100% of the proceeds go towards the programs at Via Services: First Step, Via West, and Altitude. Via helps adults and children with special needs achieve greater self-sufficiency and lead richer lives. In doing so, Via provides much needed connection and support for

parents and caregivers, helping make their own challenges less difficult and the celebrations more frequent.Visit www.viaservices.org for more information. Ticket purchases and sponsorships will be available soon.

VIA’S MOST IMPORTANT NIGHT OF THE YEAR!

We are hopeful that pushing this event to May will mean the availability of a COVID

vaccine and the opportunity to host this event in person.

Safety is our top priority, and if it is not feasible to

hold this gala as we typically do, then we will be making

this a virtual event.

Executive Message

3

Dear Families, Friends, and Members of the Community:

On behalf of our Board of Directors, leadership team, and staff, I am pleased to present the Via Services 2019-2020 annual report. In this report, we will share details of Via’s financial performance, significant milestones, highlights, and accomplishments for the year. We will also provide a preview of the plans and activities we are undertaking to advance our mission of helping people with disabilities and special needs achieve greater self-sufficiency and lead richer lives.

As you may well imagine, the past year was likely the most challenging of Via’s 75-year history. Like most organizations, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic is nearly impossible to overstate. Because our programs and services all involve direct contact with clients, Via has been effectively shut down since March 2020. At press time, the plan for returning to in-person services remains painfully uncertain.

When I began my tenure as Executive Director in October 2019, my goals were pretty straightforward: introduce myself to the Via community and gain a deeper understanding of your needs and your experience with us; continue rebuilding the Via West program; attract new Board members to replace some long-term members who would be terming off; expand Via’s donor base; and begin cultivating a more positive and inclusive corporate culture for the organization. We were making solid strides in each of these areas until around February when we began hearing about something called the Coronavirus. As you can see from the financial data included in this report, the impact has been devastating — for nonprofits like Via Services here in Silicon Valley and around the world.

In extraordinary situations like this, it is common for nonprofits to enter into survival mode and simply attempt to “get through” the crisis at hand. But I, along with the Board of Directors, agreed that we must not only survive, but thrive. In April, we quickly pivoted to begin delivering speech and occupational therapy services virtually via videoconference. These essential services will continue until it is safe to resume in-person therapy sessions.

I’m also pleased to report that we have embarked on a comprehensive strategic planning process to chart an exciting, new course for the future. I want to thank those who provided your much-valued feedback in our client survey. Your input is helping create a plan that will not only enable Via to withstand the next crisis, but also expand our services and the impact we can have on the lives of our clients and their families. We look forward to communicating our results in early 2021.

In the meantime, I wish you good health, safety, and opportunities to share joy during these most difficult of times. I also welcome you to reach out with any comments, suggestions, or offers of support. Together we will not just get through this, but do the vital, hard work to emerge as a stronger, more effective and valued partner for the next 75 years and beyond.

Sincerely,

Matt Bell Executive Director

From the Executive Director

Sources of Funding:

Our Mission: Via Services is a private, independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities and special needs achieve greater self-sufficiency and lead richer lives.

Our History: In 1945, two women saw a little boy sitting in a window every day, isolated from the world because of cerebral palsy. With permission from the boy’s single working mother, they carried the boy and his wheelchair down a steep flight of stairs so he could explore new places and spark his intellectual and emotional development. That act of generosity led to the creation of the Crippled Children’s Society, now Via Services, an organization that has continued to serve youth and adults with disabilities for 75 years.

Our Services: Altitude provides year-round camping experiences for boys and girls with social cognitive challenges to build social skills, independence, and self-confidence. We prepare our participants for the transition to young adulthood, future relationships, and the rest of their lives.

First Step provides developmental assessments for children birth through three years of age and therapy services for children up to age 13. We offer speech-language and occupational therapy services through the Early Start Program, Kaiser, private services, and contracts with local schools to address developmental delays and disorders in order to help each child realize their potential.

Via West provides residential respite care with weekend and week-long programs throughout the year. The children, teens, and adults who stay with us enjoy innovative programs and activities that include both learning and outdoor experiences, plus independent living skills and skill building activities that are specifically designed to improve self-sufficiency.

