MISSION

TEEN ARTS PROGRAM (TAP)

Teens access NYC cultural institutions and explore the arts as a potential academic or professional goal through museum visits, internships, and portfolio mentorships.

ART PARTIES

FAMILY FREE ARTS DAY

FREE ARTS DAYS (FAD)

Volunteer as a family. Each family is paired with one or two children for a day of collaborative art making and play.

Youth ages 6-13 pair with volunteer buddies at a “pop-up” arts festival for a day of art-making and exploration with a supportive adult mentor.

Free Arts NYC provides underserved children with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential.

The Museum/Studio Visit Program creates opportunities for teens to have access to leaders in the NYC visual arts community. Youth and mentor pairs meet monthly, to tour artists’ studios, participate in creative workshops, and build visual literacy. 2016-2017 artist visits include Matthew Day Jackson, Curtis Kulig, Rashid Johnson, and Taryn Simon.

Adults-only volunteering. Help us prepare materials that will be used in our programs across the city.

Served 32,000 children and famlies and engaged 18,000 volunteers

100% of Teen Portfolio Mentees areaccepted to a high school of the choice

Nearly 50% of Free Arts NYC youthare currently living in a shelter

We strive to provide the highest quality programming, and measure our effectiveness with two evaulation systems all of which are proven to contribute to long-term gains such as thriving, decreased risk-taking behavior, and increased academics

A FEW HIGHLIGHTSJONATHAN HOROWITZ INSPIRES ANNUAL BRANT FOUNDATION FREE ARTS DAY On October 1, 2016, The Brant Foundation welcomed 91 children from the Department of Homeless Services to Greenwich, CT for a remarkable day filled with art, fun, fresh air and much needed personal attention. Children created self-portrait mirrors, tote bags, passion projects, duct tape food, and collaborative glitter flags all inspired by Horowitz’s exhibit.

ANNUAL ART AUCTIONOur 17th Annual Art Auction on April 27, 2017 hosted by Richard Prince, celebrated the late Glenn O’Brien. Over 300 guests attended for cocktails and the auction which was followed by an intimate dinner hosted by Fendi.

JUNIOR BOARD AUCTIONFree Arts NYC’s 4th Junior Board Auction took place on November 10, 2016 at Fort Gansevoort Gallery. Guests enjoyed an a silent auction comprised of food, music and travel experiences, in addition to a selection of contemporary artworks curated by Uprise Art.

ADONAI’S STORY: SKY’S THE LIMIT “WHEN I FIRST HEARD THE NEWS, I fell off my bed because I knew I was going somewhere.”

Last year, through Free Arts’ Portfolio Mentorship program, Adonai applied and successfully gained entrance into the High School of Art and Design. He credits his mentor, Aubrey, with preparing him for the rigorous process and keeping him on track for deadlines. “She was concerned for me, but it never turned into frustration.”

Adonai entered Free Arts in 2012 with tremendous artistic talent and quickly took to Artist Studio Visits. “I loved the diverse cast of artists.” He spent time with Rashid Johnson, Jack Early, Dan Colen, Hanna Liden, and many more, feeling inspired each time because he learned “artists are regular people doing what they love.”

This love for art fuels his desire to pursue illustration and animation as a career. Citing animators like Hayao Miyazaki and Bryan Konietzko as influences, he feels prepared for the journey. “Textbooks and videos can only help you so much, Free Arts helped me learn by doing. I have a much better idea of what artists go through before they put their work in a gallery.”
