Dear Friends and Supporters:

This past year was a time of transition for WomenVenture. A Strategic Planning Committee of current and past board members and key stakeholders was assembled to develop a strategic vision for the organization that considered the changes in the economy, changes in the demand for services, and potential future opportunities for WomenVenture. The goal was to develop a plan that would ensure the organization’s relevance and sustainability for many years to come.

At the end of May, the Board of Directors approved the recommendations of the Strategic Planning Committee. WomenVenture announced the narrowing of its focus, to support women-owned businesses by providing microloans, working capital, education and ongoing consultation through all stages of business. As we move forward, the organization strives to be the face and voice of women entrepreneurs and a resource for the community.

In the course of this work, WomenVenture has remained true to its organizational roots, leading a movement to support women in creating financial independence and jobs in their community. Within five years, WomenVenture expects to be a national model for supporting and growing women entrepreneurs.

We believe that this new approach allows WomenVenture to focus on its unique core competencies, towards creating a healthier and more viable organization. The work we do would not be possible without the generous contributions of our donors. INCOME SOURCES EXPENDITURES

OUR IMPACTLaura Ooley connected with WomenVenture in 2011 just as her mobile application development company, Appmosphere, was ready to hire additional employees. She worked together with a business consultant and secured a microloan that enabled Appmosphere to be considered a “bankable” business, worthy of further investment from traditional banks.

Appmosphere nearly doubled its staff in the six months that followed, and established its own business development team. To date, the company has created dozens of mobile applications on behalf of clients in a variety of industries.

Laura credits WomenVenture with helping Appmosphere clear a major hurdle at a critical time in its growth: “WomenVenture is willing to take a leap of faith with small business owners and provide them the funding they need to get their businesses off the ground or to the next level.”

For more than 30 years, WomenVenture has been dedicated to its mission and has provided more than 100,000 women with tools and resources to achieve economic success. In 2011-2012, WomenVenture helped start, expand or strengthen 113 small businesses in the Twin Cities through our entrepreneurial development classes and services. Those businesses created 85 jobs, an estimated $1.6 million in new salaried income, and generated more than $60,000 in individual income tax.

Through our microloan program, WomenVenture loaned $277,000 to 14 business development clients. At the end of the year, our outstanding loan portfolio was $675,000, and had a remarkable average client default rate of 4%.
