History: Our Past
Built in 1896 by Phineas C. Lounsbury, a former governor of Connecticut, The
Lounsbury House serves as home for the Ridgefield Community Center. Located in
Veteran’s Park and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house has all
the original charm that existed during Governor Lounsbury’s residency. This center of
Ridgefield life is one of the town’s greatest assets - a shining jewel among the
sparkling gems along Main Street.
While attending the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition, Governor Lounsbury was
deeply impressed with the Connecticut State Building, so much so that when he
retired from politics, he built a replica to serve as his family home. Of elaborate Neo-
Classical style, the house is two and a half stories of clapboard with a pediment two
story portico, supported by Ionic columns. Its wraparound porch is as inviting as it is
serviceable.
It is maintained by the staff to the highest standards of historic integrity of
Turn-of-the-20th Century privileged society. Through the efforts of the Women’s
Committee, much of the original work survives— from the exquisite moldings to the
massive doors to the superb staircase with its call to graceful living.
Phineas Lounsbury originally called his home “Grovelawn,” living here with his wife
until the 1920s. At that time, the house was surrounded by beautiful gardens, an
orchard, a greenhouse and a windmill. Its operation and maintenance required an
indoor staff of 14, plus 12 others tending to the grounds. In the early 1900s Phineas
brought many of his wealthy New York friends to visit Ridgefield - some liked what
they saw and built summer houses nearby, adding more sparkle to the town.

A Note from our President:
The Community Center’s mission statement documents our goal of being the
“heartbeat of Ridgefield community life” and positively affecting the lives of as many
Ridgefield residents as possible. We are dedicated to serving all organizations and
residents who can benefit from our programs or enjoy the use of Lounsbury House.
We are fortunate to have as our headquarters the historic, 1896 home of former
governor Phineas Lounsbury. The house is a living symbol of life in Ridgefield, past
and present, and touches the hearts and minds of residents and visitors alike. Its
importance to the landscape of the town cannot be denied.
The entire Community Center family is dedicated to the historic preservation of this
wonderful building so that it can continue to serve the town and its residents well.
More than just a symbol, it is a living, working facility that is available to everyone in
the town for their use and enjoyment.
A comprehensive Strategic Plan, developed and implemented during the 2009 – 2011
timeframe, helped make 2012 a year of significant events and historic preservation
efforts. The Community Center staff, led by Executive Director Di Masters, and
several dedicated committees comprised of board members, incorporators, and
volunteers have turned many aspects of the plan into reality.
We want to thank all of the individuals and organizations who have supported the
Community Center through donations, grants, volunteer efforts, and participation in
our events and activities. Without that support the Community Center could not
function and the future of The Lounsbury House would be in peril. We look forward
to your continued support as we continue our efforts to be a most positive influence
on community life in Ridgefield.
John Olson
President, Board of Directors

Our Present:
The Lounsbury House at the Ridgefield Community Center, is a non-profit 501(c)3
organization. Membership dues, annual appeals and fundraising campaigns, along with
the house event rentals and tenant income, help offset the mounting costs of
operating, maintaining and restoring this home.
The Center’s Board of Directors concerns itself mainly with the organization’s
function and as well as the maintenance and preservation of the building .The
Women’s Committee was formed many years ago to focus on design and presentation
of the interior and the purchase of fixtures and furniture.
The various programs sponsored by the Community Center are under the direction of
Di Masters, our Executive Director, and supported by two additional staff members
and a caretaker. In addition to community programming and outreach, Di and the
staff manage daily operations, event planning and rentals and oversight of capital
restoration projects. Various committees of our Board of Directors take leadership
and other active roles in the conduct of the Community Center’s activities. Many
Ridgefield residents also volunteer their time and efforts to the success of the
Community Center’s programs. The Community Center’s programs are truly a
community undertaking with widespread participation.

