FY2021 IMPACT

Our mission is to distribute food to our neighbors in need by mobilizing our

giving community and volunteers

A letter from the Board Chair Thank you for making Fiscal Year 2021 our most successful year to date. With your support, we grew to meet

dramatically increased needs in ways we never thought possible. We are operating nine mobile pantries,

serving seven new community partners, and have increased the amount of food we give to all our partners.

We distributed over 1 million MORE pounds of food in FY2021 than in FY2020. We hired staff, expanded

warehouse space, bought more food, built a new walk-in refrigerator, and upgraded our technology. We

stayed open in very difficult times, even when others shut their doors. You helped us put food on the table

for over 76,000 people, often more than once. We continued to increase the percentage of food we give

away that is fresh and locally grown.

Because of you, we met the challenges of the past year. Now we are facing new challenges. Just as the

pandemic didn’t impact every household equally, the economic recovery hasn’t benefited everyone equally.

The face of hunger is changing. The newly food insecure in the Washington, DC region are more likely to be

employed, living in larger households with children, and facing eviction than those who experienced food

insecurity before the pandemic. Now, more than ever, we must renew our commitment towards better, more equitable food access.

With your support, we have started taking the necessary steps. We have implemented new technology that

lets us communicate directly with our program participants. We have solicited their feedback about the

variety, quality, and quantity of food we distribute, and about the services we provide. We are using this

feedback to improve our processes, training, and quality control.

We are actively looking for ways to reach food insecure people who still do not know about us. We want to

reach the people who still cannot get to one of our sites or who need prepared meals. Homeless people.

Seniors. People who speak languages other than English. Households whose culture or religion make it

difficult to use the food we traditionally provide. These are key parts of the equitable food safety net that we

want to provide.

Thank you for more making hunger relief a priority, and for joining us in the fight during this record- breaking

year. It will not be easy to work towards equitable food access while sustaining pandemic-level services, but

with your help it is possible. As we near the end of our 26th year, we are more grateful than ever for your

partnership and for this extraordinary community.

FAMILIES USE EMERGENCYFOOD TO REBUILD CLIENT SPOTLIGHTWe met with Augustina and her mother, Yolanda, at

Food for Others partner and mobile site Annandale

United Methodist Church. Augustina spoke on

behalf of herself and her mom. She told us what

it was like for her as a young student in a family

that was facing food insecurity. While she was

in school, her mother came to AUMC to pick up

groceries. Augustina said that knowing there were

hot meals ready for her allowed her to focus on

her schoolwork.

AUMC’s food distributions nourished Yolanda’s family

until the time came that they no longer needed the

pantry’s assistance. Yolanda’s healthy and resilient

children moved on in their careers, pouring their

strength and resources back into their community.

As with so many stories, theirs took an unexpected

turn because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yolanda

and her family were grateful that AUMC and Food

for Others were still there for them, ready to respond

to food insecurity in their neighborhood. Even as

her adult children have gone back to work, Yolanda

continues to visit AUMC while she builds back her

savings. Fortunately, the pandemic did not rob the

early investment she made in Augustina’s education.

On the contrary, Augustina is using her voice to

advocate for herself, her mother, and her neighbors.

Like Yolanda, many people have found themselves

in need of emergency food during the pandemic.

Whether they’re visiting the Food for Others main

warehouse, or one of our nine mobile sites, they

know that they’re going to leave with enough food

to feed their families for 3 to 5 days. That helps them

get to that next paycheck, keep the lights on, or

worry a little less about their kids that week. In FY21,

Food for Others distributed emergency food to

42,159 individuals. So many people came together

to make that possible: all of you who donated

food, money and time, our generous grocery store

partners, Fairfax County, the many social workers,

healthcare providers, and other organizations who

referred families, and our dedicated mobile site

partners. Thank you!

NEW COMMUNITY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT Fighting hunger takes everyone. To help meet the

increasing need for food all over the region, Food

for Others established relationships with seven new

community partners including First A.M.E. Church

of Alexandria (FAME). FAME serves the community

along the Route 1 corridor, an area with poverty,

unstable housing, and food insecurity. FAME

volunteers distribute groceries from Food for Others

and other organizations at their church every other

Wednesday afternoon, feeding 125-150 families

each time.

Volunteers at FAME had already been running a

food pantry for several years prior to the pandemic,

serving a handful of people. Once the pandemic

started, demand skyrocketed and they didn’t know

how they were going to get enough food. Volunteer

Dana Richardson says, “When you all came along

it was absolutely a blessing. We are a small church

and we didn’t know where we were going to get

the funds. When Dustin (Food for Others Program

Coordinator) reached out to me, it was like the sky

was opened up!” Food for Others delivers 5,000

lbs. of groceries including non-perishables, fresh

produce, milk, and eggs every two weeks just in time

for distribution.

