Little Flower Catholic School, an educational ministry of Little Flower Parish, exists to provide quality Catholic education for the Eastside and beyond as it has since 1926.

Little Flower is a compassionate, caring community for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade that celebrates the growth of each person. We welcome all families who share our philosophy and mission.

Our school provides a safe, nurturing environment, a challenging academic curriculum, with an emphasis on the arts, that prepares students for higher education and helps them develop into confident, responsible citizens. Following the words of St. Therese, our patroness, “Love is repaid by love alone,” we promote a dedication to the Catholic values of peace, justice, and service.

Dear Friends,

Little Flower School opened on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, with 334 students, an increase of 20 students over last year. Because Little Flower has grown by approximately 70 students over the last two years, this year there will be two classes in grades K-7. Instead of the traditional opening Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit, we opened school celebrating the Solemnity of the Assumption

of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

New teachers include: Mr. Gabe Elam (a 2007 graduate of Little Flower), Music; Mrs. Tisha Jackson, Grade 6; Ms. Emma Kalinowski, Grade 7; Mrs. Tiffany Moore, Grade 3; Mrs. Mary Rancourt, Grade 2; Miss Toni Santoro, Grade 4; Mrs. Mindi Spychalski, Grade 2; and Mr. David Wissel, Art. Last year, both Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Rancourt covered maternity leaves. Mr. Wissel substituted the entire last school year during Mrs. Laham’s illness. Finally, Kristin Denni has been appointed Assistant Principal. We congratulate Miss Denni and welcome all of our new teachers and welcome back our returning teachers.

Our student body is more diverse than it has ever been. 63% of the student body is Caucasian, 16% are Hispanic, 10% are African American, 8% are multi-racial, 1% is American Indian, and 1% is Asian or Pacific Islander. The biggest change is that the student body is 51% non-Catholic. This represents both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge will be to maintain and develop our Catholic identity. To do this, we will have to be more intentional about everything Catholic. The opportunity is to share our Catholic Christian faith with our students. Every student at Little Flower prays, participates in Liturgy, and studies religion.

Paradoxically, on Wednesday, August 16, I had the privilege of celebrating the funeral of Sr. Veronica Frederick O.S.F. at Oldenburg. Sister Veronica was 100 years old and the oldest member of the community. According to her obituary, “Sr. Veronica made a pact with God at age of 12 to enter religious life, and after consulting with her pastor, she entered the Oldenburg Franciscans on January 1, 1940, making final vows on August 12, 1944.” She taught at Little Flower from 1944 to 1954.

In my first years at Little Flower, when I attended the All-Class Reunion, more alumni asked me about Sr. Veronica than any other Sister or teacher. At the time, I had no idea who Sr. Veronica was. However, for the last several years, any time I visited Oldenburg, I visited Sr. Veronica in the infirmary. The last time I saw her, she was still very mentally sharp!

The reason I tell this story is to remind all of us of the tremendous impact that our teachers have on us. Little Flower Sisters and teachers have profoundly influenced the lives of students since 1926.

This issue of the newsletter, however, is dedicated to you who help make it possible for Little Flower Catholic School to carry on the ministry and mission which it has had since 1926. Our mission is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus to our students, to provide them with a quality Catholic education, and to help them become the best version of themselves in a secure and caring environment. Thank you to all who share time, talent, and treasure with Little Flower School. Your gifts of treasure provide tuition assistance to children whose parents could not otherwise afford a Little Flower education for their children and enable us to make improvements that tuition does not cover.

I close with the words of William Shakespeare in Twelfth Night: “I can no other answer make but thanks, And thanks, and ever thanks....”

Alumni NewsAt the conclusion of each school year, Scecina Memorial High School honors the top students in each of its four classes with the President’s Academic Excellence Award. This past spring, seven Little Flower alumni earned this recognition for their Top Ten Percent Class Ranking and a 4.0 or higher cumulative GPA.