A Word from our Director:
We are seeing positive results that benefit both the Ridgefield community and the
historic Lounsbury House from the work we invested in a strategic plan analysis three
years ago. Of course, it would not be possible without the teamwork of an
invigorated Board of Directors, guidance-providing Incorporators, generous donors,
enthusiastic volunteers and an exceptional staff. The Lounsbury House has
undergone much needed restoration work and community residents and non-profit
organizations are using the property in record numbers.
The parking lot and entryway are restored to the safe and stately condition that is
expected at such a well-used and grand address. All historic third floor windows, as
well as selected second story windows have now been restored, resolving significant
window deterioration and water infiltration problems which have plagued the
mansion for years. Next we will begin restoring the deteriorated historic molding
immediately following the 2013 Crystal Ball.
If all the preservation and restoration progress that has been accomplished was not
enough, we are committed to providing even more program opportunities to the
community and we continue to explore partnerships and alliances to better expand
those possibilities. Much work remains to be done and the challenge of funding these
efforts is significant. I am confident with the help of our loyal supporters we will
continue as the “heartbeat “of the community. The rewards are great for the Town of
Ridgefield, its residents and its organization.

Fundraising: Upcoming Traditions
The Lounsbury House Crystal Ball, February 9, 2013
Please join us at the 2013 Gala as it promises to be another spectacular New England winters’ evening of great company, delicious food, lively music and dancing. We anticipate a full house as we honor our own Beth Yanity with the Crystal Ball Award for over 57 years of her tireless commitment and service to the Lounsbury House. The Ridgefield Community Center Board of Directors is proud to honor this very special lady who has been a long time champion of the Ridgefield Community Center. As many of you know, Beth Yanity has been a faithful and committed friend to the Community Center as well as to so many other areas of Ridgefield. Beth is responsible for championing many of the early decisions that have safeguarded the pristine preservation of the mansion that the community enjoys today. It is our great pleasure to be able to honor and thank Beth on the 60th anniversary of the Ridgefield Community Center, an organization she has invested so much of her time and passion in preserving Each dollar that is raised at the Crystal Ball will be used for ongoing restoration and preservation projects at our magnificent “Mansion on Main”.

Tree Festival: November 21-24, 2013
Antiques Market and Fair: Saturday, May 4, 2013
The 50th Anniversary Antiques Market and Fair in May 2012 was a terrific success. The quality antique dealers were on hand, along with the addition this year of the vintage clothing, jewelry and textiles dealers who filled the interior of the mansion. The Ferris Wheel, reminiscent of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, the carousel and the delectable food vendors created a family friendly fair atmosphere for nearly 2000 guests on the Lounsbury property. With the distinction of hosting the longest running outdoor Antiques Market in the Northeast, we look forward to our 51st Antiques Market, rain or shine, on May 4, 2013.
The bi-annual Women’s Committee
Holiday Tree Festival takes place
on odd numbered years. All the
proceeds from this splendid festival
go toward the restoration,
preservation and decoration of the
interior of the Lounsbury House.
Some of the Women’s Committee
members have been the
gatekeepers of the pristine
preservation of the mansion since
the 1950’s and the Tree festival has
been enjoyed by the community for
almost as many years.
The tree festival will return again
November 21-24, 2013.

Restoration and Preservation: Paver Projects I and II: The RCC rolled out a paving campaign to raise much needed funds to refurbish the front of the grand entrance to the house. The new pavers that were installed in front of the mansion created an enhanced entryway and a beautiful piazza for the numerousceremonies and memorials that take place there each year. This was completed in August, 2011 and was entirely funded through the generous donation of supporters and grants. The phase II portion of the parking lot restoration, drainage, repaving and lighting was completed thanks to the collaboration and cooperation of the Town of Ridgefield highway department in August, 2012.
The new piazza was installed August, 2011.

Historic Window Restoration: The window restoration project began on October 4, 2011under the direction of contractor Kronenberger & Sons Restoration Company, an EPA certified company with an expertise in historic restoration and was completed on July 23, 2012. The completion of this project should bring to a close the water infiltration that has plagued the mansion for several years and damaged the historic moldings in the grand first floor reception rooms. With water issues resolved, we are ready to begin the final phase of restoration project, the repair and restoration of the historic molding. This final phase will begin immediately following the Crystal Ball on February 11, 2013.
