The mission of Providence Children’s Museum is to inspire

Charting the CourseThe Museum began 2015 by adopting a new strategic plan, developed over the preceding year with input from Board, staff and volunteers. A blueprint for navigating the challenges and opportunities of the next three years, the plan outlines major goals and the strategies for achieving them, in addition to and in support of the work required to keep the Museum running smoothly on a daily basis:

• Ensure excellent visitor experiences – in exhibits, environments, activities and facilities, and through interaction with staff and volunteers – that deliver on the Museum’s mission to inspire and celebrate children’s learning through active play and exploration.

• Go beyond the Museum’s walls to reach underserved children and families, continuing and deepening outreach to out-of-school and early childhood programs, community centers and parks in urban neighborhoods, as well as through therapeutic visitation for at-risk families.

• Advance the Museum’s leadership role as a strong and visible advocate for children’s right to and need for self-directed free play.

• Ensure an active and engaged Board of Directors that reflects the community and furthers the Museum’s mission.

• Ensure a well-qualified, highly motivated and diverse staff to provide excellent programming and management.

• Ensure the Museum has the financial resources to accomplish its goals through diverse sources of income – earned revenues and contracts, charitable gifts, project and government grants.

• Ensure the Museum’s successful future growth and that it continues to meet community needs.

While there is important work to do to ensure the Museum remains a vital and growing community resource committed to the most important needs of children and families, it entered 2015 as a solid and fiscally strong institution poised for positive change. Over the course of the year, the Board conducted a national search for a dynamic new leader to follow the three-decade legacy of former director Janice O’Donnell, culminating in the enthusiastic appointment of Caroline Payson as executive director effective winter 2016.

Advancing the Museum’s Research

The Museum collaborated with Brown University on two major National Science Foundation-funded research projects:

Learning About Learning (award #1223777) In the third year of a project investigating how to make children’s thinking and learning through play more visible, the research team explored a variety of strategies including new observation and reflection activities for caregivers, new materials for communicating with visitors, and updates to its Mind Lab space.

Exploring and Explaining (award #1420548) The Museum and Brown partnered with two other children’s museum/researcher teams on a new project to investigate how open-ended exploration and parent-child interactions in museum settings might support the development of scientific thinking skills like causal reasoning, and how museums can better support children’s exploration and learning.

The Museum also hosted ongoing research studies by Brown University and Providence College and was one of 10 children’s museums selected for an Association of Children’s Museums’ project to build a field-wide research agenda and network of practice.

Inspiring a Love of LearningThe Museum’s 19th AmeriCorps team dedicated over 20,000 hours to provide rich and stimulating play-based learning experiences to children in under-resourced neighborhoods in greater Providence by:

• Facilitating creative problem-solving activities to foster flexible, scientific thinking and support school readiness for over 1,000 preschoolers in 56 Head Start classrooms, and welcoming children on field trips to the Museum.

• Conducting interactive after-school and summer Learning Clubs that playfully mixed in mathematical skills and content for over 250 school-age kids at inner-city schools and community centers, including the Boys & Girls Club and Highlander Charter School in South Providence.

• Hosting free Museum family nights where nearly 1,200 low-income children, their caregivers and siblings played and explored together and received complimentary year-long admission passes.

Nurturing Families in NeedFamilies Together – the Museum’s nationally recognized program to help children in state care and their families strengthen relationships through play – conducted therapeutic visitation and permanency planning for 309 children and 235 adults in 182 court-separated families and provided parent/child evaluations for another 23 families. As part of a coalition of five agencies providing visitation services, the program received a grant to assess visitation practices and their impact on families’ long-term success. Families Together clinicians also served on committees that address child welfare practice, policies and legislation statewide.

Hands-On ActivitiesThe Museum plans and presents hundreds of hours of interactive public programming each year. Some of 2015’s greatest hits included encounters with

bunnies, teacup pigs and other critters from Rhode Island farms; active outdoor exploration of bubbles,

mud and air-powered rockets; an energetic musical celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month; opportunities for

hands-on investigation of engineering and electricity activities; and a third annual Cardboard Challenge, a worldwide celebration of

imaginative play that inspired inventive cardboard creations. The Museum also piloted a new series especially for homeschool families, which encouraged kids to experiment and problem solve as they tackled design challenges together.

On DisplayIn collaboration with community partners, the Museum hosted these evocative installations:

• An imaginative, interactive art experience, Unicorns in Residence invited families to join a citywide search for a missing unicorn. Visitors encountered sparkly unicorn figures, posters and photos of the unicorn at landmarks around the world, and a glittered phone booth where they could report a sighting to the unicorn hotline.

• Adoption Rhode Island’s 10th annual Heart Gallery – striking portraits of Rhode Island children in state care and awaiting permanent families – increased awareness of the need for loving adoptive homes for children in foster care.

And other playful displays popped up throughout the Museum:

• A charming collection of handcrafted metal miniatures, silly scenes suggested by favorite games, and a tiny tour of “Little Rhody” all appeared in the atrium walkway window boxes.

• Visitors got a glimpse of intricate and colorful Chinese and Indonesian shadow puppets, astronomy-related objects like planetary models and star charts, and hand-carved scenes from favorite Mother Goose rhymes in ThinkSpace .

• Marionettes from the Museum’s collection inhabited a whimsical winter wonderland and joined a playful puppet parade, while the lobby display case featured a train-traveling fantasy adventure.

Serve Rhode Island

Community PartnersOrganizations with which the Museum collaborated to deliver play and learning experiences, to increase awareness about the importance of play, or to otherwise serve its mission

The Museum and partners presented a third annual Pop-Up Play Day to kick off a summer of play, where families built forts, designed structures,

and invented imaginative playthings from interesting “loose parts.”

• Collaborated on the second summer of Providence PlayCorps with the Partnership for Providence Parks and the City of Providence. An initiative to activate city parks with play and creative exploration in conjunction with the free federal summer meals program, PlayCorps welcomed 3,800 kids at 17 urban neighborhood parks.

• Advocated for a statewide policy that recognizes the importance of play and provides at least 20 minutes of elementary school recess each day, as a lead collaborator of Recess for Rhode Island.

• Hosted a screening and discussion of “The Land” – a documentary about an adventure playground where children climb trees, light fires, use hammers and nails, and take other risks as they play freely.

Investigating My SkyOver the summer, the Museum hosted My Sky, an immersive traveling exhibit that encouraged families to look up and be inspired by the wonders of the universe. Produced by Boston Children’s Museum in collaboration with Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and NASA, My Sky invited visitors to examine close-up images of the sun, gaze through a telescope to study the stars and planets, explore the phases of the moon, discover constellations, and more.

In celebration of My Sky , kids created star systems and asteroids, made sundials and solar warmers, and engaged in other activities exploring the daytime and night sky in the Museum’s Discovery Studio , plus joined astronomers from Brown University to experiment with solar telescopes.

Building a Play AgendaTo further ongoing efforts to advocate for and raise awareness of the critical importance of play for children’s healthy development, the Museum:

• Brought open-ended, creative play experiences to over 1,600 kids and family members at neighborhood parks and community events across Providence.

• Created a vibrant, interactive sound sculpture from intriguing reclaimed objects for Harriet & Sayles Park in South Providence as part of PopUp Providence – an innovative program to enliven neighborhoods across the city.
