Serving the civil legal needs of Indianarsquos most vulnerable neighbors since 1994
Our Vision ldquoDefend the cause of the weak and fatherless maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed Rescue the weak and needy deliver them from the hand of the wickedrdquo Psalm 823-4
Our Mission To promote justice through legal representation and legal education for our low-income neighbors as a way of demonstrating Christrsquos love
At the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic we take this prophetic call seriously
We seek our marginalized neighbors assisting them in alleviating burdens so they can thrive
Our approach We build programs around vulnerable clients provide justice-oriented advocacy and legal solutions and partner with other high-impact nonprofits and
ministries so that clients receive holistic services
For us this means
Immigrant Justice Program
Victim Justice Program
Project GRACE
Clients served in our Immigrant Justice Program include asylees fleeing brutal regimes refugees seeking to start a new life here and children who were brought to the US at a young age We seek to help our immigrant clients fully integrate into the US which includes seeking the authority to work
Partnering with agencies such as The Julian Center Indiana Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Families First we provide critically-needed legal services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault that will help victims secure immediate safety and long-term well-being
Project GRACE (Guided Re-entry And Community Education) works with ex-offenders helping to remove barriers to successful re-entry Services include limiting access to criminal histories restoring driving privileges and assistance with child support and visitation issues
Consumer Justice Program
Project PEACE
Whether there has been a loss of employment divorceseparation or unexpected health expenses we help protect clients income and provide a fresh financial start Our Helping Hoosier Homeowners program provides a full range of post-purchase housing counseling and mortgage foreclosure prevention services The Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic assists taxpayers who have a dispute with the IRS And our consumer attorneys assist with bankruptcy
The goal of the Project PEACE (Peaceful Engagement And Conflict Education) is to provide an alternative to contentious litigation for family law disputes Rather than lawyering up to deal with custody parenting time and child support we provide volunteer peace coaches who help facilitate collaborative co-parenting relationships and a lawyermediator who can ensure agreements reached are legally sound and in the childrens best interests
About 700 years before Christ the prophet Isaiah encouraged Godrsquos people to ldquoSeek justice defend the oppressed Take up the cause of the fatherless plead the case of the widowrdquo
(Isaiah 117)strong faith strong management strong partnerships strong outcomes
As we continually look to improve our operations we kept revisiting these themes
during 2013 The year was reflective for us and we spent a significant amount of
time in staff team meetings and board meetings talking about how the Neighborhood
Christian Legal Clinic can be most impactful I think the thoughtful discussions (and at
times heated debates) were sparked by three things (1) 2014 is our 20th anniversary
so celebrating a milestone naturally causes one to examine the past and contemplate
the future (2) we spent much of the year drafting our next three-year strategic plan
which will guide us from 2014 through 2016 and (3) our board staff and volunteers are
committed to ensuring that we are a great organization that helps our clients thrive
As we go forward into 2014 and beyond we are excited to continue working to ensure
the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic is a great organization because we know that
the stronger our organization the more significant impact we can have on behalf of our
neighbors
Thank you for partnering with us
