The Freemasons’ Grand Charity is a grant-making charity that supports:

• Freemasons,andtheirdependants,whoareinfinancialneed

• NationalcharitiesservingEnglandandWales

•Worldwideemergencyreliefwork•OtherMasoniccharities

TheGrandCharityisfundedbyFreemasonsandtheirfamilies,mainlythroughfundraisingfestivalsheldeachyearinoneoftheProvinceswithinEnglandandWales,donations,legaciesandannualcontributions(viaLodges).

TheFreemasons’GrandCharityiscontinuingacommitmenttocharitablesupportthatbegannearly300yearsagointheearliestdaysoforganisedFreemasonry.

TheFreemasons’GrandCharityisjustonepartoftheoverallMasoniccharitableframework.ItsworksitsalongsidemanygenerousdonationsmadebyotherMasoniccharities,individualMasons,LodgesandProvincialGrandLodgesandassuchthegrantsitgivesareonlyafractionofthetotalamountdonatedtocharitybytheMasoniccommunity.

About Us

Welcome to the 2009 Review of The Freemasons’ Grand CharityAllcharitiesfacedachallengingyearin2009.Althoughthefullextentoftheeconomiccrisisisstillemerging,TheFreemasons’GrandCharityhasalreadyseenevidenceofthedevastatingimpactoftheworstrecessionforsixtyyears.IntheseverydifficultcircumstancesitremainsnoteworthythatnoFreemasonorhisdependantwhomeetsourfinancialeligibilityrequirements,hasbeenturnedaway.

Astherealitiesoftheeconomicclimatebegantotakeeffectonpeople,manycharitiesfoundthemselvesexperiencingfallingdonations,fundraisingchallengesandotherfinancialproblems.Inthesecircumstances,TheFreemasons’GrandCharity’sgrantswereavitalsourceofsupportforhospices,airambulancesandothernon-Masoniccharitiesandtheyhavebeengratefullyreceived.

CAN We Help yOU?Applicantsinreceiptofmeans-testedsupportfromthestate(forexample,pensioncredit)arelikelytoqualifyforassistancefromTheFreemasons’GrandCharity.LodgesandProvincialGrandLodgeshelpindividualstomaketheappropriateapplication.AnyindividualwhofeelstheymaybeeligibleshouldcontacttheLodgeAlmoner,theProvincialGrandAlmonerorTheFreemasons’GrandCharityofficeforfurtherassistance.Onreceipt,applicationsareassessedagainstguidelinesthattakeintoaccounttheincome,expenditureandsavingsoftheapplicant.Everycaseisconsideredonmerit.The Freemasons’ Grand Charity is committed to supporting Masons and their dependants who are in genuine need of help. Financial grants:Grantsrangedfrom£100to£4,500dependingonthecircumstancesoftheindividual.In20091,685peoplewereassistedwithover£3.1millionintotal.

Grantsareawardedtohelpwithdailylivingcostsandunexpectedbills.Forexample,funeralcosts,roofrepairsandothersimilarneeds.Grantsarealsomadeforhomeadaptationsduetohealthcarerequirements.

Mobility equipment:Atotalof£339,044wasgivenformobilityequipmentfor248peoplein2009.

TheFreemasons’GrandCharity,workinginpartnershipwithHomecraft,meetsthecostsassociatedwiththepurchase,maintenanceandinsuranceofthemobilityaids,whichremainthepropertyofthecharity.

TRANSFeRRed BeNeFICIARIeS FUNdSince2002TheFreemasons’GrandCharityhasmanagedtheTransferredBeneficiariesFund,whichmakesquarterlypaymentstoformerbeneficiariesoftheRoyalMasonicBenevolentInstitutionAnnuityFund.AlthoughtheFundisnowclosedtonewapplicants,itcontinuestohelpaconsiderablenumberofpeoplewithsmallfinancialgrants.Attheendof2009,therewere709activebeneficiariesandin2008/2009paymentsfromtheFundtotalled£743,927.50.

Working with provinces

RelIeF CHeSTTheReliefChestSchemeexiststoenableMasonicorganisationstomanagetheircharitabledonationsmoreefficiently.ItdoesthisthroughthecentraladministrationofcharitablefundsdonatedbyindividualLodges,ChaptersandotherMasonicbodies.

In2009theReliefChestSchemehelpedtodonatemorethan£8milliontocharitablecauses.Thereareover4,000ChestHoldersandthisnumberissteadilygrowingallthetime.Everymontharound325charitiesandindividualsbenefitfrompaymentsmadethroughaReliefChest,ontheinstructionsoftheChestHolder.

TheReliefChestteamhashelpedtoreclaimover£750,000inGiftAidin2009,everypennyofwhichtheChestHolderscanusetosupportthecharitiesandpeopletheycareabout.

