Ingredients:2 cups sugar3 cups flour1 tsp baking powder1 tsp baking soda1 tsp cinnamon*1 tsp ground cloves1 tsp nutmeg1 cup butter, softened4 eggs1 cup whole milk

Recipe: Spice Cake

December is always full of activities, including opportunities to volunteer your time and resources. Generate a spirit of generosity by recruiting your friends and family to volunteer and donate with you.

To volunteer effectively, find out which organizations in your area are inviting the community to volunteer during holiday events. Here are some ideas to get you started:

• Serving meals at a homeless shelter

• Visiting a nearby hospital or nursing home to help staff members carry out their daily tasks during this busy time of year

• Helping community centers and places of worship distribute clothes and other necessities to your city’s residents in need

To make sure your donations will be put to the best use, it’s always a good idea to ask the organizations receiving your donations what they need most. Also, be on the lookout for local businesses that serve as a donation collection site for charities. Here are some donation ideas to get you started:

• Non-perishable food items

• New or gently-used clothing. Remember to donate only new socks and undergarments that are still in the packages

• Around the holidays, donations of children’s toys are usually appropriate

Once you have a plan for donating, make an afternoon of purchasing or gathering items and delivering them to the collection sites. Alternatively, if you are busier than usual this December, consider making a monetary donation to the organization of your choice. Many organizations will graciously accept this kind of support. Every little bit helps.

Instructions:Cream the sugar and butter. Add the eggs and beat for two minutes. Sift together the dry ingredients and add to the egg mixture, alternating with the whole milk. Beat for two minutes. Pour the batter into a greased and floured bundt pan and bake at 350°F (176°C) for 45 minutes. *Fun Fact: Cinnamon is known to lower blood sugar levels.

Trivia: From the West

December is a busy month, with activities ranging from snuggling in front of the fireplace, shopping, traveling, attending festivities, volunteering, and feasting. It’s important to stay active, but many of us struggle to keep up our fitness routines amid the mayhem. Here are some tips to help you plan around your travels and social obligations:

• Take advantage of hundreds of online (and FREE!) fitness videos. All you have to do is set up YouTube, clear some floor space, and you’re good to go.

• Turn a few household items and your own body weight into gym equipment. Strengthen arms by using full milk jugs as free weights. Do pushups and jumping jacks to raise your heartrate. Try calf raises on a nearby staircase.

• Keep up your strength training even while traveling by investing in a set of resistance bands. Many sets are under $25 and can fit inside your carry-on luggage.

• Use a smartphone app to map a safe walking/jogging route from anywhere you’re traveling. No smartphone? No problem. Just ask your hosts to draw a map of nearby pedestrian-friendly streets.

Staying Fit in December

1. The musical West Side Story was based on which Shakespearean play?

2. Whose presidential library is located in West Branch, Iowa?

3. Adam West starred as Batman on the campy 1960s TV series Batman. Who played his sidekick, Robin?

4. Which literary character owned a mansion in West Egg, New York?

5. Kanye West interrupted what singer during her acceptance speech for Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards?

Think you know the answers? Email your answers, with “Trivia: From the West” in the subject line, to [email protected] for your chance to win cool stuff!

Five Trivia winners will be selected each month. Be sure to include your full name and phone number in your email submission so we may contact you with prize information if you are selected. Deadline for entry is December 31, 2016,

and winners will be notified by January 15, 2017. Good luck!
