It is a pleasure to be able to report at last that mains are

in course of being laid by the North Warwickshirc WaterCompany to supply the hamlet and almshouses of TempleBalsall. The polluted wells of that area have been for manyyears under the consideration of the Distdct Council, and theobvious remedy is now being taken owing to a great extent ofthe necessity of a large residence on tl.le couNe of the proposed

main.

The water supply oI the Solihull and Meriden JointIsolation Hospital at Catherine de Barnes has been dcrivedfrom a shallow well which has naturally been founcl at timesinsufficient to provide adequately {or so largc an institntion,and the supply from this source broke clown irltogether in thcautumn. Since then water has becn suppliecl by means oIwater-carts to make up the deficiency. Rccently also rvaterhas been pumped from a ne$'well in course of sinking, and thiswater has been used in the Hospital for purposes not rcquiringa pure supply.

The new rvell has been sunk rvith great difficulty to a

considerable depth ir the drift gravel, anil it is plopose(L tokeep out the surface $'ater front this stratum ancl to tap asupply lrom beneath the next impermeable stratun. If a

sufiicient supply giving a good analysis is obtained within a

reasonable time, all requirements will be met. but it appearsto me that it would ha ve been better to have arranged for an

extension of the water main as suggested, before the hospitalwas built, at the Local Governrnent Board Inquiry as analternative.

The number of new houses with regard to which occupa-tion certificates have been granted during the year under thePublic Health (Water) Act with respect to water supplies fromprivate wells was 31, these houses being supplied from a totalof 20 new wells. This total does not represcnt all the new

Draitwgc and Saec/dgr.- The grcat majority of properticsalong the line of nerv se\vers at Shirlcy and l3lossomfield havebeen connected, as rvill be seen from the Inspector's report, noless than 173 conncctions having been made cluring thc ycarunder his supervision, leavinEl only 123 houscs still uncor-nected. In this \\, av a very largc number of r-r-rost o{fensiveconditions haye bercn abolishecl, and a notlblc inprovcmcntin szrnitation gcnerallv obtained.

'fhe butchers have continucd to co-operate with theCouncil's of{icials in cases where meat after slaughter hasappeared in anv rvav unsound, and the Inspector gives detailsof voluntarv surenderc of meat found on inspection unfit forfood. No tubercular meat was discovered during the vear.

On the whoie the meat suppiy of the District may be saidto be prepared under satisfactorv conditions.

The Sale of Food and Drugs Acts are administeredertirely by the olficers of the County Council.