TheReliefChestSchemeisprovidedfreeofchargebyTheFreemasons’GrandCharity,availabletoallrecognisedMasonicorganisationsthroughoutEnglandandWales.

mATCHed FUNdINGSince2005,TheFreemasons’GrandCharityhasbeenpilotingaschemethroughwhichselectedProvincesareinvitedtonominatecharitiestowhichtheyhavemadedonations.ThesedonationsarethenmatchedbyTheGrandCharity,uptoatotalof£5,000perProvince.TwelveProvincesparticipatedinthe2009cycle,whichmeantthat£58,900waspresentedtotheirnominatedcharities.

HOSpICeSSince1984,TheFreemasons’GrandCharityhasannuallysupportedthesevitalservices.In2009afurther£500,000wasdistributedamongst225hospiceservices,takingthetotalofsupporttoover£8million.ThisyearTheGrandCharityalsogave£150,000toLifelites,acharitywhichprovideseducationalandrecreationalequipmentforchildreninhospices.

AIR AmBUlANCeSTodate,morethan£500,000hasbeendonatedtowhatisconsideredthebusiestvoluntaryemergencyserviceinthecountry.EachairambulancefacilityinEnglandandWaleshas,atsomepoint,receivedfunding.In2009eachProvincialGrandLodgewasgiven£4,000tofundanairambulanceorsimilarrescueserviceinitsregion,withatotalof£192,000distributed.

mOORFIeldS eye HOSpITAl£250,000 over 3 yearsGlaucomaisanirreversible,progressivediseasecausedbyabuildupofpressureintheeye,andaleadingcauseofblindness.Whenthediseaseissevere,surgerycanslowitsprogressionbutinevitablycausesscarring,whichcanfurtherincreasepressureintheeye.Thisgrantisfundingresearchintothedevelopmentofnewanti-scarringtherapiesthatwillpotentiallyimproveoutcomesforpatientsworldwide.

CANCeR ReSeARCH UK£75,000PancreaticcanceristhefifthmostcommoncauseofcancerdeathintheUK.ProfessorJohnNeoptolemosisaworldexpertonpancreaticcancerandiscurrentlyrunningtheTeloVactrialattheUniversityofLiverpool,whichthisgrantisfunding.Byaddinganewtherapeuticvaccinetostandardchemotherapyhehopestocreateanewlevelofcareforpeopleintheadvancedstagesofpancreaticcancer.

mOTOR NeURONe dISeASe£50,000 over 2 yearsMNDisadevastating,progressivedisorderthatdestroysthemuscle-controllingnervecellsinthebrainandspinalcord,leavingpeopleunabletowalk,talkorfeedthemselves.ThisdonationisfundingresearchattheUniversityofSheffieldintoacoughassistmechanicalin-exsufflatorMI-Edevice,whichwillestablishwhetherthemachinecanofferlife-savinghealthbenefitsandreducethetraumaofillness,hospitalstaysandphysiotherapy.

RAINBOW TRUST£25,000RainbowTrustprovidesemotionalandpracticalsupporttofamilieswhohaveachildwithalifethreateningorterminalillness.FamilySupportWorkerscanprovide24hourcarewithinthefamilyhome,inthecommunityorathospital.ThisgrantishelpingtofundaFamilySupportWorkerinManchester.

AlzHeImeR’S SOCIeTy£50,000IntheUK,700,000peoplearecurrentlylivingwithdementia.Themajorityofthesepeoplearelookedafterathomebyanestimated600,000carers.ThegranthashelpedfundAlzheimer’sSociety’snewCarersInformationProgrammewhichrunslocalsessions,providingmuchneededinformationandsupportonAlzheimer’sanddementia.

mAGGIe’S CANCeR CARING CeNTReS£35,000Maggie’sprovidesspecialistcancercentres,inornearhospitals,enablingpatientsandtheircarerstoaccesspsychologicalsupport,complementarytherapies,welfareadviceandinformation.ThisgrantishelpingtofundthebuildingofthenewMaggie’sCotswolds,whichexpects5,000visitorsinthefirstyear,risingto12,000afterthreeyears.

BRATHAy TRUST£50,000 over 2 yearsThisgrantisenablingdisadvantagedyoungpeopletoattendactivitycoursesatBrathayHallinCumbria.Eachprogrammeisindividuallydesignedtomeetthedevelopmentneedsoftheyoungpeopleattendingandtoincreasetheirselfconfidenceandselfesteem.Over1,000youngpeopleareexpectedtobenefit.

BARNARdO’S£45,000 over 2 years“TheFreemasons’GrandCharity’sgenerousgrantsupportingavocationalinstructoratDrB’scafeisenablingourtraineestoacquirevaluableworkplaceskillswhichwillenhancetheirchancesoffindingajoborgoingontofurthertraining.”ChrisBean,DrB’sDeputyServiceManager,Barnardo’s

£5,000 NAmIBIA FlOOdS British Red Cross FollowingdevastatingfloodinginNamibiatheCharityfundedthedeploymentofthemasssanitationemergencyresponseunit,specialisinginpreventingtheoutbreakofdiseases.
