This annual report aims to share information about the Ohio State China Gateway’s key programs, events and activities in the past fiscal year.

The China Gateway continues to find success in three key areas, including faculty support, student engagement and service, and alumni engagement. The office has explored new programs such as evidence-based training for nurses.

In the past fiscal year, the China Gateway expanded student and support services with additional career fairs organized twice a year. At the most recent fair, 130 companies attended and offered hundreds of positions specifically for the students and alumni from the 12 host universities including Ohio State. Multinational companies and local tech giants such as Apple, IBM, A&F, Audi, JP Morgan, PwC, Bloomberg, GE, Coca-Cola, Microsoft and Tencent attended the fair and encouraged universities to continue this effort. Through this event, employers learned more about Ohio State, the university enhanced its reputation and the event was widely reported by mass media in China.

With two new staff joining the office and supporting alumni engagement efforts, three of four alumni clubs in the Greater China area (Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai) reached Scarlet Level status, the highest level granted by The Ohio State University Alumni Association. More and more alumni in Greater China may enjoy a variety of activities including game watching parties, alumni receptions, mixer parties and museum and corporate visits. In total, there are 31 alumni events held by these three alumni clubs. Over 600 individuals have participated in alumni events this year. Creating an active Buckeye community is a goal the China Gateway strives to achieve.

This year, the China Gateway Discovery Theme Grant supported two groups of faculty to conduct research collaborations with Chinese counterparts. One group focused on agricultural environment and energy, which addresses issues such as food safety, environment sustainability and human health. The seed grant enables faculty to explore common research fields with Chinese universities and students from Ohio State participate and learn how to conduct research with Chinese students.

In 2017, the total expenses for the China Gateway were $313,435.50 (exchange rate to CNY is 6.67 as of August 20, 2017), compared to last year’s total expenses of $338,434.35, a decrease of $24,998.85 (7.39%). The difference was mainly due to the decrease in reimbursable expenses such as event organization costs and faculty-related travel costs. Last year, the China Gateway hosted and pre-paid for large events such as President Drake’s reception. There were also some one-time costs such as new office build-out expenses last fiscal year.

Following is a chart showing a comparison of the last three years of operating expenses of the China Gateway. The annual expenses are expected to stabilize and grow slightly in the next fiscal year taking into consideration inflation in the China market as well as other growing businesses and services.

It not only offered new students a great chance to have plenty of knowledge about the school before their departure, but also created an opportunity for them to make new friends in advance. This is the effective way to help them overcome the culture shock and reduce their nerves.” Chenchen’s mother also participated in the parent panel of PDO.

One parent of an incoming student told the China Gateway staff that through PDO he had a comprehensive understanding of The Ohio State University. “Before PDO, all I knew about Ohio State was from the Internet. But now I even know the O-H-I-O greetings! The teachers are very friendly; I think my son will enjoy the campus life after his arrival.”