Highlights from Our Year

October 2019 – MATT BELL becomes the new Executive Director at Via Services. Matt has a great history with Via, having served as a Board member until 2014 when he changed careers and began work in the nonprofit sector at Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School. His previous work experience includes more than 30 years of marketing, business development, and most recently, nonprofit leadership. He also has the perspective of a parent of an individual with a developmental disability. All of this gives him the background to truly understand and partner with our amazing staff, families, and other stakeholders to create a wonderful environment for our organization.October 2019 – The 7th Annual FALL FESTIVAL is held at Via West Campus. Families enjoyed delicious carnival foods, live music from the Velvet Plum band, bingo, magic shows, pumpkin patch, costume contest, haunted house, petting zoo, and countless other games and activities. All of the funds raised that day went directly back to the programs of Via Services.December 2019 – Via Services is presented with a check for $20,000 from the AETNA VOICES OF HEALTH COMPETITION. We were one of five local finalists and your votes and support enabled us to win first place! The competition was designed to celebrate the nonprofit agencies that bring positive change to our communities, inspire us, and make us all stronger. Thank you to everyone that helped push Via to the top spot.

February 2020 — Our special guest speaker at the 25th Annual Via Ball was Adam Dolinko, Via Board Member and parent of former Via West participant Bryce Dolinko. Adam paid a moving tribute to his son and launched a capital campaign to renovate the art building on the Via West Campus — a place that held significant importance to Bryce, but that is in desperate need of improvements. All of the proceeds raised during the Via

Ball Fund-A-Need joined previous donations from countless family and friends of the Dolinko Family to create the Bryce Dolinko Memorial Fund. The current creative arts building, affectionately known by many as the “Aartvark,” will undergo a major renovation (including the addition of heating and air conditioning) and 1,000 square foot expansion. The new building will be the home of our arts and science programs.

Aartvark Capital Campaign

December 2019 – OPERATION SNOWFLAKE, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cupertino, brought joy to kids and adults with special needs. Our session for kids, teens, and young adults saw 13 tons of snow brought in, with the help of the Stevens Creek Quarry, to transform Via West Campus into a winter wonderland.February 2020 – Via celebrates 75 years with the 25TH ANNUAL VIA BALL, the most successful fundraising event in our entire history as an organization. Guests

enjoyed silent and live auctions, dinner by Villa Ragusa, a wild card raffle, dancing to the Velvet Plum band, and more. We are very thankful to all of our faithful

supporters, families, friends, and partners for making this an amazing evening. May 2020 – The GRANT SEASON ended with significant contributions from new organizations as well as continuing support from previous donors. Several large grants and donations contributed significantly to the growth and sustainability of new and existing programs. We would like to give a special thank you to:

New HappeningsHighlights (cont’d)

AAH Virtual Visits — On September 17, we launched virtual visits at the Smile Farm in a joint collaboration with Animal Assisted Happiness (AAH) and the San Jose Mercury News Wish Book. AAH has been a wonderful partner to Via West over the years — bringing their farm to us for the Fall Festival and countless Via West and Altitude sessions. Their mission is to enrich the lives of youth with needs through barnyard interactions, creating smiles throughout their AAH community. We are so excited to be able to partner with them once again. Families can join the zoom calls to watch, learn, and participate in barnyard interactions. Spring Events — Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions on gatherings and events, we have made the decision to postpone our 2020 events to the spring of 2021. The Fall Festival will now be a Spring Festival held on March 20, and the Charity Golf Classic will be held in April. The 26th Annual Via Ball will now take place on May 21. We are hopeful that pushing these events out will allow us to

Our current 2020-2021 fiscal year has posed many challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Planning programs and events is dependent on restrictions, county allowances, and the comfort level of our families, staff, and supporters. We know how difficult it has been, for our Via West and Altitude families in particular, to not have our programs to rely on, and we have been working diligently to provide alternative options. Below are some of the programs that we hope to be able to offer you soon, but, as with everything else, much of it will be shaped by how the pandemic continues to shift.

First Step challenges — met with collaboration and support

March 2020 – On March 16, 2020, Via’s First Step program was faced with a new challenge. With our clinic closed and staff working at home, we had to figure out how to work with children and their families without being in the same room with them. Within just a few days, the team was able to gather their assessment and therapy materials at their homes, collaborate as a team, and learn how to navigate online tools for video sessions. While partnering with San Andreas Regional Center, Kaiser, and our clients and their families, we were quickly able to implement systems for our speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and early interventionists to provide assessments and therapy services. Flexibility is key to the process as we navigate technology issues and schedules for therapists and families. We use whatever platform works best for the family and staff including TheraPlatform, Zoom, FaceTime, and WhatsApp. While we miss the direct contact of being “in-person” with our clients, we are grateful for the opportunity to see their faces and support their needs through a screen while they are safe at home with their families. Our team could not provide our assessment and therapy services without the support of the parents, grandparents, and care providers of our clients. We appreciate them and we thank them for their collaboration and flexibility as we deliver our services safely through telepractice!