Seniors Chris Duncan and Andrew Clegg were asked to choose a mentor who helped them achieve their goals. Chris chose his long time martial arts instructor: team USA Taekwondo coach Russel Northup. Andrew chose his first cross country and track coach, Little Flower parishioner Kevin Egan. Congratulations to all of the honorees on their hard work and high school academic achievements.

Alumni Visit Oldenburg to Honor Retired LF SistersFour Little Flower (and Scecina) alumni and music students paid a friendly visit to former LF music teachers Sister Ruth Ann and Sister Mary Hobart, now Sr. Mary Ann. The sisters are enjoying their retirement years at the Franciscan convent in Oldenburg. The group recalled good times, swapped stories, and learned about the sisters’ lives since LF. The alums entertained the sisters with a popular piano duet of the time: “Heart and Soul”. Our music mentors received harmonicas; we hope they’ll give us a rousing rendition of Dueling Harmonicas next time! It was a special surprise to also meet with Sister Martine, who taught first grade at Little Flower from 1955-1957. She has since served fifty years as a teacher in the Franciscan mission in New Guinea. She shared interesting stories about missionary life in the field. It was an honor and privilege to reconnect with these great teachers who served us at Little Flower in the 1950s and 60s. God bless each of these lovely ladies!

We recognize the powerful role our mothers and fathers played in the formation of both our character and conscience. As a Catholic school, Little Flower shares that ministry that our mothers and fathers began by continuing to develop both the mind and spirit of young students. Project Lead The WayThe Eastside Catholic School Partnership (ECSP) is a collaborative effort between four schools: Holy Spirit, Little Flower, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Scecina Memorial High School. Our purpose is to “Enhance the quality of PreK through Grade 12 education for a diverse population through a dynamic synergy of ideas, sharing of resources, and collaboration in marketing and educational planning among its member schools” (ECSP Mission Statement). The Board membership includes the pastors of the three parishes, the principals of the four schools, and the president of Scecina.

This year we pursued and received a grant for over $200,000 to purchase a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) program called Project Lead The Way. Scecina currently uses the Biomedical coursework of this program and has had great success with it. The program provides curricular kits, 4 each in grades K-5, and multiple options for middle school and high school. Each kit provides materials, hands-on problems/projects for students, and instructional guidance for teachers. Separate professional development is included for elementary, middle school, and high school teachers.

As their website states:

PLTW students engage in hands-on activities, projects, and problems that are reflective of real-world challenges. This compelling, real-world approach empowers students to learn essential, in-demand skills validated by the world’s leading companies, while also providing an invaluable connection between what students are learning in the classroom today and how it applies to the paths they’ll take in the future.

We are excited to implement this program at Little Flower Catholic School this year.

17The Little Flower Catholic School Annual Fund was launched in November 2016. The Annual Fund was still somewhat of a challenge since some of our donors were still finishing up pledges from our 2015 Capital Campaign. However, most donors finished their pledge by the spring of 2017, and our 2016-2017 90th Anniversary Annual Fund was definitely a success!

Our generous donors contributed $91,683.00 to our 90th Anniversary Annual Fund! Proceeds from this year’s Annual Fund were used in part to help fund tuition assistance. As promised, we have also established a teacher innovation grant fund. Teachers can now write grant requests from your donations that will assist them in bringing best teaching practices to their classrooms. Donations are also used to build a technology replacement reserve fund that will be used to replace unrepairable or out-dated technology.

In addition, we have re-opened three classrooms that have not been used for several years. These three were upgraded with new paint, flooring, and other physical improvements as needed.

In addition, more than $130,000.00 in restricted donations were received this past year. These gifts were restricted for technology, website, financial assistance, and scholarship funding.

Our Annual Fund to be launched in November 2017 will invite donations specifically for renovation to our building to meet our growth needs, continuing to update and upgrade our technology, and innovative ways to individualize instruction. We are so very grateful for you, our parishioners, alumni, and other donors, who recognize and affirm the past and present contributions of Little Flower School with your financial support. Our school would not be possible without you!
