Another Floor Curling Season is finished and reigning supreme is the rink of Harvey Norstrom,

Darlene Carter, Walter Klepachek, and Audrey Ellis. Our Tuesday evening league and

Wednesday evening league top teams faced off mid-April in the playoffs. This team has proven

it is the one to beat next year. Players can keep up their skills over the summer on Tuesday

evenings at 6:30 pm for drop-in curling fun. New curlers are welcome, too.

Message from the President

At our Board meeting in April as part of the Board training, Peter Kossowan gave a presentation on Parliamentary Procedure which was well received. As a result there was a short Board meeting afterwards to deal with the essentials. On May 01 several members of the Board and staff attended an event put on by SAGE honoring nominees and recipients at which Gordon Block was nominated. Congratulations, Gordon. Also at this event was another member of SEESA who was nominated by her Community Association, Congratulations, Shirley Galway. Thanks to all of the volunteers who contributed time at the Casino and Rummage Sale. One more item I want to share with you is that on June 08 Jane and I have a wedding anniversary. Thank you my dear for being my wife, lover, partner and friend for the past 55 years and here’s to the next 55. God Bless, John B. - President

Another spring is upon us! Oh the joy of digging in the dirt and rejoicing at the plants renewing themselves again. What is it about working in the garden and getting really dirty that is so satisfying?

I have been working on many committees: By-laws, Rules for Standing Committees, Personnel, 4 Western Province Floor Curling, and Capilano Seniors Fair to mention a few. The rest of the staff is also busy on many committees. If you need to meet with a staff member on a one to one basis, please call before dropping by. We feel very bad when someone makes a special trip here to see us and alas, we are busy in a meeting. Save yourself some steps and give us a call or drop us an email (for all you computer savvy seniors).

So many exciting events are happening in the month of June: Volunteer Appreciation, Lifetime Members Luncheon, Community Art Show and Spoken Word event, and Capilano Mall Seniors Fair. These are all over and above our regular classes, programs and events. And coming in July—dust off your Klondike attire—Klondike Kate is coming for breakfast. More details on all of the above mentioned events are within this newsletter.

I have five $5.00 coffee cards for the first 5 people to tell me that they read the newsletter on-line, and no longer pick up a paper copy. Contact me in person, phone or email. It’s a little early, and it’s a little secret—Mary Anne will be celebrating her 50th birth-day on July 2nd! (shhh)

OUTREACH NEWS

Are you a senior who has had awkward or hurtful situations with your adult children? Sometimes our adult children can demand money or property or be hurtful verbally or even physically. Often this happens after a spouse has passed away. If you would like to make changes in these relationships there is a safe place where you can talk confidentially to a counselor and/or a social worker. These problematic relationships are more common than you know. I have been co-facilitating these groups with The City of Edmonton for over nine years and have seen relief in the eyes of those attending this group. Please call 780-477-2929 and ask about Relationships With Adult Children, a support group that meets twice a month all year. Ask your Outreach Coordinator at SEESA if you have any questions.

If you can volunteer in Outreach by reaching out to isolated seniors in the community please come see me. If you know a senior who seems as if he or she could use a little help, seems depressed or isolated or are in need of services, I will do my best to serve you and find solutions.

Four Province Floor Curling

Bonspiel is coming to SEESA

This fall, September 14 & 15, floor curling teams from the four western provinces of BC, AB, SK and MB, will be competing in a bonspiel and SEESA is playing host to this

event. Many volunteers will be needed for a variety of duties both leading up to

I Love SEESA

(Confessions of a First Year Member)

In May 2011, I attended my first concert of the Melody singers. It was one of the nicest afternoons I had spent in a long time. I was hooked. I wanted to be one of those lucky people.

September finally arrived and I was there, money in hand to join and embark on a new and very wonderful journey. Then that long anticipated Tuesday arrived and there I was among all those SINGERS. Well, was I thrilled! Little did I know what a great experience this would be. The members are so friendly and welcoming and very soon I felt, “This is where I belong.”

As time went by I got to know the choir director, Anne Marshall, better. What an incredible woman she is! Anne is warm, patient, loving and extremely knowledgeable in so many areas. Belonging to the choir has turned out to be an awesome experience. Little did I know there would be more surprises.

I already knew Brenda Remin, who told me about the Accidental Drama Club. The drama club was getting ready to put on a Variety Show and I wanted to be a part of that, I had never been in a show like this. Everything was so new and exciting for me. What an incredible experience, so many new things to learn! I enjoyed interacting with more great folks ready to step out to have fun and entertain friends and guests.

I had so much fun. I was given opportunity to learn from another smart, experienced woman. Brenda was great, directing us through rehearsals and meetings and many trials that must have been very frustrating for her. Brenda did this with patience and grace.

I have enjoyed my time at SEESA very much and I’ve met so many talented and friendly folks. I would love to mention all of them but don’t want to miss anyone. I look forward to being a member for many years to come and participating in other programs that are offered. I’m grateful to be part of such a warm and friendly corner of the world. Vivian Lundgren

SEESA SOCIAL GROUP

(Cards, Crafts and Social)

Starting on September 12, 2012 there will be a Social Group Program; 7:00 - 9:00pm every 2nd and 4th Wednes-day of the month till May 2013. This program is for everyone, whether you would like to do a craft, play cards, board games, or just socialize with goodies and coffee or tea. I’ve Noticed...

