

warehouse on Washington Avenue in St. Louis. It had no heat and one light bulb hanging from the ceiling. During
