ABOUT NPTI
National Power Training Institute (NPTI) an ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 organization under Ministry of
Power, Govt. of India, is a National Apex body for Training and HRD in Power Sector with its Corporate
Office at Faridabad. NPTI is the world’s leading integrated power training institute and it is operating on
an all India basis through its regionally located Institutes at Faridabad, Badarpur, Nangal, Bengaluru,
Neyveli, Durgapur, Guwahati and Nagpur. NPTI is established two new institutes at Alappuzha (Kerala)
and Shivpuri (MP). NPTI has more than 50 years of professional expertise in the field of training and
HRD in Power sector with industry specific interface. Supply of Power without interruption to the
consumer, Transmission Lines and Switch Yards must be Maintained without taking outage. Hence the
need of well trained Personnel to undertake Maintenance on Live Transmission Lines and Switch Yards.
ABOUT NPTI-HLTC-BENGALURU
Hot Line Training Centre (HLTC) located at Bangalore, is the oldest Institute under National Power
Training Institute (NPTI). It is the only one of its kind in South Asia. Established in 1958, training at
HLTC enables trained personnel to attend to maintenance works on Transmission Lines and Switch
Yards without power interruption. Since its inception HLTC had trained more than 6000 personnel
including participants from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in the field of Live Line Maintenance
Techniques.
HLTC imparts training on Live Line Maintenance of EHV Lines & Switch Yards, Punctured Insulator
Detection, Live Line Insulator Washing etc. All the Power utilities of India and abroad can make use of
these training facilities.
HLTC is located in Bangalore near Somanahalli Gate at 26th KM on Bangalore- Kanakapura Road in
about 57-acre campus with office building, Tools Hanger, Training Yard consisting of Transmission
Lines from 11kV to 400kV and 220kV Switch Yard, hostel, Guest house, Canteen and Residential
Colony.
Scope of Training
Live Line Maintenance Technique (LLMT) using Hot Stick Method (HSM) up to 132 kV was extended
up to 220kV in the Year 1974. Bare Hand Method (BHM) of training on 400 kV was introduced in the
Year 1997.

manufacturing unit and testing facility for Insulators, Towers, and Cables are also arranged.

utilities, Power Companies / Corporations, and Private Electrical Contractors from India and abroad.

Training Courses
Introduction: -
Learning the Hot Stick Method of training is a basic necessity to execute works on Live
Transmission Lines & Switchyard. The course covers the overall features of Hot Line
Techniques including awareness about Hot Line Washing, Insulator testing, Switchyard
Maintenance, etc. It is intended to enhance the competence level of the participants to handle the
maintenance on both transmission lines and Switchyards using Live Line Maintenance Method.
The training programme offers direct benefit to the organizations involved in maintenance of
transmission lines/ Switchyards by reducing the number and duration of shutdowns as well.
Objective:
The Training Programme has been organized with the following objectives:
To Provide in-depth approach and technical know-how in live line maintenance
To highlight the importance of maintenance of HV and EHV Power Transmission
lines using Hot Stick Method.
To give an introduction to Bare Hand Method of Live Line Maintenance
Programme Profile:
General Principles of LLMT.
Introduction to maintenance of Power lines using Hot Stick Method.
Practical oriented Operation covering various tower configurations.

Hands on training on commercial lines of various configurations up to 220 kv.
Field testing of insulators - use of analogue and digital methods, demo on the use of
Punctured Insulator Detector (PID) test kit.
Introduction to maintenance using Bare Hand Method of Live Line Maintenance and
switchyard maintenance using LLMT.

& Lodging Charges: Rs 1,86,000/- + GST.Rs 30,708/- =Rs 2,16,708/- per participant (Rupees
Two Lakhs Sixteen Thousand Seven Hundred And Eight Only).

trained in Live Line Maintenance Techniques using Hot Stick Method.
Course Fee: The course is fully residential. Course fee for 5 Weeks with Boarding & Lodging
Charges: Rs.1,45,000/- + GST Rs. 24,840/- = Rs 1,69,840/- Per participant (Rupees One Lakh
Sixty Nine Thousand Eight Hundred And Forty Only)

exploit the full potential of LLMT and it can increase the scope of Maintenance activities.

Appreciation on maintenance of switchyard equipments.
To highlight the importance of Live Line Maintenance Technology in EHV switchyard.
Give an introduction to Live Line washing techniques of EHV Substation Insulators.
Programme Profile:
Electrical Safety & Safe clearances.
General practice of switchyard maintenance
Practice on climbing towers and switchyard structures, precaution at different working positions
Use of different hardware used in the maintenance works (Ropes, earthing equipment, load
handling equipments, etc.)
Hands on demo/training on live switchyard using Hot Stick Method (HSM) and Bare Hand
Methods (BHM).
Use of Thermo vision Camera for detection of hot spots in maintenance works.
Introduction to live line washing of insulators, video films on LLMT.
Duration: 4 Weeks

amongst executives involved in EHV Line Maintenance in general and intended to highlight the
scope of LLMT and its potential extension to EHV switchyards in particular.

