Currently there are 23 members in SPIE Student Chapter IISER Kolkata.

Chapter Activities

An outreach activity consisted of workshops and talks, was conducted during March 2015 in

Ek Pehal, an initiative by IISER Kolkata students for educating school students with poor

financial background. There were around 50-60 students who were involved in this activity.

The main focus of the workshop was to provide the school students basic knowledge in the

field of optics. Some simple optics related demonstrations were done. Outreach activity

optics kit provided by SPIE and additional purchased optics kits were used in this activity.

SPIE Student Chapter IISER Kolkata awarded the winners of Eastern India Science Fair with

cash prices.

1st position: Abhijit Mondal

Project title: Automatic Street light Control; School: Keranitola Shree Shree Mohananda Vidya Mandir

Awarded ₹15,000 ($239.94)

2nd position: Md. Abdul Halim

Project title: Simple Water Microscope; School: Dhanyaram Karbaripara High School

Awarded ₹10,000 ($159.96)

3rd position: Puja Yadav Project title: Jyoti(meaning Light); School : Satsang High School Awarded ₹5,000 ($95.98)

SPIE Student Chapter IISER Kolkata conducted a trip to Birla Institute of

Technological Museum (BITM), Kolkata for SPIE members and non-members as well.

SPIE Student Chapter IISER Kolkata conducted an online photography event on the

occasion of International Year of Light and the winners were awarded with total

cash price of ₹1000.

Planned Activities for the future

We plan to organize a two day workshop on Optics and Photonics in collaboration

with OSA chapter of IISER Kolkata.

Outreach activity in the north-eastern states of India, which is still educationally not so

developed, we aim to spread awareness among the students there.

We plan to start a small optics lab at our own institute to promote students to take interest

in optics and photonics and do some creativity based experiments.

Organize quiz competitions in different schools in our locality.

Optics based event in our institute’s science fest, Inquivesta 2016, which is one of the

largest in India.

This chapter is thankful to all its members for working whole heartedly and actively participating

in its activities. We express our sincere gratitude to Tasha Chicovsky for her undying support,
