Dear GME, GSA, GSA-MAS, OSR, WAAHP, or WLO Member:
A representative from your organization has beendiligently planning and organizing to ensure that this year'sWestern Regional Conference of the AAMC will again be aninformative and productive experience. We are writing tooutline the program and provide you with information onregistration and housing.
PROGRAM
The program, outlined in the enclosed attachment, isdesigned to provide pragmatic approaches to the manychallenges that face us. The theme of the meeting is"Solutions at the Interface." We will focus on the transitionfrom pre-medical to medical school and on the transition frommedical school to residency. Among the topics in the firstinterface are the changing applicant pool and other admissionsissues. The interface between medical school and residency isbecoming a compelling issue as the emphasis on careeradvising, Dean's letters and residency pressures combine tochallenge us in providing the best advice possible to ourstudents.
To orient us to this array of issues, the keynote speakerwill be Dr. Gus Swanson. Dr. Swanson has been the Director ofAcademic Affairs of the AAMC for sixteen years and is the oneindividual best suited to update us on the most recent data onthe changing applicant pool and the results of his specialplenary session on the problems around the residency matchprocess. While Dr. Swanson will update us on the problems, the program will focus on the variety of solutions or partialsolutions that can be found among the schools in the region.
We believe you will find the program provocative andstimulating. To carry on with the Asilomar tradition of agroup activity on Monday night, we are planning to mix it upwith an hour of square dancing (Bring your square dancing duds!), followed by disco dancing. All in all we are planninga memorable and worthwhile four days for you.

Again this year the Western GSA group will subsidize aportion of the expenses for one additional OSR representativefrom each medical school. By defraying the expenses of foodand lodging, this support is intended to increase theattendance of minority students. Student affairs deans ateach medical school should forward the name of the student who.is to receive this support to Dr. John Yergan at the addresslisted below.
ARRANGEMENTS
Enclosed is a Housing Preference/Registration Form. Please forward the completed form to the Conference Registrar,Ms. Lyn Logan Buchanan, with a postmark no later than February23, 1987, in order to avoid a $15 late fee. The registrationfee should be submitted with the Housing/Registration Form.
When housing has been assigned, a written confirmationwill be sent to you along with a bill for the appropriatehousing fee. Housing fees, which include all meals, must besubmitted no later than March 27, 1987, in order to hold thehousing assignment. Because single rooms are not availableand we do not have as many doubles as we would like, wesuggest that if you have roommate preferences you state themon the form. You will have at least one roommate.Cancellations of registration and housing may be made inwriting or by telephone and will be accepted by the ConferenceRegistrar through March 27, 1987.
Please do not fail to make your reservation now and joinus for an exciting conference. Attendance is by invitationonly and we reserve the right to limit registration. If youhave any input concerning the conference, please contact oneof the members of the Program Committee listed on the back ofthe program.
We look forward to seeing you at Asilomar!

Dear Fellow Student Affairs Dean,
OFFICE OF THE DEAN
Members of our group have requested that we hold ano-agenda fireside session during the Asilomar meeting. The purpose of the session will be to facilitateinformal discussions on issues of interest amongmembers of our group.
I will be scheduling a meeting room for 4:00 -6:00PM on Sunday, April 26, 1987. Several members ofour group advised me that the Sunday afternoon timewould be a good one since other activities would not beunderway, and because it would leave time foradditional informal discussion as the conferenceproceeds. It should be a good way for us to getstarted. I encourage you to arrange your travel plansso that you can begin the meeting by joining yourcolleagues Sunday afternoon. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jotln Yergan, M.D.Assistant Dean, Student Affairs