Page 7: Annual Report - Home | VIA Services

7

host them safely and in person. Please know that your safety and wellbeing is our highest concern, and if it remains infeasible to host these events in person, we will look to alternative virtual options. Sensory Playgrounds at Via West Campus — Thanks to the generosity of our families and supporters on Giving Tuesday in December 2019, we raised over $15,000 to construct 4 new designated accessible sensory areas throughout Via West Campus. Each of these will include large and small motor activities, and interactive components like slides, swings, water tables, musical installations, and movement elements —

all of which will help to promote regulation, development, and the ability to adapt and integrate in new environments.

In-Home Respite Program —We are currently in the process of developing and receiving approval for a new personal care in-home respite program. Our proposed in-home respite service will be very different from what you are accustomed to as our enhanced programming will provide plentiful learning opportunities. Throughout the 52-week period, we will offer a wide range of educational units that are age and developmentally appropriate and include science, art, independent living skills, executive functioning, and more. Staff will be trained to work with your participant on skill-building and reaching their IEP and IPP goals.Social Saturdays & Sundays — We are hoping to launch Social Saturdays and Sundays, a shorter program on weekends based on our Via West community integration outings. These outings are so important as they provide our participants with an opportunity to interact with and become an active contributor to the community. The activities will

vary depending on the group’s ages, interests, and cognitive abilities, but some of the places we may visit are Happy Hollow Park and Zoo, Westfield Valley Fair Mall, San Jose History Park, and the San Jose Museum of Art. Meetup groups will be limited according to our local Covid-19 mandates. Via staff and participants who are able will wear a face mask at all times, and staff will carry hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Groups will maintain 6 feet of social distancing within the group and from others in the area, and they will follow all guidelines mandated by the meetup location. We are working with the regional center to determine an appropriate launch date in 2021, county guidelines permitting. This program will fall under our current out-of-home respite vendorization.

Virtual Programs — We are working on a way to virtually bring Via West and Altitude to you. You have enjoyed the lesson plans we have been sharing on our social media, but now, we would like to interact with and engage you. We will be working through various activity rotations and lesson plans taught by our Via West and Altitude staff. When launched, this will be a part of a larger ILS (independent living skills) program that we are hopeful to begin later in 2021.

The pandemic has forced us to re-envision what Via needs to be to withstand future public health and other disasters. How can we diversify our program offerings so we don’t place our eggs in too few baskets? What other services will our families and others in the special needs community need? How can we evolve – with the use of technology or other innovative approaches – to deliver our programs more efficiently, consistently to an even broader audience? We have decided to do a deep dive on these and other questions through a comprehensive strategic planning effort. Some may ask how we can possibly undertake this expensive and time-consuming process at this time. Given the immense uncertainly of our world at this time, and the many potential barriers and obstacles that may be in front of us, our answer, simply, is how can we not? Our staff and Board of Directors are as energized and committed as ever to Via’s mission of helping people with disabilities and special needs achieve greater self-sufficiency and lead richer lives. We know what our strengths are as an organization, and we will still concentrate on our core competencies while expanding them with the help of our constituents. Via has always been known for listening and responding to the needs of our families, and their involvement with this process will be crucial. What we are seeking now is a new vision of how we are going to achieve our mission in the future.

Strategic Plan

Celebrating 75 years of Via Services

EARLIER THIS YEAR, we were deeply saddened by the passing of Leslie Leger. Leslie was truly the heart of Via Services and she dedicated so much of herself to helping us fulfill our mission to enrich the lives of children and adults with disabilities and special needs.

Leslie was with Via for over 19 years, working most recently as the Vice President of Administration. Everyone that had the pleasure of working with her over the years knows how wonderful of a person she was and how much of a loss this is to her family, her friends, and to Via. She loved working at Via. She loved the mission, our families, and our employees, and she demonstrated this every day with her thoughtful actions and reassuring words. Leslie was more than just

compassionate — she also had an incredible brilliance that did not go unnoticed. Via was very lucky to have such an amazing person behind the scenes, and we could not have served the number of families nor have grown our vast programs without her.

Via Vice President Leslie Davis remembers how Leslie Leger was fondly referred to at the office as simply “Leger.” She says that “Over my lifetime, I have not had the pleasure of knowing anyone with a bigger heart or a kinder soul. And though her good work will live on forever, the world lost an exceptional individual in 2020.”

In 2021, Via will memorialize Leslie — or “Leger” — with a dedication and celebration. We will let you know when this is scheduled, so you can join us in remembering a remarkable quiet hero and share memories of her love, friendship, and many accomplishments.

In Loving Memory of Leslie Leger
