Trumpet and French Horn by Maurice Faulkner Contributing Editor for the Brass Clinic, Maurice Faulk- ner also pro- vides readers with a look at international music in the column "Music on the Move." He received a Ph.D. degree from Stanford University and is professor emeritus of music education at the University of California, Santa Bar- bara. Music for trumpet and French horn has been in short supply this year, with some run-of-the- mill works repeating the type of material that has long been a part of the teaching and per- formance field. There are a few items, however, which offer new ideas and new opportunities for concert solos and these pieces deserve the attention of all of us who teach music for brass in- struments. Trumpet Solos Egil Smedvig has produced eight works for Bb trumpet and piano that range from grade 2 to 4 (Saga Music Press). Smedvig understands the trumpet and keeps the piano accompani- ments fairly simple so that stu- dent pianists can handle them. The music gives the youthful trumpeter an experi- ence in legato cantabile perform- ance skills, as well as in rapid tonguing style. Parisian publisher Alphonse Leduc has developed another music education series for ele- mentary players that has several levels: Preparatory 1 and 2, Ele- mentary 1 and 2. Gloria for Bo or C trumpet or cornet by Jacques Devogel is 2'/2 minutes long. Containing both By and C parts and a simple piano accompani- ment, the music provides lyrical training for students who need special development in legato tonguing. Grade 2. $2.15. Kendor Music continues to en- hance teaching materials for trumpet solos with piano. So- nata Francaise by Franklin De- long is a three-movement com- position with an imaginative trumpet part that has contempo- rary harmonies and melodic modulations. The piano accom- paniment requires a competent technician. Grade 4. $8. 8:15. Trumpet Duets Lennie Niehaus, one of my fa- vorite big band arrangers, has composed Ten Jazz Variations for two trumpets (Kendor). The music will teach the neophyte trumpeter the better swing styles. Properly accented and phrased in a professional man- ner, these 10 delights will give two "swingers" a basis for future advances in this idiom. Grades 3-4, $8. Trumpet Trios In Suite for Three Trumpets, David Uber takes advantage of the trumpet's ability to mimic church bells, which are used as an introductory motive to set the tone for the four movements (Kendor). Uber, one of the finest brass ensemble composers, has given us a pleasant piece for training students in accurate at- tacks and tone control. Grades 2-3. $6. Suite for Trumpets consists of three pieces by Frank Erickson published separately (Belwin- Mills). "Fanfare," "Pastorale," and "Finale" are all brief musical es- says in uncomplicated harmo- nies and melodies. Grade 2. $4 each. Concerto for C Trumpet andOrchestra by Hallvard Johnsencontains a piano reduction andthe score and orchestral partsare available on a rental basis(Norsk Musikforlag). Althoughthe publication is too expensive, its musical ideas produce an in-teresting interplay between thetrumpet and string textures.Grade 5. $20.75.

Sonata in D for C trumpet (oroboe), two violins, and bassocontinue by James Paisible (ed-ited by Peter Holman) is in thelate Italian Baroque style (Ox-ford). The music is five minutesin length and all parts are in-cluded. This selection will serveas an excellent addition to theCorelli and Vivaldi repertoire.Grades 4-5. $15.

Invocation for B v trumpet andwinds by Robert Starer is awork that was originally scoredfor trumpet and strings (RobertKing Music). Here, it has beenreworked so that the threeflutes, three Bt> clarinets, twotrombones, baritone, and tuba, create a sonorous interplay withthe brilliant trumpet quality. Ascore and parts are included andtwo copies of the woodwindparts have been provided so thata fine wind ensemble can usethis as a valuable concert work.Modern harmonies and contrast-ing woodwind and lower brasstone colors prove to be a subtlefoil for the solo instrument.Grade 5. $10.

Other Ensemble CombinationsAt the Round Earth's Imagined

Corners for soprano voice, Bt>trumpet, and organ is by Geof-frey Burgon (Chester Music). The trumpet part is primarily anobbligato, which is not very ac-tive during the soprano's solowith organ accompaniment. This selection, however, wouldenhance a singer's program withan unusual novelty. Trumpet, grade 4. $8.25.

Sonata for D Trumpet and Vi-oloncello by Yves Chardon is asuperb and challenging concertwork for professionals or ad-vanced conservatory students(Robert King Music). I suggestreviewing Crystal RecordsStereo Disc No. S369 to judge

Sonata da Chiesa by ArcangeloCorelli has been transcribed byGabrielle Wojcik for Bb trum-pet, F horn, and trombone(Kjos). Extending for 8'/2 min-utes, the music's four move-ments take advantage of the so-nority of the brass tone in anintelligent blending of the in-struments. Grades 3-4.

Trumpet Etudes and StudiesA New Approach to Altissimo

Trumpet Playing by John H.Lynch is an intelligent analysisof the acoustical and physicalfactors necessary for producingdouble high Cs (Barnhouse).Lynch, a professional trum-peter, teacher, consulting en-gineer, and N.A.S.A. researchscientist, carefully explains hisreasoning for the method he ad-vocates in this new approach toaltissimo playing. periment with the ideas on theirown instruments, and examinethe results. Many old ideas con-flict with some of Lynch's con-cepts, but those old ideas havenot necessarily produced suc-cess in the altissimo register.Such basic attitudes about cer-tain techniques, for example, mouthpiece placement on thelips, pedal tone exercises, trum-pet angle against the lips, mouthpieces, and others mayneed to be reconsidered in lightof the valuable information inthis manual. $9.95.

Methode de Trompette el Cor-net by Guy Aptel is in French,English, and German (EditionDelrieu, Galaxy Music). The vol-ume offers exercises for the stu-dent that are a part of manyother study books. This onebegins with the most elementarymaterials and leads to some ad-vancement. It is too expensivefor the limited materials. $17.50.French Horn Solos

Sonata No. 2, "Finnish" for SoloHorn by Vitali Bujanovski con-tains four movements of charac-teristic horn idioms (MusiikkiFazer, Magnamusic-Baton). Themusic requires a wide range, considerable lip flexibility andfinger dexterity. Taken as awhole, it may not be the mostmusical of such pieces, but itcertainly challenges the hornist.Grade 4. $13.25.

Horn Concerto in Et>, K.370bby Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ishere reconstructed by JamesCollorati and includes a pianopart, the horn solo part, and thefragment score (Shawnee Press). The orchestral score and partsare available on rental. Afterconsiderable research, scholarshave found pages of this concer-to in various European loca-tions. The first movement, "Al-legro," was apparently sketchedby Mozart in Vienna around1781. There is no second move-ment, but the last movement isthe well-known "Concert Rondo,"K.V.371. Collorati's labor of loveshould serve solo hornists ofevery major symphony orches-tra as an additional opportu-nity to spice the concert seasonwith an unknown Mozart work.Grades 4-5. $15.
