PRESIDENT’S REPORT I am very pleased to report on another successful year for our club. Despite various

challenges, such as the very extreme weather conditions, during which our course

generally remained playable, we ended the year with a positive trading surplus. The

surplus provided funds for debt repayment, machinery replacement and various

improvements to the course and clubhouse. In this respect our club continues to move

from strength to strength.

The positive trading result is testament to the rigorous operational and financial controls

exercised by our Management Committee and Club staff. During the year two new staff

were recruited for key positions; Ben Finn as Head Green Keeper and Glenn Robinson as

Golf Services Manager. We can be confident that both Ben and Glenn will continue

improving the delivery of services in their respective areas.

The implementation of a new Xero accounting software package during the year

provided some challenges for the staff involved and I thank both Brian Chapman and

Scott McGufficke for their diligence and perseverance in bringing the new system on line.

At end of August 2017, prior to renewals, our total membership peaked at 637 which

included 464 equivalent full playing members. This continues to be a reflection on the

standard and presentation of our course and the environment we provide as a

welcoming, friendly and well organised club. Whilst initial renewals were slightly down on

previous years the last few months has seen a surge in new memberships and we are

confident that our membership numbers will be maintained or exceeded.

During 2017, with funding from Infinity Trust, NZ Community Trust and NZ Racing Board, we

were able to proceed with Stage 2 of the irrigation upgrade project. The new irrigation

was installed on holes 10, 11 and 12 and the main extended through to the 18th fairway

ready to pick up the next stage on holes 16, 17 and 18. In addition to the financial support

from the gaming trusts, for which we are extremely grateful, we are also indebted to our

members who provided the voluntary labour that enabled the project to proceed. Over

the last few months the benefit of the irrigation upgrade has been very apparent on the

completed holes.

The decision to operate our food and beverage services in-house has proved a positive

move, in terms of both quality of product and service, with profit from both food and

beverages significantly adding to our year-end result. Increased promotion and utilisation

of these services, including our clubhouse facility, are a significant opportunity for

increasing revenue that we must take advantage of.

Glen Mitchell and Peta Rogers and their respective golf committees delivered another

well organised golfing program. The organisation required for all club and interclub

events, as well as various regular weekday events, cannot be underestimated and we are

very grateful to all members who were on golf committees or otherwise assisted or were

involved with the organisation of golfing activities and interclub. Congratulations to the

winners of all club trophy events; especially our club champions in all divisions.

Despite not securing any trophies all our interclub teams performed well and maintained

our reputation as a competitive and professional club. My thanks to all players for their

time and effort representing our club.

During October, in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship, we were

honoured to host the Proud Partners golf day which involved visiting members from

Augusta National GC, The Royal & Ancient GC and the Asia Pacific Confederation. Our

thanks to our members who turned out to caddy for the players as well as our staff and

members who contributed to make the day a success. Combined with Tourism NZ’s

ongoing promotions, this national and international exposure generated increased green

fee income during 2017 and will continue to enhance our reputation as a “must play”

course for visiting golfers.

We are fortunate to have diligent, professional and committed staff who contribute to the

ongoing success of the club. Our thanks to Leo Barber and the staff team for their efforts

during the year.

Last, but most importantly, a very sincere thanks to the silent army of volunteers who so

generously give their time for various tasks around the course, the clubhouse and in the

office. Your support and enthusiasm are invaluable and greatly appreciated.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Introduction:

I am pleased to present the 2017 report on behalf of the Management Committee.

Again, we have achieved a trading surplus enabling us to reduce our debt as we enter

2018.

Revenue from visiting players and groups on the course and for clubhouse functions is an

essential part of our income. It enables us to keep increases in subscriptions to a minimum.

Thank you to all members for their tolerance and patience at times when these events

may cause disruption or inconvenience.

Financial Summary:

The 2017 financial year resulted in a trading surplus of $78,000.

Overall debt was reduced by a further 6.5% - this has now reduced 49% since 2007.

Page 7: Annual Report Final 2017 - live.golf.co.nzlive.golf.co.nz/Email/Storage/05d373c2e2a54cd8bfb241384531b2ee/… · Warren Dumelow Ray Jones Adam Lawlor Women’s Golf Committee Heather

Subscription revenue was down 4% reversing the trend of the previous year. Our peak

“Full Playing Equivalents” never reached the level of 2016 and as a result our starting base

for the 17/18 subscription year was lower. We have made gains towards the end of 2017

and start of 2018 however.

Green fee income was up an impressive 22% on 2016 despite the poor summer and wet

winter. International visitors grew in line with NZ Tourism’s golf strategy and events like the

Lions Tour and Asia Pacific Amateur assisted.

Corporate income/Course Hire and Sponsorship was up 11% on budget in an ever

increasingly challenging environment. We continue to seek national events such as the

Strokeplay that we will host in 2018 which provide valuable on course and off course

revenue. We are also fortunate to maintain a strong stable of local businesses that

support our club for which we are thankful. We continue to ask members to repay this

loyalty by considering these valued sponsors when making your purchasing decisions.

