Sport Participation In Games Sports and ages in Multisport Games (Researched by the Sport and Community Development Branch)
D demonstration sport o optional sports, generally host driven shaded boxes indicates restricted entry to Games ! included in Games with open age category
SPORT PARTICIPATION IN GAMES The following tables are designed to be a quick reference guide for sport involvement in various multi-sport Games that BC athletes participate. Our aims in engaging in this research was to identify the major Games and their sports, particularly in relation to age classifications of participants. We feel this has a significant bearing on the systematic development of athletes from introduction to high performance. The finished document provides an interesting overview of this segment of the sport system and we hope that you will find it useful. Please note that this chart is as of July, 2000, as ages and sports change over time. Please refer to multi-sport games websites for official technical packages for verification if needed. Please see the legend for explanation of symbols and terms used. Multi-Sport Games included are: " BC Summer & Winter Games " Western Canada Summer Games " Canada Games " Universaide " Francophone Games " Commonwealth Games " Pan American Games " Goodwill Games " Olympic Games " North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) " Paralympic Games " Special Olympics
Some statistics which can be drawn from these tables include: " Olympic sports are represented in an average of 4.39 Games. " Summer Olympic sports are represented in an average of 4.85 Games. " Winter Olympic sports are represented in 3.37 Games. " 87 female sports are represented in Multi-Sport Games. " 89 male sports are represented in Multi-Sport Games. SPORT PARTICIPATION IN GAMES with AGES – TABLE LEGEND
D demonstration sport o optional sports, generally host driven shaded boxes indicates restricted entry to Games ! included in Games with open age category
✰ = NAIG Sports include the following age categories
Bantam 13 – 14 Midget 15 – 16 Juvenile 17 – 18 Junior 19 – 21 Senior 22 plus (individual sports plus basketball,
volleyball, fastball) Masters 33 plus (only in golf)
Canada Summer Games See below for explanation on the .2, .6, and .8 on age categories. Notes: #1 Sailing in the Canada Games the ‘byte’ class is U18.6. #2 Boxing athletes born in 1987 and are upgraded to intermediate by their
PSO by Dec. 31, 2002 are eligible. #3 Figure Skating – PreNovice Singles – U19.8; PreNovice Pairs – U21.8
(male), U19.8 (female); PreNovice Dance – U21.8 (male), U19.8 (female); Novice Singles – U 19.8; Novice Pairs – U21.8 (male), U19.8 (female); Novice Dance – U21.8 (male), U19.8 (female).
Age Categories: Ages in the technical packages tend to be based on various deadlines (ie. December 31, 2000, December 31, 2001, June 30, and others). In order to have a common baseline, we have calculated the ages based on the actual age the athlete could be at the Games (eg. if they must be 21 as of December 31, 2000, then at the Canada Summer Games 2001, they could be as old as 21.6 if they turned 21 on January 1, 2001). .6 is a conversion of 8/12. If it says U21.6 – 14.6, then the 14.6 represents the youngest age the athlete could possibly be at the time of the Games. Please always refer to the Technical package for verification of age classifications.
