elcome to the 2018 WHorley Carnival with this year’s theme of
Heroes and Villains.
The parade will form up in the Victoria Road car park and, leaving at 12.30pm, travel to the A23 Recreation Ground via the town centre where we expect it to arrive around 1pm. The full parade route can be found in this programme.
The floats will be judged by the Mayors of Reigate & Banstead and Horley before the parade sets off.
Two of the four bands, before joining the parade, will be performing in the pedestrian precinct and outside Costa Coffee.
There will be a full programme of arena events starting at 12 noon and running throughout the afternoon. New for this year are Paws for Thought, a dog display team, and the Black Eagle Gymnastics Team.
Also new features around the ground will be Amazing Animal Encounters petting zoo and interactive talking cycling characters from Animatronics. The reptiles will be making a welcome return, also Owls About Town and the Punch and Judy show.
The evening fireworks display sponsored by Beach’s Funfair which will start at 9.45pm
approximately. There will be no entry charge to attend.
I would like to acknowledge the hard work put in by the organising team which has comprised Horley Lions, 41 Club, East Surrey Guides, Susy Radio, Horley Town Council, Chamber of Commerce and Alex Goddard.
Please take the time to visit the many stalls around the ground, many of which are from these and other community groups.
The list of parade participants, arena events and stall holders was correct at the time of going to print and is subject to later additions and cancellations.
I would like to thank our many sponsors who include Gatwick Airport Ltd, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council Councillors and those local companies and individuals listed in the ‘thank you‘ page at the back of this programme; also the numerous local companies who have sponsored this programme.
Thank you for supporting your Carnival.

Dave Wardell, Finn was badly hurt and almost died
from his injuries. Four hours of surgery and months
of rehabilitation later, Finn’s now recovered and was
named animal of the year. Dave is campaigning for
‘Finn’s law’ to make sure animals are protected in
the line of duty and not considered ‘property’
so the criminal is held accountable for injury.

needed help. When a motorcyclist finally stopped, LuLu
jumped up, leading him back all the way to Jo Ann so he
could call for help. What a clever pig you are, LuLu!

The most successful pirate in history was
a Chinese woman called Ching Shih, who
commanded over 1,800 pirate ships and
an estimated 80,000 men in the South
China Sea during the 19th century.
Bartholomew Roberts, also
known as "Black Bart",
captured over 400 ships
during his time.
Highwaymen were armed robbers in
the age of horse-pulled carriages.
They would force the coaches to stop
and then rob the rich passengers.
Highwaymen had an average life
expectancy of 28. Anyone caught and
convicted of being a highwayman
would be hanged.
Anywhere wild and without
many people was popular
with highwaymen - Reigate
Heath was a known
dangerous area!
Claude Duval was a famous
French-born highwayman, who
robbed coaches around London. He
was reported to be well-dressed and
polite, and once asked for a dance
with one of his victims!
HISTORICALHISTORICALVILLAINSVILLAINS
All pirate crews had to follow
the Pirate Code - a signed
agreement of all the rules that
needed to be obeyed on a
pirate ship.
The most famous
highwayman, Dick Turpin, was
caught living under a false name
when he wrote home for help and
the local postman recognised his
handwriting!
Pirates were the criminals of
the sea, stealing anything and
everything being sent across the
ocean including gold, silver,
alcohol, and sugar!
Blackbeard put slow-burning
matches under his hat before
battle, to make it look like he
was on fire!

WW1Hero
William Coltman
was the most highly
decorated
non-commissioned
officer of the War.
His Christian beliefs
prevented him from
using weapons.
He helped injured
soldiers and was
awarded the Victoria
Cross (the highest
award) without
firing a single shot.
Suffragettesand suffragists
campaigned for a woman’s right to
vote. Leaders like Millicent Fawcett and
Emmeline Pankhurst were vocal about
the unfairness of woman having to
obey laws and pay taxes while having
no say in the process of making those
laws. Suffragettes believed in “deeds
not words” -- they interrupted
meetings, vandalised Oxford Street,
chained themselves to Buckingham
Palace and went on hunger strike
when imprisoned. After standing down
their protests and supporting the war
effort during WW1, in 1918 women
over 30 were given the right to vote.
JosiahWedgwood
He’s known for his trademark style blue and white pottery – but did you know
Wedgwood also campaigned for the abolishment of the slave trade? From 1787 until his
death in 1795, Wedgwood actively helped in the Abolition of Slavery cause. His
medallion with a slave in chains and the words: ‘Am I not a man and a brother’ were

