Fellow Chamber Members

February leads us to the Annual General Meeting for the Kawartha Chamber of

Commerce amp Tourism and to the end of my term as President Partnerships in Growth amp Adventure is what we are all about and I would like to take this time to thank our members staff

board members and

committees for their dedication and commitment to our Chamber

One of the activities we focused on this year was to

review our strategic plan for 2013 ndash 2016 and reflect on our accomplishments to date From there we re-established our operational plan and since then we have been working on those

items identified as priorities We continue to make good progress against these and

this is a result of the strong leadership capacity we have in our General Manager Sherry Boyce Found

Our board too is very strong in terms of breadth and depth and together they bring a wealth of experience to the table I have been very fortunate to be

surrounded by this talented group of volunteers and I rely on their expertise candid input and

recommendations when it comes to making our business decisions

Partnerships have been a key focus for us and we have collaborated with many area associations such as the Buckhorn District Tourist Association and RT08 One of our board members has

been involved directly in each of these associations I thank them for taking on these additional volunteer duties

In May KPR DSB released their Long Term Accommodation report recommending that LDISS

be considered for closure Since then Chamber board members and staff have dedicated an enormous amount of time along with other community stakeholders to work

through this process The Chamber delivered two

presentations at the final public meeting on January 20th These were particularly impactful presentations and

my thanks to those who contributed to the content KPR staff have just released the report on the review process They are still recommending closure but it is the Trustees who will

make the final decision We remain hopeful that they will consider the bigger picture when addressing their

enrollment challenges

We have a solid membership base and our events continue to be well attended This speaks to a

strong staff and a creative Marketing amp Programs Committee who dedicate their efforts to meet our lsquoMembership to Valuersquo strategic direction Sponsorships also play a key

role in our success and there are many local businesses

that provide ongoing support and keep us strong I extend my personal thanks to Lori Neill and Lead The

Way Group of Clinics for being our Networking Event Sponsor for the past three years

Our website work is well underway recognizing that we needed to update to a

responsive and more

interactive site for members visitors and other stakeholders Watch for our new look in 2016 and if you have a business that would

benefit from managing social media more effectively we have an upcoming seminar in March that is designed to help you with this

Our BAH events create an

opportunity for networking face to face and what could be better than that when it

comes to meeting other members business owners and finding out more about our community in general

These events are one of my personal favourites and I am grateful to all of those businesses who have hosted us throughout the year

In closing itrsquos been a very

active year for your Chamber I am proud to have served as your president We welcome

your feedback look forward to serving you in 2016 and ask that you consider

becoming a volunteer or committee member and make us even stronger

Sincerely Kris Keller President

We have undertaken as a committee to perform a full review of the Constitution and By-Laws in 2016 We will be

paying particular attention to the direction of the strategic plan and will recommend any changes that are necessary to facilitate reaching the goals of the organization

PROVINCIAL PLAN REVIEW The Provincial Plan

Review is concerned with the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe the Greenbelt

Plan and the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation

Plan Stakeholders and communities were invited to provide input There are concerns that ldquosettlementrdquo areas would be favoured to receive provincial funding while

ldquonon-settlementrdquo ndash rural areas would be shut out In addition changes in land use policies have negatively impacted growth and led to closure

for many businesses

In efforts to have these concerns addressed Heather chaired a meeting in late June 2015 which was attended by businesses Provincial

Ministers and municipal politicians

LDISS IS OPEN

This year saw an

unprecedented challenge for much of our area KPRDSB announced the

recommended closure of the high school in Lakefield thatrsquos been the

heart of our community since 1952 A group of concerned citizens including Chamber staff and directors felt that we needed to get involved with the goal to save the

school as closure will directly affect businesses youth and families in our area

A stakeholder group was

formed in June and often met weekly throughout the summer to prepare

for the Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) meetings Literally hundreds and hundreds of hours have been put toward this cause and the response from the

community has been nothing short of amazing Many thanks to Chamber Board Director Cindy

Windover who represented the business

community on the ARC and to GM Sherry Boyce-Found who found a way to add another huge job to an already extremely busy schedule The group continues to work on the

communityrsquos behalf to ensure other options for LDISS are being heard

TRENT-SEVERN

WATERWAY

We continued to advocate for sustainable capital and

operational funding in conjunction with ldquoVoices for the TSWrdquo and the new Trent-Severn Waterway Working Group

We were pleased to note

that operating hours were maintained at 2014 levels and businesses noticed a further increase in economic activity as a result In June 2015 the Federal Government

announced additional capital funding for TSW projects some of which are currently underway

