President’s Message

The Providence Board of Trustees and administrative staff continually oversee not only the school’s present needs but also anticipate its future needs. To that end, the Master Plan was developed. This plan foresaw campus needs, including changes to the athletic fields, renovation of the gymnasiums; construction

of a field house for the football and baseball complexes; addition of tennis courts; adding an exterior chapel; and the renovation of the cafeteria kitchen to replace the 1950s-era equipment.

Keeping our tuition as low as possible is our first and foremost goal, even as we seek to implement campus improvements. To meet that goal, we determined the need to increase our endowment fund to provide additional income to be used for that purpose. To accomplish all these components in our strategic plan, a $4 million five-year campaign was designed and with the approval of the archdiocese, fundraising began with existing donors in what is known as the “silent phase.”

I am pleased to report that the “Endowing the Future” campaign has already achieved $3.6 million in pledges, and funds received have allowed some of those projects to be completed in advance of the public campaign announcement.

Key to the renovations on campus was the installation of the new turf field in Murphy Stadium, accomplished last summer. Because we are bound on all sides by residential properties, we must find ways to multi-use our spaces. We determined that moving the soccer field from the baseball outfield and creating a shared playing surface with football on a turf surface was the best solution. The new turf football/soccer field allowed other plans to develop.

New restroom facilities for the football/soccer and baseball fields

are badly needed, so a field house was designed to be placed at the entrance to Murphy Stadium and the baseball field. To make space for this new facility, the baseball field must move over, so ground was broken on this project in early August. The new field house will feature restrooms for the stadium and baseball fields, concessions, ticket windows and press boxes. Unfinished space in this building will later be used to house visitor locker rooms.

Donations and pledges in the silent phase also allowed for other projects to begin, including the renovation of the gymnasiums with much-needed new bleachers and repainted floor, made possible due to to the generosity of Bill (Hon. ’15) and Juanita Beach. The building of the tennis courts in the front field and the chapel at the student entrance were the next projects. With the chapel moving to the front parking lot, space will be freed to allow the 1951-era cafeteria and kitchen to move into the multi-use space that is currently the Activity Center.

Our endowment fund also is an important part of this capital campaign. We have added $424,100 to our endowment fund, with $110,000 more in future pledges to the campaign. The total endowment fund now exceeds $1million, one-third of the way toward our $3 million goal. Our individual class funds continue to grow, and competition between classes to raise the largest amount continues to build momentum.

Over the 64 years of Providence’s existence, our alumni and supporters have donated their talent, time and treasure to provide improvements to the school. Tuition dollars are used for operational expenses. They do not stretch to pay for improvements. We are so very grateful to all those who give back so others can enjoy a Providence education.

If you would like to know more about the changes to campus and the needs of the campaign, contact Vice President of Advancement Tony Perito at (812) 945-3500 or [email protected]

Endowing the Future of Providence

Bill (Hon. ’14) and Juanita Beach were the primary donors for the updates in the gymnasiums. Their generosity allowed for the replacement of worn out, retractable, wooden bleachers. Previously, the Beaches donated funds for the air conditioning of the school, spurred by their desire to support air conditioning in the Larkin Center when their granddaughters, Jessica (Batliner) Neumann ’05 and Megan (Batliner) Cahill ’03, played volleyball here.

Bill Beach (Hon. ’14) was a member of the first freshman class at Providence but transferred to New Albany his junior year to enroll in vocational classes. In 1972, he founded Beach Mold & Tool in New Albany. He and his wife, Juanita, have two daughters, Cheryl (Beach) Korb ’79 and Vickie (Beach) Batliner ’81, and four grandchildren, Megan (Batliner) Cahill ’03, Jessica (Batliner) Neumann ’05, Nathaniel Korb ’04 and Dustin Korb ’11, who are Providence graduates.

Adding a synthetic turf surface and creating a combined football/soccer field was an important first step in the completion of the Master Plan. The new field spurred the creation of a refreshed athletic logo, featuring a Pioneer looking to the future and a unique font. The field was blessed by St. Mary of the Knobs pastor and former PHS chaplain Fr. Mike Hilderbrand. Boys Soccer won the first game on the field with a 7-0 defeat of Corydon Central High School, and Football then beat New Albany 15-14.

