Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia2 | Annual Report 2017/18

The Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held in the Hinterland Room at the Marriott Resort & Spa in Surfers Paradise, Queensland Thursday 25 October 2018.

The meeting will start at 7.00pm, with drinks and canapes available from 6.00pm.

Our Keynote speaker for the evening is Critical Care Paramedic Peter Davidson. Peter was on board the first helicopter to reach survivors on the ill-fated 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Confronted by waves of up to 80 feet and wind gusts of 160kmh, Peter was winched down into these conditions to conduct one of the most testing rescues of his career. Peter will address the audience at the commencement of the AGM.

The meeting is open to all Members, guests and security industry professionals.

Annual General Meeting

National Conference & Trade ExpoI am pleased to invite you to the Master Locksmiths Association’s 2018 National Conference Trade Expo, the main industry event of the locksmithing industry in Australia and New Zealand. The event is being held at the Marriott Resort & Spa on the Gold Coast, a venue we have used previously, and one that has proven very popular with Members.

I encourage you to join us this year. Not only will you have the opportunity to find out about the latest industry trends, great new products and new technology, you will also have the opportunity to network with your industry friends and colleagues.

Highlights of this event include the announcement of the winner of the prestigious John Andrew Apprentice of the Year Award for 2018, proudly sponsored by LSC, Silca and ABUS, the awarding of Life Membership to former National President David Rees, the awarding of the A.L Chantry award to Cliff Forrester, the announcement of the winners of the MLAA’s Best Shop and Best Van awards, sponsored by S G Locks, and the announcement of the Future of Locksmithing prizes sponsored by Lock & Key, Keyline and EVVA.

The locksmithing industry is changing, with the advent of new technologies and a strong shift towards electronic security. Our Members are changing the way they do things in order to remain successful in what is a very competitive environment. And while it is great to reflect on the last 36 years of the MLAA in Australia and New Zealand, it is important that together we look towards the future.

Best regards, Peter Lloyd, National President

As part of Vision 2020 and our “consistency project” the MLAA - in July 2018 - commenced work on relaunching the main public facing asset of the Master Locksmiths brand, masterlocksmiths.com.au

The project is defined as a “relaunch” and not just an update or “re-skin”. That basically means that the website will get a complete overhaul, inside and out.

The new website will feature everything users expect from a modern website and it will promote you, the Master Locksmiths, even more prominently.

Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia4 | Annual Report 2017/18

Message from the National PresidentDear Business Members,

2017/18 has been a busy period for the Association. We have been working on a number of projects, while supporting our Business Members in their efforts to run a successful locksmithing Business.

Perhaps our most important project during this period was the development and launch of our new Trust Badge and Corporate Logo. The MLAA ‘triangle’ had served the Association well over many years, but it had become dated. We needed to give it a modern, fresh look, while retaining the trademarked shape, and we needed to develop a Corporate Logo to differentiate the work of the Association from the Business activities carried out by our Business Members. Our new Trust Badge and Corporate Logo were unveiled at our Annual General Meeting in October 2017, and many of our Business Members have already started to use the new Trust Badge.

There has been a much sharper focus on marketing and communications activities, with Digital Marketing & Communications Manager Ben Jahnke continuing with his efforts to raise awareness of the MLAA, to educate the general and professional public about the services available from a professional locksmith, and why they should use an MLAA Member.

The Board met four times in 2017/18. And while Vision 2020 remains the focus, the Board will be meeting in February 2019 to develop a Strategic Plan for the Association for beyond 2020. Our industry continues to change at a rapid pace, and it is essential that the Board develops the necessary strategies to allow our Business Members to successfully embrace these changes.

Current Directors Andre Kleinig (South Australia/Northern Territory), Steve Arias (Western Australia) and Michael Rechenberg (Queensland) have been re-elected unopposed and we thank them for committing to serve as Directors for the next two years.