We assisted in the organization and provision of ldquoAll

Candidatesrdquo meetings ahead of the Federal Election With a change of Government in October we are awaiting further communication and

information on the new

Governmentrsquos priorities as

they relate to the TSW

SIGN BY-LAWS

The Committee continued its efforts regarding municipal Sign By-Laws

Trent Lakes noted our

concerns with the process and spent most of 2015 requesting input from and incorporating the publicrsquos input into the new draft by-law

An updated draft by-law

was presented at its November 2015 Council meeting where it was noted that many issues were addressed

OTHER BUSINESS

As the winter of 2014-2015 got underway many merchants in downtown Lakefield

expressed concerns about snow banks blocking access to their businesses and negatively impacting

sales Committee members conveyed these to the Township of

Selwyn requesting additional snow plowing during periods of high snowfall Council has since purchased new equipment for snow

removal on the sidewalks that should allow them to more frequently and efficiently remove the snowbanks

If you would like to be part of a group that

effectively advocates membersrsquo concerns we hope that you would seriously consider joining us Please contact a Committee member with your ideas and passion

Committee continued to advocate on issues that are of concern to our

membership I would like to express my gratitude to this hard-working team of dedicated members

2015 saw staff changes in both the Kawartha Chamber and ServiceOntario offices

Jasmine Sager began her maternity leave from the Chamber in April Jasmine will return to her role as Membership Coordinator in Spring 2016

Sylvia Dick resigned from her position as Engagement Coordinator in March 2015 after the daily bus service between Lakefield and Peterborough was cancelled leaving her with commuting challenges

Shannon Clark joined the Chamber in April 2015 as the Acting Membership Coordinator covering Jasminersquos maternity leave In August Shannon was offered a permanent position that she could not turn down and resigned from the Chamber

Stacey Sullivan

filled the Engagement Coordinator position in April 2015 Stacey had previously worked with the Chamber in the Fall of 2014 to assist with the Gala amp Awards of Excellence She

worked closely with Sylvia during that time making the transition a smooth one Stacey

maintains the front desk and prepares Chamber communications including the NewsFlash Newsletter and social media Stacey is also responsible for Accounts Receivable

Erica Milne took over the position as Acting Membership Coordinator for the rest of the maternity leave Erica worked for the Township of Selwyn for five

summers and was involved in planning the Jazz Art amp Craft Festival and Shamrock Festival Ericarsquos duties include planning of Chamber events

and responding to the needs of current and future members

Paula Edwards left the ServiceOntario office in the summer of 2015 for a new endeavor Kathy Duff joined ServiceOntario as a Customer

Service Representative in August Kathy brings experience from Kawartha Credit Union and General Electric

Many will recognize the smiling face of Deb Lowcock our Supervisor at ServiceOntario 2015 marked her 25th year with the Chamber We and the community are very fortunate to have such a dedicated and

knowledgeable staff member Thank you Deb

During the summer months the Chamber welcomed two students Jamie Jensen amp Anthony Taylor to assist with various tasks in the business office

We have met regularly this year as a Task Force rather than a Committee since we still have a vacancy and continue to try to recruit at least one more member

Our work this year has been aligned with supporting our Strategic Plan ndash specifically strengthening - Organization with Capacity

For year 1 ndash we have been working on stabilizing our staffing and focusing on recruitment There was a maternity leave to fill as well as another vacancy at the

Chamber office and at ServiceOntario as well as summer placements This included updating staff training new job descriptions

and evaluations for all staff

For the balance of the year we have been working on revitalizing our Committee and updating job descriptions for key positions ndash starting with General

Manager and then with the executive positions of the Board This will support succession planning and developing strong systems and processes that will build capacity

We plan to continue this work into

Year 2 and will meet 3-4 times over the coming year to complete these activities

The governance committee does not meet on a regular basis in most years In 2015 we had a series of electronic meetings to

facilitate a recommendation to the Board of Directors in regards to changes to the By-Laws These were slightly modified by the Board and circulated to be voted on at the next Annual General Meeting

We have undertaken as a committee to perform a full review of the Constitution and By-Laws in 2016 We will be

paying particular attention to the direction of the strategic plan and will recommend any changes that are necessary to facilitate reaching the goals of the organization

Committee continued to advocate on issues that are of concern to our

membership I would like to express my gratitude to this hard-working team of dedicated members

Public Policy The KCCT Public Policy

Committee continued to advocate on issues that are of concern to our

membership I would like to express my gratitude to this hard-working team of dedicated members
