Alejandro, a recent retiree who hails from Colombia, has been dedicating his time to the St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Charitable Pharmacy as the primary Spanish-speaking volunteer. He has made a unique impact on many during his time at SVdP, especially with the Spanish-speaking community, by proudly helping uninsured people with low incomes that receive free medication to treat chronic and acute health issues.

As one of the few native Spanish speakers volunteering in the pharmacy, every Thursday Alejandro helps patients such as Fernando who make it a point to stop by for Alejandro’s assistance. Alejandro makes sure each patient receives proper medication, understands how to take the medicine and has all questions or concerns addressed by translating the pharmacist’s instructions.

SVdP in His South American Roots “My dad was a member of SVdP in Colombia when I was a child,” recalls Alejandro. “We used to give vouchers to very poor people in the suburbs and in the mountains. From that knowledge of the SVdP organization, I knew I wanted to be a part of something special here in the U.S.”

Alejandro, who has been in Madison for more than 25 years, reconnected to SVdP by making home visits as a member of the SVdP conference at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Middleton. He provided support and vouchers for people with low incomes who had recently moved to Dane County.

Following a family tragedy that altered his life plans, Alejandro retired after 25 years as an executive in charge of international operations at Hy Cite

Enterprises in Madison. This also lead him back to the organization that influenced him as a child.

“I retired early partly because I wanted to start helping others,” reveals Alejandro. “I was looking for new opportunities and saw the pharmacy story asking for Spanish-speaking volunteers in a SVdP newsletter and I thought, ‘Let’s give this a try!’ ”

La Familia de la Farmacia! (Pharmacy Family) Because he is bilingual, he can better communicate and create a comfortable environment for those who speak primarily Spanish, which is a large and growing number of pharmacy patients.

SVdP Managing Pharmacist Yolanda Tolson-Eveans, RPh, is grateful for Alejandro. “He has a wonderful spirit and is a great ambassador of the caring, campassion and humanity that SVdP sees in its volunteers, staff, members and donors,” she says. “He is part of the pharmacy family and extends that warmth and kindness to the clients, especially the Spanish speakers. Despite their situations, this is a place they can come and feel cared for and taken care of.”

“I had many opportunities to help others after retirement, but there were certain things I really wanted,” reflected Alejandro. “I wanted direct interaction with people to build relationships and feel that impact I had on their lives. I learned that St. Vincent de Paul helps our community in many ways, but the pharmacy has been my contribution.”

Alejandro, the Difference Maker One of Alejandro’s biggest fans is Fernando. “I’m from Peru and it is good to talk to someone from South America. We talk soccer,” says a beaming Fernando. “Alejandro and SVdP have helped because my wife has a defibrillator and needs very expensive medicine. I never had this help before.”

Alejandro says, “This service at St. Vincent de Paul has meant a lot to me. I have served those in need and have also met great friends in the pharmacy. I have created relationships on both sides of the counter.”

“A huge part of my experience is seeing that gratitude and happiness for being able to communicate with someone, especially in Spanish,” noted Alejandro. “Just to see them happy, makes me very happy.”

“I have come to understand well what puts the wind in our sails. It’s strong

community support from people like you.”

Dear Friends & Supporters:

You’ll find this annual report full of meaningful facts and figures. But in this note I’ll cite just one, and it’s not even one of our own St. Vincent de Paul statistics. It’s 78 percent. This, the CareerBuilder jobsite’s research tells us, is the percentage of American workers who report they live paycheck to paycheck. That suggests just how close many of us are to a brush with poverty – one medical crisis, one job loss, one break-up, one blown engine, one fine, one eviction away.

The year this annual report covers was my first providing leadership for the St. Vincent de Paul Society here in Dane County. So I’m pleased to tell you the ship is not only afloat, it continues to bring crucial goods and services to local people coping with poverty. Guiding a large and multi-faceted organization such as ours is not without challenges, but I have come to understand well what puts the wind in our sails. It’s strong community support from people like you – as this report attests – as well as a fine core staff and several hundred dedicated volunteers compassionately offering food, housing, furniture, beds, bedding, household goods, medicine and more to people who turn to us for a little help.

Those of us who, with your help, conduct the St. Vincent de Paul mission are blessed with work in which we can see – on a person-to-person basis – the direct benefit our efforts provide to some of Dane County’s most vulnerable households. It is helping to improve the lives of those thousands of individuals and families looking to us for assistance that makes what we do worthwhile. We have a short-hand version of our mission that our volunteers and staff take to heart: helping our neighbors in need. It’s this commitment that’s reflected, for instance, in the way our friend and volunteer Alejandro Vergara serves our Charitable Pharmacy patients, particularly many for whom Spanish is their first language (see Page 1).

You can get a good idea from the rest of this report’s pages just how it is we – and supporters such as you – help. Through our food pantry, pharmacy, housing programs, locker program, home visits and stores vouchering goods to households in need, we seek to honor the dignity of the people we are privileged to assist. Also, we offer individuals that assistance without regard to their creed, race, ethnicity, gender or other personal characteristics unrelated to the need we encounter. I am deeply grateful to all those who provide the support we rely upon to continue this work of helping our neighbors in need.

With warm regards,

Ernie StetenfeldCEO & Executive Director

St. Vincent de Paul Conferences in Dane County

How did you get involved with St. Vincent de Paul?We knew another volunteer who had been at SVdP for years. She talked about how fulfilling it was for her, and we were looking for somewhere to make a difference after recently retiring. It was a great match for us!

What is your role here at St. Vinny’s?Gary: I host clients in the food pantry and do food pickups (500-1,000 lbs. per week), but also stock and clean up in the back. I enjoy helping out wherever there is a need. We are both donors as well.Sue: I help restock and host, but there are options aplenty for you whether you want to work independently or work with others. It’s a great social outlet for Gary and me. We love the people who work and volunteer here.

Why do you give your time and financial resources to SVdP?Sue: We were both teachers, and liked the pantry because of all the people you get to meet here. Some clients never expected to find themselves here, but they do. As a volunteer, we have a chance to help and educate people.Gary: It is very inclusive, welcoming and organized. We joined independently, you don’t have to belong to a religious organization or church to feel included. It is easy to do and you can fit right in.

Favorite moment while making a difference here at SVdP?Gary: One of my favorite moments is being here with my grandchildren. We have young grandsons that visit every summer and want to come with us to volunteer. Diego speaks Spanish and gets to interact and help out other Spanish speakers. For young people, that’s amazing.Sue: There is an atmosphere of happiness and gratitude. A real spirit here that just doesn’t just happen, but is created.

Thank you to members of the 18 parish-based St. Vincent de Paul conferences and our youth service council who volunteer to help neighbors in need. Members grow in friendship and spirituality through service such as home visits, hosting at the pantry, registering clients at the Service Center, gardening at Lacy Garden or the Port, or collecting food and other donations.

Thank you to our 539 members who volunteered 16,097 hours.