WW1Hero
William Coltman
was the most highly
decorated
non-commissioned
officer of the War.
His Christian beliefs
prevented him from
using weapons.
He helped injured
soldiers and was
awarded the Victoria
Cross (the highest
award) without
firing a single shot.
Suffragettesand suffragists
campaigned for a woman’s right to
vote. Leaders like Millicent Fawcett and
Emmeline Pankhurst were vocal about
the unfairness of woman having to
obey laws and pay taxes while having
no say in the process of making those
laws. Suffragettes believed in “deeds
not words” -- they interrupted
meetings, vandalised Oxford Street,
chained themselves to Buckingham
Palace and went on hunger strike
when imprisoned. After standing down
their protests and supporting the war
effort during WW1, in 1918 women
over 30 were given the right to vote.
JosiahWedgwood
He’s known for his trademark style blue and white pottery – but did you know
Wedgwood also campaigned for the abolishment of the slave trade? From 1787 until his
death in 1795, Wedgwood actively helped in the Abolition of Slavery cause. His
medallion with a slave in chains and the words: ‘Am I not a man and a brother’ were
attached to hat pins, brooches and other items to show and encourage support for the
cause. He produced and distributed the medallions all at his own expense.

BULLIES!BULLIES!LOCALVILLAIN
S-LOCALVILLAINS-
Whatisbullying?
Bullying is when someone uses
words or actions to deliberately hurt
someone else. It can be physical, like
hitting, fighting or breaking their
things, or it can be emotional, like
name calling, shunning, spreading
rumours or sending mean messages
over social media.
Areyoubeingbullied?
It’s normal to joke around and tease
your friends, but that’s different from
bullying – if you have a hard time making
it stop, and you are feeling physically
or emotionally hurt, then it’s bullying.
Bullying can happen to ANYONE.
Remember: If you are being bullied, it is
NOT your fault! Nope. Never. Not one bit!
If you are being bullied, tell someone: your
parents, a teacher or trusted adult. With them,
you can make a plan of how to feel safe again
and to make the bullying stop.
Areyouabully?
Sometimes kids who bully might think that it’s cool,
fun or just “no big deal”, but think about it – what is
cool or fun about hurting someone? Name calling,
tripping someone, laughing at them, leaving them out,
ignoring them on purpose – how can hurting someone
possibly be “no big deal?”
If you think your behaviour might be causing another person to
feel hurt, alone or scared, remember that you can change. Think
about why you are behaving this way, and talk to an adult or friend
that you trust about what you can do to change that.
Bullying is never okay, cool, or acceptable.
No one EVER deserves to be
bullied.

The Grenfell Tower Firefighters
Two hundred firefighters responded to the Grenfell disaster
using 40 engines, risking their lives and working in
terrifying conditions to save as many lives as possible.
Karin Williams, a lollipop lady from
Wales, used her body as a human shield
to protect children from a runaway car.
Abigail Bamber, a trained nurse, saved a stabbing victim’s life
on her day off when she saw him bleeding and rushed over to
help. She administered CPR until the ambulance arrived.
PC Steve Norton saved a sick baby’s life by sprinting
to a nearby hospital with the baby in his arms.
Here’s green fingered Jim Williamson, community hero! With
Jan Hardy and other volunteers, they ka-powed a patch of
wasteland at the Russells Crescent junction into an oasis for nature.
Youdon’thavetochangetoworldtomakeadifference!FayeWhite, former captain of England Women’s Football Team,
was born and raised in Horley. She started training when just ten
years old, and by 14 she was a first-team player at Horsham Ladies.
She was called up to the England team while still playing for
Horsham, and went on to play for Arsenal Ladies, becoming captain
as well as playing over ninety matches with the England squad. She
retired from international football in 2012, and now appears
regularly as co-commentator and studio pundit on television and
radio. Go Faye!
