Dear Friends of Oliver,

As you will see in the following pages, 2014 was a banner year for The Oliver Scholars Program. One hundred percent of our seniors graduated from independent school and matriculated into college. Thirty-two percent went off to Ivy league institutions. In April, our 30th Anniversary Gala was our most successful event ever. Generously sponsored by Dior, it was an elegant and inspiring evening that raised nearly $400,000 for Oliver.

The past six months have been an especially busy and productive time:

• We launched our new TuesdayTalks@Oliver series, bringing leaders in fields such as finance, technology and the arts to speak to our students about career opportunities after college.

• We launched a new partnership with Toyota to provide better math and science preparation for our students, with classes beginning spring 2015.

• We professionalized our Placement Office and increased the size of our Scholar Services team.

• We rolled out an online application system and inaugurated a new student database.

• Our Pre-Scholars saw a 67% increase in their SSAT scores from August to November.

• We introduced a new Monday Morning Professional Development program for the staff, with presentations by leaders from a range of New York City nonprofits.

As we enter 2015, we welcome four new Trustees, who bring to Oliver extraordinary expertise in human resources, finance, business, and independent school life:

• Elena Richards, PriceWaterhouseCoopers

• Rob Guimento, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital

• Raina Oberoi, MCSI

• David Thomas, Trevor Day School

In reflecting upon our 30th anniversary, and looking towards the future, we are immensely proud of the more than 1,000 Oliver Alumni spread across the globe who are living examples of Oliver’s core values of Scholarship, Leadership and Service. Of course, our work is far from complete. Events of the past year reminded us all that racial injustice remains a major problem for our city and our nation. Meanwhile, the gap between rich and poor continues to grow. Fortunately, Oliver is at the frontlines: identifying talented students, preparing them for admission to top schools, and empowering them to advance toward leadership roles in the world.

Thank you for your support of our efforts on behalf of New York’s high-achieving students of color. We hope to see you at the 2015 Gala on May 20!

Pre Scholar Services7th GRADE

“ Oliver found me when I was in the 7th grade at a public middle school in Washington Heights,” recalls Oliver alumnus Manny Vega ’04. “I remember my name being called on the loud speakers to report to the Principal’s office. I was trying to figure out what I had done to get called. ‘Don’t worry, you’re not in trouble,’ he said as I slowly walked in. It was at that meeting that I learned about Oliver. The Principal told me about boarding school and how Oliver could help me get a better education. He wanted to know if I was interested so that he could nominate me. ‘Sign me up,’ I said.”

Each fall, some of New York’s best and brightest seventh graders receive a letter, an email, or even a call over the loud speaker informing them that they have been nominated to embark on a journey with the potential to change their lives. Students who are nominated for Oliver

are at the top of their class in their respective middle schools, they are leaders in their communities, and they participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities—from theatre to football to robotics. Nomination to Oliver is the first step in a rigorous application process that lasts over six months. Open houses, standardized tests, multiple interviews, and an online application that would be daunting for a college student are all part of the process that narrows a pool of approximately 600 applicants down to 50. Recruitment and Admissions Coordinator Francisco Pena comments that, “nominees for Oliver come from a wide variety of schools and backgrounds, all with their own individual strengths, weaknesses, and goals for the future. But what is universal is their desire to get a top notch education, and to embrace the opportunities Oliver provides.”

8th GRADE

In the early fall of their eighth grade year, almost exactly one year after being nominated, Oliver’s Pre-Scholars receive another envelope. Inside are the names of the five to eight independent schools to which they will be applying. Oliver’s Pre-Scholar Services team considers

each student’s individual preferences, along with their academic performance, personality, and interests before compiling a final school list. Director of Placement Melissa Providence comments that “it is important for each student’s school list to contain institutions that will serve the student in a number of ways, and suit his or her learning style.” Equally important, however, is “for our families to consider a variety of schools. When a school visit absolutely surprises a family, either positively or negatively, the family walks away having learned something about themselves. To me, this is a crucial part of the process.”

Pre-Scholars spend the fall of their eighth grade year visiting and interviewing at schools, while also receiving SSAT prep and monthly workshops about financial aid, interviewing, and other topics necessary for their success. During the spring semester, our Pre-Scholars participate in expository writing and Algebra classes and wait to hear back from their schools before they participate in our Recognition Ceremony in June.

Summer Immersion Program

Each summer, Oliver’s rising eighth and ninth graders dedicate five weeks of their summer vacations to preparing for success at independent school. From 8AM until 4PM, Monday through Friday almost 100 students participate in our rigorous Summer Immersion Program.

