From the Board Chairperson…
Dear Friends,
When I joined the Memphis Library Foundation, libraries were still viewed by
many as a book institution and research center. Since then the library as an
institution has evolved and grown into much more than a place where
people simply check out materials and pay late fees. The Memphis Public
Libraries offer a vast array of public programs with subjects ranging from job
fairs to genealogy to language learning. Attendance at our STEAM youth
program has jumped up by over 400% since 2016, and more new
cardholders have been signing up now than in 2017.
The Memphis Library Foundation recognizes the impact libraries have on
communities and in 2017-2018 we launched the Library Inside/Out initiative
with support from the Kresge Foundation and the City of Memphis. This
community-based project provided substantial renovations to the Crenshaw
Branch Library located in the South Memphis neighborhood and the
Randolph Branch located in the Heights neighborhood. Both projects are a
bridge to enhance cultural heritage, safety, and economic growth. We have
used new lighting, color, signage, and landscaping at these locations to
successfully draw larger book borrowing and community attendance.
In addition to physical enhancements at our libraries, the Foundation
continues to provide funding to support the Memphis Room, Discover Read
programs for children, STEM activities for teens, technology services for
seniors and a variety of music program for children and adults. The “All of
Us” program funded by the National Network of Medicine Libraries provides
health information and resources for library patrons. Specifically, NNLM
supports the creation of health information centers in three library branches
and health consumer training for library employees.
All of these accomplishments are only possible through the efforts of the
Memphis Library Foundation Board of Directors and contributors. Our job is
much easier due to the leadership of the Memphis Public Library and the
many volunteers who help us fulfill our mission each day.
Thank you!

Mission
The Memphis Library Foundation’s mission is to
enhance the Memphis Public Libraries’ through
private support. Our organization supports the
Memphis Public Libraries’ in developing impactful,
outcome-based programs and helps to provide
program funding to support collection, technology,
special program, and building enhancements.
High-Impact Programs
Discover Read Centers
Discover READ environments increase kindergarten
readiness by providing caregivers with the
information they need to help their children learn and
comprehend English as well as develop vital social-
emotional and early literacy skills needed before
beginning school. There are currently 12 Discover
READ centers, and are preparing to launch a mobile
Discover READ program.
Five Fridays of Jazz
“Five Fridays of Jazz” is a partnership between the
Memphis Library Foundation, the Levitt Shell, and the
Memphis Public Libraries which features a series of
spring jazz concerts for Memphians to enjoy for free.
Summer Program Camps
All Memphis Public Libraries’ summer camps are funded
by sponsors secured by the Memphis Library
Foundation. In 2018, there were 11 STEM summer
camps held across the library system that served over
250 kids ages 9 – 18.

Enhancements
Library Branch Exterior Improvements
Memphis Library Foundation secured a grant from the Kresge Foundation for a “Libraries
Inside/Out” project into already existing revitalization efforts in the neighborhoods surrounding
the Cornelia Crenshaw and Randolph Library Branches.
Explore Memphis
Explore Memphis, hosted throughout June & July, is the Memphis Public Library’s summer
reading and activity program for all ages designed to keep patrons engaged in learning activities
throughout the summer and includes reading incentives as well as free and discounted
admission to a variety of local educational museums and attractions. Explore Memphis was
funded by Orion Federal Credit Union in conjunction with the Memphis Library Foundation.