The course is meant exclusively for the personnel working on cold lines from different power
utilities. spreading awareness about Line Maintenance Techniques on un-charged lines amongst
Supervisors and Technicians involved in Line Maintenance. The Training Program has been
organized with the objectives of giving appreciation about EHV Lines, highlight importance of
maintenance and give a brief introduction to Live Line Maintenance Techniques
Programme Profile:

Rs. 87,000/- + GST Rs. 14,652/- = Rs. 1,01,652/- Per participant (Rupees One Lakh One

Objective:
The course is meant for training on Testing of Insulator String of Suspension, Tension and ‘V’ String
configuration on Live Condition of EHV Transmission Lines. This course covers
1. Testing of Live Insulator string using software based Positron PID kit
2. Downloading of stored result from Memory of kit to PC.
3. Analysis of results (Graphical & Analytical Method).
4. Preparing Test Report.

Objective:
The course is meant for Training on Insulator Maintenance Techniques on cold / charged systems
amongst Supervisors and Technicians involved in EHV Line / Switchyard Maintenance. The
Training Program covers appreciation about Pollution on insulators of EHV systems, equipment,
etc., and to highlight the importance of care & maintenance on various types of insulators.
Types and effect of Pollution on performance, its prevention and solutions.
Safety aspects in Live / Hot Line Washing.
Hot Line Washing Equipment set up and it’s operating procedures.
Safety aspects in Hot Line Washing of line and substation Insulators.
Care and methods of Washing on sub station equipment like Circuit Breakers, Current
Transformers and Potential Transformers, etc.
Practice of Hot Line Washing on Live Lines at Tension Point, Suspension Point Post
Insulators; etc.
Introduction to Dry Washing and Hot Spray Systems.
7. LIVE LINE INSULATOR WASHING TECHNIQUES (ON EHV SWITCHYARD/LINES)

Who may attend: It is preferred that only those who had worked in the relevant field and
associated with some of the EHV line maintenance activities quite some time, say, 2 to 3 years, after
completing their entry level (induction level) training course on cold lines may only be sponsored so
that many of the techniques need not have to be repeated. It is preferred that the participants of this
course should have been exposed to some of the Live Line Maintenance jobs at least a couple of
years before they are sponsored for this training. This will enable the trainer to ease his efforts by
simply recalling those techniques and concentrate more on the techniques relevant to actual live line
situation that are needed.
Supervisors in the rank of Junior Engineer and ITI qualified Technicians may be considered for
this course.
Course Fee: The course is on site (non- residential). Course fee for 1 week is Rs.24, 000/- + GST
Rs. 4320/- = Rs. 28,320/- Per participant (Rupees Twenty Eight Thousand Three
Hundred and Twenty Only)

8. PGDC IN TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION
26 weeks PGDC in Transmission and Distribution is planned to start at HLTC against the
Sl.No:4 & Sl.No:7( In place of 2 hsm courses).

The courses run by HLTC on Live Line Maintenance Techniques (LLMT) which are fully
practical oriented requiring physical fitness to climb & work on Towers/ Structures, require good
eye sight & hearing, free from height phobia & colour blindness, free from heart ailments &
arthritis, etc; except for the Capsule Course for Executives wherein only the LLMT demos are
shown. Though there is no age limit, it is advisable that the personnel deputed for LLMT Course
using Hot Stick Method (HSM), LLMT Course using Bare Hand Methods (BHM) and for
Switchyard Maintenance Techniques using LLMT for Lineman/Supervisors are well below 50
years of age. Participants with varying backgrounds from skilled technicians to Graduates and Post-
Graduates in Engineering and serving as Asst. Engineers, Junior Engineers, Supervisors / Foremen
holding Diploma certificate, Linemen, Asst. Linemen, etc; holding Trade Certificate (ITI holders)
from Private & Public sector power Utilities used to attend the LLMT courses where as
JE/AE/AEE/EE level participants associated with LLMT works can be nominated for the “one
week Capsule Course for Executives” to familiarize them.
The participants deputed for LLMT courses are required to execute an Indemnity Bond
on non-judicial stamp paper of not less than Rs.50/- before taking up training. The sponsoring
organization is advised to insure the trainees for the training period for an appropriate amount and
provide them with Safety Shoes & Goggles. The detailed brochure of the course is sent normally 2
to 3 months before commencement date of each course on receipt of which nominations can be sent
after contacting us. As we normally accommodate only about 20 trainees per session, only few
nominations covering each client are accepted on first come first served basis. If the nominations
exceed 20, a wait-listed panel may be drawn up for accommodating them in next course due in the
same year or next year. Hence it is absolutely essential that the nominations be sent with all
formalities completed at the earliest so as to reach us in time. The sponsoring authorities are
advised to obtain written confirmation from HLTC before sending the trainees to Bangalore for the
said training programmes.
Note: (1) NPTI is exempted from deduction of Income Tax at source under section No.10
(23C) (iiiab) of Income Tax Act 1961 vide letter No.ACIR/R-1/Fbd/03- 04/5001 dated 27.10.2003
and hence no deduction of tax at source be made from course fee.
HLTC reserves right to reject the incomplete nominations.