New Zealand Director Mike Begg and New South Wales/ACT Director Jim Fisher have both completed the first year of their terms, and we thank them for their efforts.

There was a slight reduction to the Branch and Member Meeting program in 2017/18, with four Branch Meetings in Victoria, three in New South Wales, three in Queensland, three in South Australia, three in Western Australia and one in New Zealand. No Regional Meetings were held.

Attendances are still mixed. In some cases they are very poor, and we encourage Members to do their best to get to the meetings.

We engaged guest speakers for two of our supplier hosted Branch Meetings:

› Tommy Raudonikis was a real hit at the NSW/ACT Branch Meeting held at LSC in Silverwater

› Trevor “the Axe” Gillmeister proved to be very popular at the Queensland Branch Meeting held at LSC in Bowen Hills

We also engaged speakers for four breakfast meetings:

› Former Olympian Nicole Livingston in Victoria

› Former Australian cricket captain Kim Hughes in Western Australia

› Former NRL player Sione Faumiani in Queensland

› Former AFL coach Graham Cornes in South Australia

There are a number of people I would like to thank. Former Queensland Director Cliff Forrester continues to administer the John Andrew Apprentice of the Year program. Cliff prepared the safe locks, wrote the General Knowledge questions and assessed all the competitors.

In addition to this, I would also like to thank Michael McGovern, Stu Neal, Colin Moss, Ricard Knowles (LGA) and representatives from the TAFE’s, who along with Cliff, met with IBSA’s Fraser Nelson to discuss amendments to the current Training Packages. Their efforts were an important initiative in ensuring our Apprentice Training is modern and up to date.

Another person who needs to be acknowledged is Fraser Burns. Fraser continues to administer the MLAA Trade test in New Zealand, and he also provides great support for our annual Training Event in New Zealand.

Our financials for 2017/18 have been available to Business Members since the end of August, and the details are published in this Annual Report. The surplus of $49,454 is consistent with the budgeted surplus of $46,869.

It is worth noting that even though we managed to achieve our budgeted surplus, the Association needed to fund the following two events:

› NZ Trade & Training Event, Auckland ($42K)

› National Conference & Trade Expo, Geelong ($43K)

In addition, the Board authorised several items to be funded from our reserves:

› The development of MLAA.org.au ($7,698)

› NZ Training Event, Rotorua ($15,765)

The second and final LOKtouch write off, and the removal of LW32’s and LW33’s from the market ($39,799) was also funded from our reserves.

There are lots of things on the agenda for 2018/19. These include:

› Ensuring our National Conference on the Gold Coast is a success

› A major overhaul of www.masterlocksmiths.com.au

› Administering the 2018 John Andrew Apprentice of the Year competition

› Updating the current SOP’s available to Business Members

› Continuing to lobby the various Licencing authorities to get a level playing field for locksmiths

The role of the Board is very much about Strategy and Governance, and ensuring the National Support Office has the necessary resources – people and funds – to work on initiatives that assist and support our Business Members.

2017 National Conference & Trade Expo

2018 New Zealand Training Event

The 2017 National Conference & Trade Expo was held at GMBHA (formerly Simmonds) Stadium in Geelong Victoria, and the Mercure in Geelong, Victoria.

The level of support from our Members was excellent, and the use of separate venues (a little under a kilometre apart) did not affect numbers at either the expo or the Gala Dinner and Awards night.

13th Beach links course was the venue for golf. Warren Nelson (LSC), Michael Avis (ASSA ABLOY), Johan Gantin (ASSA ABLOY) and Frank Koedyk (Goldfields Locksmiths) braved the mosquitos to win the day.

Our Trade partners did a brilliant job in setting up their booths. The floor to ceiling windows of the expo hall provided a great view of the playing arena, and a sweeping view across Corio Bay as the back drop. The Friday night carvery continues to work well, allowing exhibitors and delegates more time to talk without having to leave the expo.

Around 300 people attended the Gala Dinner and Awards Night.

