Our transformation continues to evolve through collaborative standardization process that involves all level of decision-making throughout the organization. Our shared responsibilities as a Board, staff and management continue to create a healthy attitude and pathways to improve each client’s experience.This year Pathstone was selected to be the Lead Agency for Niagara. A lot of hard work was done by management, staff and the Board to make this happen.Our Hear & Now Walk-In clinic is a success and continues to be, exceeding our initial expectations.As a Board, it is our hope that we will continue to advance the awareness of how mental health challenges affect our community as a whole. We need to continue to invest in our children and youth, resulting in a positive impact on family relationships.The Board wishes to thank the Management and all employees for the dedication shown this past year to the children that have used the services of Pathstone.

Our Forward Focus

Pathstone’s Confirmation of TransformationOver the past year Pathstone’s focus has been in a highly transformative mode through collaboration and standardization of processes, protocols and procedures to improve our standard of care and practices to benefit our Niagara kids and families. The results have exceeded our expectations as we have seen a dramatic improvement in our families experiencing quicker access to our service.We are living in a very exciting transformational period for mental health and addiction services. Niagara Moving on Mental Health is an effort to build a more collaborative system of how mental health and addiction services are delivered to children, youth and families in our community. As Niagara’s Lead Agency, Pathstone will also provide input to the Ministry of Child and Youth Services (MCYS) on how mental health services are delivered, how programs are aligned and how to enhance seamless care path-ways to quickly access service.Pathstone, will be expected to take a facilitative and leadership role in convening and coordinating partnerships with our Children’s Sector community partners to collectively improve the experience and outcomes for Niagara families seeking assistance. Pathstone is striving to move towards an ‘upstream pro-active early intervention approach’ with a laser driven focus. One example of that is our NEW Hear & Now- Walk In Clinic. This initiative is a fine example of removing barriers to care and giving clients immediate access to treatment.Optimally, it is our goal to have every family seen within 30 days of their referral date to Pathstone for treatment. As an organization, we are so grateful to our community partners for their significant contributions and ongoing support to serve our families across Niagara

Following the Funding

Current Year – 2017-2018Management Discussion and Analysis

The following discussion and analysis should be read in conjunction with the financial statements provided. The Financial Services Division of Pathstone Mental Health is responsible for all financial planning, analysis and reporting for the agency. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.Our auditors this year were Durward Jones Barkwell & Company LLP. If you would like additional information, or to request to review a copy of the audited financial statements in their entirety, please call Pathstone at 905-688-6850.

REVENUETotal revenue in the 2017-2018 fiscal was 2.5% lower than the prior year. Funds from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) were down by 2.75% due to one-time funds received in the prior year for capital improvements and additional client support. Funding from the Ministry of the Attorney General was down due to one-time funding received to address wait lists in the prior year. Additional funds were received from the Region of Niagara in 2017-2018 for program stabilization. Special Projects revenue increased by 21.8% due to additional funds received from the Branscombe Family Foundation to support a new “Kids Can’t Wait” program.

Pathstone Foundation has continued to support the Agency in the 2017-2018 fiscal year with an annual contribution of $60,000 for support of children’s mental health services. Additional funds of $105,524 flowed from the Foundation to assist with specific programs.

EXPENSESTotal expenses were less than the prior year by 2.2%. The decrease was in large part due to savings in salaries and benefits associated with position vacancies. Occupancy costs decreased as a result of the change in premises.

ASSETSAssets increased by 24.6% due to increases in cash holdings and accounts receivable.

LIABILITIESCurrent liabilities decreased by 11.4% over the prior year due to the timing of operating payables. The mortgage payable was reduced by $63,415; the amount of the Prince Charles mort-gage.

FUND BALANCESPathstone Fund Balances increased in the 2017-2018 fiscal year by 20.8% due to the sale of the Prince Charles property and the associated gain on sale.

CONCLUSIONAt March 31, 2018 the Agency recorded a surplus of revenue over expenses of $104,131.The Agency’s financial position remains strong with adequate assets and working capital to meet its needs going forward.

Youth Engagement (YAC)Youth Advisory Committee at Pathstone

Comprised of a diverse group of youth from the Niagara Region with a passion for highlighting our peers’ voices within the agency, The Youth Advi-sory Committee (YAC) has been extremely active over the past 12 months.

One of our most notable initiatives was the creation and ongoing success of our @youthofpathstone Instagram page. We wanted to create a social media platform for youth to receive positive and encouraging messages regarding mental health and wellness, as well as be able to connect with other youth to share ideas, ask questions, and learn information related to support services available in the area. Please give us a follow!

As the Advisory, we meet with other youth who volunteer with Pathstone, supporting them on the various committees that include our Behaviour Management and Trauma-Informed committees.

These roles ensure that a youth perspective is being recognized at all levels within the agency.

In March, a logo design contest was launched at E.L. Crossley Secondary School. They were asked to design a logo that reflected the values of Pathstone’s NEW Hear & Now Walk-In Clinic. After receiving a handful of amazing designs, the YAC chose a logo created by Grade 10 student, Sofia Labricciosa. It, accom-panied by a poem she wrote, is now featured at the clinic.