Dana tells the story of a family

who received food from FAME.

The mom was forced to quit

work when schools closed.

The husband was the only one

in the family working. She just happened to

be driving by FAME when her daughter looked at

her and asked when they were going to buy food.

She didn’t have the heart to tell her they didn’t

have money for food. At that point they saw the

food giveaway happening at FAME and pulled over.

They cried as they told their story, and the FAME

volunteers loaded them up with as many groceries

as they could give them. That story and many others

have stayed with Dana.

Food for Others is honored to partner with FAME and

our other new partners: She Believes in Me, CityLight

Church, Vienna Presbyterian Church, FACETS,

Salvation Army, and Medical Care for Children

Partnership (MCCP). The CARES grant funding that

pays for this program will end in December of this

year, but with your help, Food for Others plans to

continue this program at least through June 2022.

6

USING TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICEThanks to our generous supporters, Food for

Others upgraded our technology and switched

from Microsoft Access to Salesforce. Inventory,

volunteer management, donor management, and

client services are all now integrated. Making this

shift has made us more efficient in our operations

and has changed the way we interact with our

program participants. The new system also makes

the process easier for clients and social workers. In

the old system, social workers filled out paper forms

or emailed referrals for the emergency program.

Sometimes the paperwork would not arrive, and the

social worker or client would have to make another

call or another trip. Now the portal securely captures

the information the first time and notifies the client

when the referral is in, minimizing confusion.

This new, direct communication with clients has

other benefits as well. We send texts and emails in

two languages to push out news, coordinate mobile

site pickups and get feedback from clients. Our

client satisfaction survey, sent to every emergency

program participant, captures their opinions on the

quality, quantity, and variety of food they receive,

and their experience receiving services at Food for

Others. To incentivize participation, FFO enters each

respondent into a weekly raffle for a grocery store

gift card. The system captures their responses, tracks

the weekly averages, and displays the results on a

company dashboard.

We are delighted that most participants report that

their food lasts 5 days or more and are generally

happy with the variety and quality. When we do

receive negative feedback about the food, we

respond and implement tighter quality control

measures. Our staff also appreciate hearing when

they’ve done a good job.

Thanks to all of our supporters who made this new

technology possible, Food for Others is serving our

food insecure neighbors efficiently and with dignity.

“ The staff is phenomenal! I could see the care and respect in their eyes I cannot thank them enough.”

“ Gracias, es de ayuda para mi y mi familia. Esta comida me ayuda a solventar un poco mi economía.”

( Thank you, it helps me and my family, this food helps me to pay a little for my finances.)

Some recent comments:

MEET LORIVOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHTVolunteer Lori has been making a difference at Food

for Others for the past 6 years. She first started

working in the warehouse packing vegetables with

her husband. After working in the warehouse, she

moved on to preparing orders to better utilize her

talents. Next, she moved to Power Packs and she

has been there ever since.

Currently, Lori volunteers every Monday and many

Tuesdays (leaving time for golf). In addition to

packing Power Packs, she and her husband deliver

them to four schools - Graham Rd., Fairfield, Parkline,

and Mount Vernon- each week. She explained that

the school offices are very thankful and it’s nice

to see.

Lori expressed her appreciation for the comradery

and friendship at Food for Others. She does not

want to sit at home idly in retirement. She also

shared that “knowing [she’s] helping people is her

favorite part of volunteering at Food for Others”.

She described the experience as “mind boggling”

to “hear about people struggling with food when

many people think Fairfax County is a ‘rich county.’”

Lori encourages more people to sign up to volunteer.

When asked what she’d like to tell future volunteers,

she advised them to wear good shoes since they’ll

be standing on concrete, show up for their shifts,

and have fun!

Volunteers are the heart of the Food for Others

mission. This is especially evident in the Power

Pack Program, which provides weekend meals to

thousands of children who rely on school meals for

their nutrition. In FY21, the Power Pack Program

delivered 45,073 meal packs. That’s 270,438

kid-friendly meals, 90,146 tasty snacks, and 90,146

milks and juices! Volunteers packed, inspected, and

delivered these packs, contributing more than 3,000

hours of service.

With school back in person for the 2021-2022 school

year, we’re anticipating that this program will be

bigger than ever. To find out how you can help, visit
