Page 4: annual report - Laboratory Products Association › files › LPA AR11 web.pdfThe Laboratory Products Association (LPA) was founded in 1918 as the Scientific Apparatus Makers Association.

At the LPA Annual Meeting this past November, I assumed the Chairmanship of the LPA. I am pleased to have the opportunity tolead this dynamic organization for the next two years. On behalf of all of us I want to extend a gracious thank you to our immediatepast chairman, Steve Gound of Labconco Corporation for his dedicated and successful leadership of the LPA for the past two years.Steve has worked with our President, Clark Mulligan to put forth many new initiatives that have helped position the LPA to increasethe value proposition of membership.

Like many of you, I have been involved in the LPA for many years and I have witnessed the many changes in our industry and ourorganization which have occurred during that time. I believe that the LPA is stronger than ever because its members are increasinglyhands-on leaders in their companies and the LPA message is more relevant to their success.

I am pleased to report that the past year has been another successful one for the LPA as we have had a number of accomplishmentsrelative to membership growth and the development of new programs consistent with what is outlined in the LPA Strategic Plan. While this Annual Report will provide further detail on the value LPA brings to its members, I would like to highlight a fewaccomplishments.

First, the SAMA Group of Associations, of which the LPA had been an affiliate, formally changed its name to the Laboratory ProductsAssociation effective July 1, the beginning of the fiscal year. The decision by the LPA Board, members of the Optical ImagingAssociation, and the SAMA Board to change the name was a logical progression and one that will better reflect the current structureand governance of the association. The OPIA, whose members are manufacturers of microscopes and related components, will be asub-group of the LPA and we are certainly delighted to have them affiliated with us.

Our Annual Meeting in Naples, Florida this past November was one of the best-attended meetings in years with an attendance of 108.We had 72% of our membership represented at the meeting, which is the highest percentage we have ever had for an Annual Meeting. This tells me how important this meeting program and the networking opportunities were to our members.

Our membership continues to increase. At the beginning of our fiscal year in July, there were 110 members in the LPA with 7 newcompanies joining during the year. Our retention rate continues to be high which speaks well to the satisfaction that members havewith the value the LPA provides.

The LPA conducted a Compensation and Benefits Survey in 2011—the first one in ten years with 46 companies participating. The solid participation certainly enhances the value of the survey and I want to thank all of you that participated.

The LPA was once again a Gold Sponsor at the 2011 LabAutomation Show in Palm Springs and continued to sponsor a networkingluncheon at the American Chemical Society’s Annual Meeting. The involvement in these events has been a great way to raiseawareness of the LPA to both end-users and potential members.

Lastly, Frost & Sullivan continued to improve the Annual Forecast and Analysis of the Lab Products Market with the addition of moremember and end-user interviews, which further enhances the value of the report.

The success of the LPA is attributable to a number of people. Our committees play an important role in this process and I want tothank all of our committee chairs and members for their efforts. I also want to thank the members of the LPA Board of Directors fortheir dedicated service as well as the LPA staff—Clark Mulligan, President and Lauren Hefner, Director of Membership, Marketing &Communications.

In 2012, the LPA will continue to increase the value of membership and meet the evolvingneeds of its members. We will be conducting a comprehensive membership survey andusing that input to ensure that our Strategic Plan is current and is a tool to propel the LPA forward in the areas of market information, networking, and education. Additionally,we will seek your input on how to expand event participation deeper within yourorganization in order to embed the value of LPA membership to the next generation ofbusiness decision makers.

I am confident that you will find your membership in the LPA to be highly worthwhile to you and your company. Please don’t hesitate to contact me, or the LPA office if youhave suggestions on how we can make your membership more valuable.

Sincerely,

Stephen Drozdow, LPA ChairmanPresident & CEO Wheaton