And finally, the YAC is liaising with other youth mental health-focused proj-ects throughout the province. We are in constant communication with other YAC’s in an effort to share ideas, infor-mation and support, focused on continu-ing to create safe and engaging spaces for youth within the field of child and youth mental health. These partnerships are mutually beneficial and we are really looking forward to seeing what is in store next!This upcoming year, we anticipate being involved in a few more new and exciting initiatives such as supporting anti-bullying strategies through Wellness Walls, so stay tuned.

Pathstone’s mission is to ensure children, youth and families in Niagara have the support and resources they need when confronted with an overwhelming emo-tional or mental health issue.All the members of the Foundation’s board share a deep appreciation of the accomplishments which the Pathstone agency has made over the last year. The leadership of the agency is exceptional, its board is progressive and the agency staff is passionately dedicated in their service to our community.Over the past 12 months we have seen a dramatic decline in the wait list. While the numbers of those who need our programs and services continues to grow, the staff at Pathstone consistently keep wait times at an all-time low. The Natural Playground and Healing Garden at Branscombe Mental Health Centre is a first for a children’s mental health agency in Canada and will enhance and facilitate the treatment of our young clients. The 9th Annual Hope Award Gala captured exceptional sponsorship support and some 600 guests attended to see Steven Page sing and speak about his own mental health struggles.And finally, the exceptional work of Pathstone was recognized by the province of Ontario this year, with the designation as Lead Agency. I am sure Pathstone will have a positive leadership impact in its new role.In light of all of the forgoing, it is easy to understand the Foundation board’s enthusiasm and zeal in supporting the Pathstone mission. I want to thank our staff for their commitment and guidance and I want to thank our board for the quality of their ambassadorship on behalf of Pathstone and their ongoing successful fund and friend raising.

Our HerosMeet our 2018 Hope Award Gala Youth Speaker, Chloe Leblanc

Chloe, came through Pathstone’s doors when she was a teenager. She was seeking support for the grief she was experiencing after her mother, Trisha Potvin lost a courageous battle to cancer.This past June, Chloe spoke about her childhood, her mother and her Pathstone experience at our Hope Award Gala “I was a happy and out-going kid, I was always in dresses and my mother would tie up my hair in ribbons. We were a fun family, taking lots of trips to Disney, African Lion Safari and even just the splash pad down the road. I helped my mom cook and clean, even when I was too short to reach the counter, we were fans of the Food Network.When I was around age five, my mom stopped getting out of bed. She started taking medication and shortly after Christmas, my siblings and I were told she had breast cancer and a brain tumour. Nurses were con-stantly at our house taking care of her. My brother and I started watching TV with her in her room to keep her company and we even made a game out of seeing which of us could get what my mom needed the fastest.Four years later, we planned what we knew would be our final trip to Disney, but mom didn’t make it. She passed away on November 22nd, 2009 at the age of 31. I was just nine years old.I didn’t cry at her funeral. I still felt like she would come back at any moment. I returned to school but it was difficult. I felt like I couldn’t talk to my friends about what I was going through. My grades started to slip and I had no motivation. Our house was very quiet.When I turned 14, my dad and his girlfriend suggested I try therapy at Pathstone. That’s when I met Angel Graham who taught me how to cope with grief as well as how to spot it. Two years later, I “graduated” from the Grief & Trauma Program. Angel’s words are always with me, “Don’t just survive by living day to day, you need to thrive by experiencing joy again.“I’ve now graduated High School and have been accepted to Brock for Psychology. I want to be a therapist too, so I can help others the way Angel helped me.

Sue Chapman Award – Sue Etherington

Sue recognized the need for a walk-in clinic to improve access and meet the immedi-

ate needs of Niagara families. She worked tirelessly to help develop and open what is

now known as the Hear & Now Walk-In Clinic. Sue has worn many hats in the

agency and has always been a passionate advocate for clients.

Organizational Values Award – Linda Vespoli-Burch

Behind the scenes, you will find Linda. Her work ethic shows that she goes above and

beyond her “job description”. Linda also supports many aspects of programming at

Pathstone. She manages our volunteer and student programs and has done an amaz-

ing job at improving the agency’s social media presence in the community. Linda has

also taken on extra tasks to compensate for vacancies and support the management

team and Foundation.

Innovation Award – Zameena Hussein

Zameena has helped to develop the trauma clinic which provides service to clients

and caregivers to address the waiting list for children and families dealing with trauma

or history of trauma. Behind the scenes she is diligent in reporting the benefits of the

work completed. Zameena also voluntarily helped create and sits on the Pathstone

Inclusivity Alliance.

Spirit Award – Karen McLean

Karen took the initiative and spearheaded Children’s Mental Health Awareness

Week. She formed and led a committee and together, they work to raise awareness,

build camaraderie in the agency and foster great staff morale. CMHAW is now a two

year strong event that continues to gain momentum. Karen’s positive, go get it nature

really deserves to be promoted. She is a fearless leader.