Endowing the Future of Providence

The Kirchdorfer family is the primary donor for the chapel project, which will be named in memory of the late Jim Kirchdorfer, husband of Carolyn (Galligan) Kirchdorfer ’60. While Jim Kirchdorfer did not attend Providence, he shared his wife’s love of the school, especially since their daughter, Teresa (Kirchdorfer) Gardone ’85, is an alumna. Carolyn Kirchdorfer’s sons issued a challenge grant to fund the remaining amount of the project, and alumni from the Classes of 1955 through 1965 have responded generously.

Funded primarily through donations from MAC Construction, The Unruh Family Foundation and the Jeff Schmidt ’81 Memorial Fund, the baseball field project will allow for the building of a field house next summer to replace the original Murphy Stadium restrooms and concession stand as well as provide a combined entrance for the football/soccer stadium and the baseball complex. Vic ’72 and Jeannie (Schmidt) Unruh ’72, founders of MAC Construction, their children, Travis Unruh ’95, Chad Unruh ’97 and Maria Unruh ’02 Wheatley, and Jeannie’s parents, Jim and Janet (Banet ex-’55) Schmidt, used various sources to fund the project, which will include dugouts named in memory of the late Jeff Schmidt, Jeannie’s brother.

Todd Popson ’88 is a volunteer Boys Tennis assistant coach and coach of the Deanery tennis team as well as a parent of tennis players senior Ben Popson and sophomore Heidi Popson. A few years ago, Popson and other parents brought concerns about conditions at the tennis teams’ home courts at Sam Peden Community Park in New Albany. At that time, the tennis courts were a future project that had not been funded. Popson rallied tennis parents and alumni to raise the funds needed to speed up the project. The courts were under construction at the end of the fiscal year but scheduled to be completed in September.

Endowing the Future of Providence

As anyone who has attended a football, soccer or baseball game at Providence can attest, the complexes are in sore need of new restrooms and more modern facilities. Fundraising for this project has just begun, and the goal is to have the funds pledged or raised by next summer so the new stadium/baseball field entrance is ready for the 2016 fall sports season.

The school kitchen remains in its original configuration, with an exterior walk-in refrigerator and freezer added at some time in the past. Some equipment has been updated, but the space is small for a staff that feeds about 600 people a day. Relocation of the cafeteria to the multi-use space known as the Activity Center and of the kitchen to the former chapel will provide a better working environment and modern equipment for the cafeteria staff. It will also provide restrooms in the cafeteria for the students, who now have to use restrooms in the Main Lobby during lunch.

The aging home-side bleachers in Murphy Stadium are in need of being replaced. They were originally built out of scrap metal in 1966 and have held many excited fans over the years. New bleachers would improve fans’ access to seating. This project would begin after the field house is complete.

Endowing the Future of Providence

Alan Mathews ’88 is a 10-year Spanish teacher at Providence and is proud of his alma mater. But he wasn’t proud when he saw the Class of 1988 missing from the list of classes that had contributed to the Class Endowment Fund. He approached Tony Perito, vice president of advancement, and asked how to get his class on the list.

Perito worked with Mathews to write a letter to his classmates, and Mathews added his own touch – he included a copy of his check donation on the letter. Over the next few weeks, donations began arriving. Now,

the balance is at $2,650. Not quite at the permanent endowment level of $5,000, but a respectable halfway.

The Class Endowment for the Class of 1988 also benefited from a challenge from an anonymous donor who matches the first $500 donated to a Class Endowment Fund, as have several other classes. Some also benefited from that anonymous donor’s adding $500 for classes that reach the $4,500 level.

Alumni like Mathews and his classmates are important to the future of Providence.

The Providence strategic plan has a goal of reaching $3 million in its endowment fund in order to help keep tuition costs low. As more classes like the Class of 1988 are contributing to the endowment, they have helped push the total over the $1 million mark in the last couple of years, putting the endowment at one-third of its goal.

If you would like to organize a donation drive among your classmates, contact Tony Perito at (812) 945-3350 or [email protected].
