ANNUAL REPORT
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO AND PRESIDENT
Our mission is to improve lives around the world by advancing innovative economic and policy solutions that create jobs, widen access to capital and enhance health.
Mike KlowdenCEO
Paul IrvingPresident
We set an ambitious agenda for the Milken Institute in 2012, and we’re pleased to report another year of significant accomplishment and growing impact:
• A Celebration of Science, convened by our FasterCures
center, brought together an extraordinary group of elected officials and global leaders in medical research, health policy and business in Washington, D.C., to support investment in bioscience and our quest to accelerate medical solutions.
• We launched a research center focused on Asia and embarked on several new initiatives that have sharpened our focus on improving health, advancing medical research, increasing the understanding and effectiveness of financial markets and facilitating access to capital.
• Global Conference, our signature event, attracted high-level attendees from every corner of the globe and another remarkable roster of speakers. Stakeholder feedback was better than ever on our London Summit, California Summit, and Partnering for Cures events and the dozens of more intimate meetings we conducted during the year from Santa Monica to Singapore.
• We published a new index, “Best Cities for Successful Aging,” that leaders in the field called “enormous and impressive” and “one of those groundbreaking markers that changed how the country and perhaps even the rest of the world begins to look at the senior population.”
This unique mix of change-oriented programs and applied research distinguishes the Milken Institute from any other global think tank. Our work is about develop-ing solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges. It’s about establishing initiatives that drive policy in the right direction. And it’s about connecting innovators, business leaders and decision-makers with the ideas, influence and ability to get things done.
To quote President Clinton’s remarks at our 2012 Global Conference: “If we live in an interdependent world, we ought to be struggling for shared prosperity and shared responsibility. To do it, we will have to find common solutions.” Our goal is exactly that: to find solutions and support policies and progress that will increase prosper-ity and improve lives around the world.
We are proud of the achievements noted above and many more represented in the pages that follow. None of it could be done without the intense effort of our dedicated staff; the counsel and insight of our board, advisors and fellows; and, most importantly, the generous support and valued engagement of our sponsors, supporters and associates.
Looking ahead to 2013, we are planning another year of exciting events, valuable research outcomes and high-impact initiatives. We invite you to get actively involved. Together, we can change the world.
Mike Klowden Paul Irving

Our new “Best Cities for Successful Aging” index ranked U.S. metropolitan areas on 78 factors that are key to helping residents age in place. Provo, Utah, led the list of large cities, while Sioux Falls, S.D., topped the small cities rankings. Our policy-oriented report also recommended best practices so all cities can improve the quality of life for older citizens.