Local identity Ian Cover was our MC for the evening, with fellow Coodabeen Greg Champion providing the entertainment.

Highlights from the evening included the announcement of Zachary Winslade from Independent Locksmiths in Parramatta, New South Wales as the winner of the John Andrew Apprentice of the Year competition, and the awarding of Life Membership to Norm Axford and Cliff Forrester.

Inaugural National President and Life Member David Stewart announced Danny Benaim from The Locksmith Store in Bendigo, Victoria as the winner of the Hyundai i30.

Other highlights included the announcement of the Future of Locksmithing Award, sponsored by Lock & Key, and the winners of the Best Shop and Best Van, sponsored by S G Locks.

We are very fortunate to get fantastic support from overseas. At Geelong were Fabrizio Lante and Enrico De Poli from Silca (Italy), John Hyslop from Borg Locks (United Kingdom) and Rudolph Wong from Borg Locks (China).

Just over 100 locksmiths, apprentices and security professionals attended the annual New Zealand Training event at the Novotel in Rotorua on 23 & 24 June, 2018.

A great mix of skills training and business information was on offer. Highlights included the Auto Q&A Workshop hosted by Mike Begg, with a panel of experts comprising Jeremy Phillips, Justin Bonzair and Chris Jones. Life Members Fraser Burns and Cliff Forrester were on hand to run skills sessions, and Luke McGuiness once again helped delegates hone their picking and impressioning skills. Business sessions on Consumer Law and Workplace Health & Safety provided Business owners/managers with some great information that they could immediately use in the workplace.

The support from our industry partners Athco Locksmith Supplies, Remote King, ASSA ABLOY, WH Software, LSC, Baber Lock & Key, Australian Lock Company and Salto Systems helped make the event a great success.

APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR

The MLAA’s annual John Andrew Apprentice of the Year Competition (JAAOTY) recognises the next generation of high achievers in the locksmithing industry in Australia and New Zealand.

The award also acknowledges the mentoring provided by the Apprentice’s “Master”. For an Apprentice to win the competition, a good “Master” who acts as a trainer and a mentor is essential.

The competition is always very tight, with Zachary Winslade from Independent Locksmiths in New South Wales the winner for 2017. Zach was trained at Sydney TAFE and mentored by Independent’s Keiran and Sean McGovern.

The PrizeLSC, Silca (Italy) and ABUS (Germany) continue to be major supporters of the Award. The prize is a trip for both the winner and their master to Europe to visit the Silca factory in Italy and the ABUS factory in Germany.

In May 2017, Zach Winslade and Keiran McGovern made the 23 hour journey

from Sydney via Dubai to arrive in Europe, where they were greeted by Tom Stokes from LSC.

Their first visit was to the Silca factory in the region of Treviso, north eastern Italy, at the base of the Austrian Alps.

Zach and Keiran learnt a lot at the Silca factory and enjoyed getting a great insight into how each key blank makes its way from production in Italy, across the world to being cut in our workshop in Parramatta. The boys spent 2 days at the Silca Factory, but they also found the time to be spoilt with the classic Italian cuisine and Prosecco, famous in this region.

The second leg of their journey took them to the middle of Germany, near the border to Holland. This was followed by a trip on the autobahn to the area of Dortmund where they were shown around the original factory where ABUS first began production in 1924.

The boys were very pleased to learn about the rich history of ABUS, and they were impressed with the modern culture instilled in the company today.

The trip provided Keiran and Zach with a great insight into how locksmithing differs from country to country, and it became clear to them that locksmiths in Australia and New Zealand are perhaps the most skilled Worldwide. In Europe, the factories perform and control many of the activities performed by our locksmiths.

Both Zach and Keiran would like to thank Fabrizio Lante and his team at Silca, Andre Winterhoff and Christian Bremicker and the team at ABUS, and the event sponsor of the trip LSC, with special thanks to Tom Stokes from LSC who really made the trip an enjoyable and unforgettable experience.