Rising eighth graders take classes in expository writing, critical reading, math, history, and SSAT prep. They also take a daily class on the Independent School Admissions Process, which is de-signed to prepare them for the placement process during their eighth grade year. Rising ninth graders—Scholars who have already been admitted into independent schools—take classes in English, history, algebra, geometry, biology, and physics. They also take part in a daily New Scholar Seminar, which prepares them for everything they will face outside the classroom. Scholars discuss issues that run the gamut from race and socioeconomic class to stress management and conflict resolution.

The last week of the Summer Immersion Program takes place at the Pomfret School in Pomfret, Connecticut. All Scholars, counselors, teachers, and staff live on campus for the week so that students can experience boarding school and so that teachers and staff can observe how students adjust to living and studying away from home. “For me, SIP was an unforgettable experience,” comments Melvin Mercado, an eighth grader at The Equity Project Charter School in Washington Heights. “I learned that I don’t give up when things get hard.”

At Oliver, we pride ourselves on developing well-rounded young leaders. In addition to offering a rigorous and comprehensive academic program during our Summer Immersion Program, we also provide our students with a range of opportunities outside of a traditional academic curriculum. This year we offered electives ranging from Science Fiction to Chess to Kite Making. We also offered a Brown Bag Lunch series, in which students heard from a wide array of speakers, including Oliver alumni, Oliver trustees, and even a representative from the Secret Service who gave a lively talk on internet safety. Additionally SIP I students attended panel discussions with admissions representatives from seventeen schools, who spoke about their respective schools and about the independent school admissions process as a whole.

SIP Open House

Each summer we invite Oliver trustees, independent school partners, and friends to our SIP open house for a chance to observe Oliver in action. Visitors arrived at Leman Prep in lower Manhattan and were escorted to classes by Scholars and Alumni. They saw our rising eighth

and ninth grade students hard at work doing algebra problems, conducting physics experiments, discussing the Civil Rights Movement, and analyzing Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man. Guests were then treated to a panel in which Pre-Scholars, Scholars, and Alumni discussed their journeys, as well as values and goals. This year, we incorporated an evening event for the first time. Nearly thirty guests came out to hear Scholars discuss an article about a controversy in the independent school world. The Scholars debated issues of race, class, and sexual orientation, displaying maturity, wisdom, and refreshing honesty. We look forward to welcoming guests back to SIP in 2015!

Scholar Services

From the moment an Oliver Scholar receives an acceptance letter to independent school, until the day of graduation, our Scholar Services team is responsible for providing support both in and out of the classroom. Oliver nurtures students’ strengths while providing resources

and assistance in areas where they need improvement. We focus on developing well-rounded Scholars and leaders, ensuring they are successful, supported, and fully engaged in their schools and communities. “ Making a difference in other peoples’ lives gives me a great sense of accomplishment, and I know that what we are doing is actually making a difference in my community. Kids have the power to take control and make change happen. Service is not only a tenet of Oliver, but an essential quality in being a leader. I believe that I am setting a good example for other kids who also want to give back to their community.”

Tuesday Talks

TuesdayTalks@Oliver is a new initiative designed to give Oliver Scholars and Alumni a chance to hear from successful professionals and to learn about pathways to a range of careers. On September 30th more than 40 Scholars and Alumni came to Oliver to hear Keith

Canton ’93 and Angel Morales ’92 speak about careers in finance. Canton, an Oliver trustee, is a graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He is a Managing Director in the Private Capital Markets Group at Barclays. Morales, a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School, is a Senior Advisor and Equity Investments Partner at Star Mountain Capital, LLC.

Canton offered advice for the Scholars in achieving success. “Focus on figuring out goals, but be open and be flexible. There’s going to be points in time where you bump up against a wall. Then, it’s up to you to figure out what’s next and ask yourself: ‘do I have the courage to take a leap?’” Morales reminded the students of the importance of academic achievement. “I can’t think of any priority for you right now as high school students above getting good grades.” Canton added, “Don’t under-estimate the network and the value of a calling card from a recognized college in achieving your professional goals.”

The Oliver offices were once again overflowing on October 14th for our second TuesdayTalk@Oliver featuring technologists Greg Gunn and Jake Levine. Harvard faculty member Greg Gunn co-founded Wireless Generation, a leading educational software company now serving more than 3 million children with groundbreaking assessment and instruction products. Jake Levine is the Founder and CEO of Electric Objects. Their first product, EO1, is a framed 23" screen and integrated computer that hangs on the wall and delivers digital artwork into your home. Moderated by Oliver Alumnus and Director of Scholar Services Manny Vega (Exeter ’04, Wesleyan ’08), the focus of the panel discussion was “How to Start a Tech Company.”