Dolores Cadrin has donated some Canna Lily plants for our garden. Thank you very much. We look forward to their blooming this summer.

On March 23, 24 and 25 the cast and crew of the Accidental Drama Club were behind the scenes quickly changing costumes and props to be ready for the next act of the variety show. We don't keep open glasses/cups of water around in case of spills on our costumes and I had forgotten my water bottle, but like magic, several bottles of water became available in the Holyrood Room for those of us who had developed a mighty thirst. Thank you, who-ever you are, for that considerate gesture.

High Tea Event

On Friday May 11,2012 fifty-four people attended our High Tea. This was prepared by Bev our cook and nineteen volunteers.

The entertainment was by Edgar Gualoto, who played his flute at long intervals, between 2 and 4 pm. He brought

crafts for sale. These were made by his wife and the co-op in Ecuador.

Fire Hazard Awareness

Being aware of the potential fire hazards in your home is a crucial step in the prevention of fires. Fires in the home account for the majority of fire deaths and injuries. Knowing what to look for can protect you and your loved ones from the devastation of fire. Here are some simple steps you can follow to keep your home and family safe:

Unplug appliances when not in use, especially appliances that produce heat like kettles, irons and toasters.

Never use extension cords as a replacement for permanent wiring. Only plug in what you have outlet space for. Never run extension cords under rugs or next to a heat source.

Keep the area around your stove clear and clean.

Never leave candles unattended. Keep matches and lighters out of the reach

of children. Keep exits and stairwells clear of clutter.

Combustible items can prevent escape during a fire or can be a tripping hazard.

Prevent lint buildup in and around your clothes dryer. Clean behind the dryer at least once a year and ensure the exhaust hose is connected.

Never store flammable chemicals or combustible items near your furnace, hot water heater or any source of open flame. Keep combustibles at least 1 metre (3 feet) away and store chemicals in a ventilated garage or shed.

NEVER store propane inside a building. It is safe to keep propane bottles outside or on your balcony.

Keep combustibles at least 1 metre (3 feet) away from space heaters, fireplaces and other heat sources. Ensure wood burning fireplaces have a proper screen to prevent sparks from escaping.

I would like to send a big “THANK YOU” to all the volunteers who took the time out of their busy day to work the SEESA

Casino, April 24 and 25th. I especially would like to thank Betty Wilson for all her assistance in the General Manager’s position. We enjoyed working with each and every one of the volunteers. If it were not for the volunteers we could not have run a very successful casino. ABS Casino gave us a $25.00 gift certificate and we put all the volunteer worker names in a hat. Melody Singers’ Notes

On April 4th the choir sang at Jubilee Nursing Home. Our MC for the afternoon was Tom McGovern. Harold Ulmer and Janette Witt sang “I Don’t Know About Tomorrow” during the first break and during the second break Ellen Howrish entertained us with a reading on Pet Therapy. On April 12th we sang at Shepherds Care in Millwoods and our MC was Dee Turner. Celia Bartzen read poetry to us during the first break. One piece, “April in Alberta,” was written by one of our own members, Mieke Alexander. We heard T.S. Elliot’s “Gumby” and Edward Lear’s “The Owl and the Pussy Cat.” Also “Jubilee,” which was written by a 10-year old boy. During the second break we had a trio - Anne Marshall, Brenda Remin and Dee Turner- and they sang “My Favourite Things” and “God’s Choir.” This was our last Sing-Out for this Spring and thank you again to all our soloists who add such depth to our performances.

The singers attended a Choral Festival at Pleas-antview United Church on April 26th. There were sev-eral choirs there and we sang songs from our reper-toire for each other after practicing some ‘canon’ (round singing) - “Viva la Musica” (Michael Praetorius 1571-1621), “Let us Sing Together” (Anon.), “All Things Shall Perish” (German Traditional), “Shalom” (Hebrew Folksong). We sang our Calypso medley for the other choirs – “Yellow Bird” (Music by Norman Luboff, Lyrics by Marilyn Keith and Alan Bergman.) “Water Come a Me Eye” (Jamaican Folk Tune) and “Jamaica Farewell” (Lyrics and Music by Irving Burgie). After the singing we listened to the Bell Ringers in the basement of the church. It was an awesome performance. They must be one of the best groups in the city. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. May 6th was the Spring Concert and forty some people managed to fit onto the stage. It is very encouraging having a built-in audience! It seemed to go down well and, in fact, we had a standing ovation! The soloists were excellent as usual. We did the Calypso medley again. It is now almost perfect!!!!!!!!!! See you all in the Fall.

Fundraising Report Wow! We had 86

people come to our Spaghetti & Jam Dinner. There was $140 in donations, the 50/50 realized $119 and overall the event brought in

$1056 towards the new microphones. Besides that, what a good time we had!

Mary Chesney won the 50/50 at the April dinner and donated winnings back to the centre. Talk about member dedication! Much appreciated. As always, the Rummage Sale was a great success netting over $9,000. Thanks to the unending commitment of the volunteers. A lot of hours go in to this event. Also, thanks to all