The boys highly recommend the Apprentice of the Year competition, and would like to encourage every Apprentice to seriously consider entering the competition.

It takes a special Apprentice to win the prestigious John Andrew Apprentice of the Year award, and when this Apprentice is one of your students, it is extra special.

All the teachers at TAFE NSW were delighted when Zac Winslade from Independent Locksmiths was announced as the winner of the award for 2017. This is a fantastic achievement. Zac is a terrific young man, and we look forward to watching Zac as he further develops his already impressive skill set. We would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Independent Locksmiths, particularly Keiran and Sean McGovern, for their support of Zac in a mentoring capacity. The support of the Business is a critical element of an Apprenticeship

John Barnes & Company Pty Ltd was founded by John Franklin Barnes in 1949. The original location was on the corner of Swanston and Little Lonsdale Streets in Melbourne’s CBD. John Barnes was a born entrepreneur. He was one of the first Victorian distributors of the famous Victor lawn mower, and he introduced the DeHavilland Jet Boat to Australia.

In 1951, Ron Roberts joined the company as John’s business partner, and the two business partners quickly developed a strong understanding of the direction they wanted to take the company. In the 1950’s, the locksmith industry was relatively new. With great support from local manufacturers such as Ogden Industries, Astra Hardware, Dalco and R.B Davies, the company created one of the first retail outlets for security products in Melbourne.

After a number of successful years, the company relocated to its current site at 576 Elizabeth St in Melbourne. This site became the first auto drive-in workshop in Australia.

Large volume key cutting became an integral part of the company’s clientele, with partnerships with automotive and government and industry clients requiring thousands of keys per order.

In 1974, Ron Roberts Sr. acquired total control of the business, and in 1977 the business opened a second shop in East Bentleigh. Today the business is run by second and third generation members of the Roberts family. Colin still looks after the Elizabeth Street store, while Ron Jnr and his two sons Ron and Kane take care of operations at the East Bentleigh store.

Integral to the continuing success of the Company is a strong emphasis on its original core values to provide premium customer service combined with trust and integrity. This has allowed John Barnes & Company Pty Ltd to build and maintain lasting business partnerships.

Doug Wickham left school in 1959 and joined D. Hyauiason & Sons, who were Locksmiths and Safe manufacturers est. 1880, and completed a 5 year apprenticeship. Doug became very involved in doing all the safe work created by the ‘safe blowers’ back in those days. This involved a large amount of work with the Police department, supplying evidence as an expert witness in court cases ranging from burglaries to safe break ins.

In the 1960’s Chubb Lock and Safe purchased Hyauiason’s and Doug got involved with doing safe lockouts all over the country, and became Chubb’s Chief Safe Engineer, specialising in installing vault doors.

Doug then left Chubb and, with his wife Shona, established Auckland Safe & Lock Servicing Ltd in Mt Roskill in 1975. Doug continued doing work for the NZ Police, and was involved with major incidents such as the Rainbow Warrior sinking and the Erebus crash.

Auckland Safe and Lock Servicing is very much a family business, with sons Mike and Brendan, and daughter Stephanie, all actively involved in the Business.

Doug is New Zealand’s leading safe and vault expert, and a World-class safe manipulator and safe technician. His services continue to be in high demand from the banks, Government departments, the police and the military. Mike and Brendan are both fully qualified locksmiths and safe technicians, having been trained by Doug.

Doug originally joined the NSW Branch of the MLAA and was trade tested by Bruce Hildebrandt and John Andrews. Doug is also one of the founding fathers of the MLAA in NZ. In 1981 Doug, along with Rae Mortimer, Robert Bull, Jim Beveridge, Rex Soper, Wally Reid, Murray Burns and Sid Pemberton was responsible for signing the documents that ultimately led to the establishment of the New Zealand Branch of the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia Limited on 18 October, 1981.

Doug was awarded Life Membership of the Association in 1998.