Our final TuesdayTalk of the year was hosted by the Luhring Augstine Gallery and organized by Gallery Director Lauren Wittels. Scholars and Pre-Scholars were treated to a private conversation with famed artist Glenn Ligon, whose work is included in the collections of museums coast to coast. Ligon spoke about growing up in the South Bronx and having family members who were baffled when he said he wanted to be an artist. He also talked about attending Wesleyan and RISD and the long journey to finally being able to support himself by making art. It was great “to hear someone finally say that you can make a living based on the fact that you simply enjoy art,” says Oliver Scholar Nicole Mezza (Berkeley Carroll, ’15). She says she enjoyed learning that “there are many careers out there that are not just being an artist but allow you to work with art in various ways whether it’s critiquing or putting a value to a piece of artwork.”

“ I can’t think of any priority for you right now as high school students above getting good grades.”

Internships

The Manhattan District Attorney Legal Bound Summer Internship Program is a rigorous six-week internship that provides students with an insider’s view of the criminal justice system and law enforcement in Manhattan. Scholars have been assigned to various

units within the office and have assisted attorneys and support staff with projects and other responsibilities. The units cover interests including immigration law, the Rikers Prison system, witness protection, and animal rights. Scholars have also attended law-based presentations and trips and worked diligently to prepare for a mock trial at the conclusion of their experience.

While stationed at a unit of their preference, Scholars got to assist government employees in executing daily tasks while learning about the specific work and detail that is required. Scholars also had the opportunity to meet with and speak to District Attorneys, police captains, CIA agents and and other key players in the Districy Attorney’s office. During such sessions, Scholars were able to explore the different aspects of government, explore various career paths and network. With the assistance of their District Attorney mentors, Scholars learned how to create provocative opening statements, how to cross-examine, develop compelling closing statements and feel confident presenting in front of a jury.

“ I was always interested in photography and the ability to capture a moment in a photo. As a result, I was excited by the opportunity to join the DA’s Photography Unit. During my time there, I assisted DA’s by printing and processing important photo evidence for their cases. I also learned how to photograph witnesses, crime scenes and objects of evidence. I especially enjoyed being able to visit crime scenes and learned how to view the scene from the eyes of the witness. Whether it was making observations from the top of a 50- story building or on the ground, just feet from the crime scene, I was able to learn a lot from those who work in the field and how they perceive the work. I learned a lot about the eye of the viewer and how photos truly are worth a million words.”

Fall Events

This fall, Oliver trustees Judith Ann Corrente, Louisa Troubh, Timothy Pope, and Dorothea Schlosser all

generously hosted receptions on Oliver’s behalf. Longtime Oliver supporters, Alumni, and new friends all had the opportunity to meet new CEO, David Allyn, hear remarks from current Oliver Scholars, and mingle in an elegant and intimate setting. Oliver supporter Bruce Tilley hosted a friend raiser at Décor NYC, his Chelsea showroom, where nearly one hundred guests enjoyed live music and cocktails. And finally the 30th Anniversary Alumni Committee hosted a holiday happy hour in December. Oliver Alumni of all ages came out to toast to the holidays and to Oliver!

30th Anniversary Gala

Generously sponsored by Dior, Oliver’s 30th Anniversary Gala was an elegant event featuring cocktails in the Dior boutique, followed by dinner and music surrounded by panoramic views of the city from the Louis Vitton Moet Hennessey tower in Midtown. ABC 7 Eyewitness

News Anchor Sade Baderinwa hosted the event, and presented the Champion of Excellence award to the evening’s honorees—Pamela Baxter, Chief Executive Officer LVMH Perfumes and Cosmetics for North America; New York Times columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin; and John Troubh, founder of JBT Capital and husband of longtime Oliver Trustee Louisa Troubh. Board chair Dorothea Schlosser commented that “Oliver is fortunate to have so many generous supporters, ranging from Dior, who underwrote the entire event, to former Board Chair Judith Corrente, to John and Louisa Troubh, who have been tirelessly working for Oliver’s mission for over two decades.” The 2015 Gala will be held on May 20th at the IAC building in Chelsea. The event will honor Nina Garcia, Fashion Director of Marie Claire magazine. We are also pleased to honor Oliver alumnae Sheena Wright, President of the United Way of New York City and her sister, noted actress Tanya Wright. We are delighted to announce that Dior has generously agreed to return as a sponsor for the second year in a row.

Thank you to all our attendees and sponsors!

“ The Oliver Scholars Program made what I thought was an impossibility possible. Oliver is where the foundation for a better life starts. We all come from low income families and this is our chance to try to make a better life for ourselves and our families through education. Oliver means opportunity.”

Professional Development

In an effort to provide in house professional development for all staff, Oliver has hosted a number of speakers during weekly staff meetings. Speakers have included Kevin Murungi, Director of Human Rights and Foreign Policy at Global Kids, Gaby Jordan from The Handel Group, Ronay Menschel, Chairwoman at the Phipps Houses, and Jacqui Peltzer, Executive Director of Early Steps. In addition to guest speakers, staff meetings are also a time for members of the Oliver team to come together to share updates and ideas, and to work collectively on organization-wide issues.