This was the first full year of trading for Food and Beverage since the decision was made to

take the catering “in-house”. Profits were 59% up on budget ($81,000) and credit must go

to the F&B team led by Victoria Meier for their great work in this area. The challenge will

be to maintain these gains in 2018.

The net cost of providing Golf Services was $23,000 – in line with budget.

Sundry and other income was up 21% on budget, albeit on modest numbers.

Sundry income includes lounge rental, club and cart storage, firewood sales, tournament

income and donations.

House expenses were down on the previous year and better than budget by $4,000 with

any improvement work mainly confined to that of maintenance. “Other” expenses

include, security, sky, signage and telephones.

Course expenses were marginally down on the previous year and under budget with

sustainable practices assisting plus a period of delay between the replacement of exiting

staff.

Administration costs were level with 2016 and close to budget. We incurred additional

costs associated with rebates, with some interest free loans rolling over onto a rebated

scheme. This was still a saving however compared with the cost of commercial borrowing

and our thanks to those members who have assisted in this area which we have

endeavoured to structure to be mutually beneficial. There is an opportunity for anyone

who wants to sign up to this scheme to contact the General Manager for further details.

We had some minor accounting costs as we shifted our software to Xero and insurance

rose again and has risen even more this year. “Other” includes Representation (interclub)

and bank charges (electronic transactions) which have become a major expense.

Profit from 2017 will be allocated to Debt Reduction and Capital Expenditure.

Gaming grant income for “Operating Costs” was non-existent this year as the result of a

decision to prioritise grant applications for capital costs this year, securing $65,000 of

funding towards the irrigation system upgrade. Our sincere thanks go to the Infinity

Foundation, NZ Racing Board and New Zealand Community Trust for their generous

contribution towards assisting our club.

Page 8: Annual Report Final 2017 - live.golf.co.nzlive.golf.co.nz/Email/Storage/05d373c2e2a54cd8bfb241384531b2ee/… · Warren Dumelow Ray Jones Adam Lawlor Women’s Golf Committee Heather

Conclusion:

2017 was another positive year for the club, with our trading surplus being a 75% increase

on the previous year.

We were able to complete stage 2 of the course irrigation so that over 50% of the course

now has full fairway watering. The tent had a full roof replacement and the carpet in the

clubhouse lounge was replaced. All these achievements were made possible by the

generous efforts of our numerous volunteers and other member assistance. We also

replaced one of the Workman vehicles on the course from our capital fund.

2017 gave us weather to remember. The wet winter and summer of 2016 were followed by

a winter of record rainfall - followed by a record dry, humid summer, all of which

presented some interesting challenges to our greens staff. While we tolerated some

persistent water features the course remained open and playable – something that few, if

any, other courses were able to provide to their members.

As mentioned earlier, membership took a very small decline over the year and we are

considering some alternative types of membership to cater for changing world wide

trends.

Of particular interest in 2017 was the October visit by the Chairman of Augusta National,

Mr Fred Ridley, accompanied by fellow Augusta members, members of the R & A and of

the Asian Confederation, here for the Asia Pacific amateur event. Mr Ridley was most

complimentary of our course, the hospitality put on by the club and the volunteer caddies

for their round. We are waiting patiently for the return invitation to play Augusta National.

It is not unusual to receive comments from international guests, expressing surprise at the

amount of volunteer work carried out by our members. We rely on this support and I thank

all those volunteers who give their time to help with maintenance and repairs to fairways

and tees, general course maintenance, gardening, irrigation installation and clubhouse

maintenance and upgrading. The camaraderie and banter among some of those groups

has to be experienced to be believed.

To our Men’s and Women’s Club Captains, Glen and Peta, thank you both and your

committees for the programmes you have run throughout 2017. It is encouraging to see

the introduction of four additional mixed competitions for 2018 as well as the combination

of some of the Men’s and Women’s Committee meetings – both positive steps towards a

unified club.

Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club was the proud recipient of the Kapiti Sports Club of The

Year award in the Pak’n Save Kapiti Sports Awards. The attributes taken into account for

the presentation of this award reflect the performance, achievements and contributions

by members as well as management and staff. It was also extremely satisfying to have

Paraparaumu Beach once again returned to the position of number 97 in the top 100 golf

courses in the World.

In 2017 the Management Committee undertook a review of the club’s Strategic Plan and

addressing a Governance Manual, covering policies and procedures. Both of these

documents are nearing completion.

Page 9: Annual Report Final 2017 - live.golf.co.nzlive.golf.co.nz/Email/Storage/05d373c2e2a54cd8bfb241384531b2ee/… · Warren Dumelow Ray Jones Adam Lawlor Women’s Golf Committee Heather

Also, in 2017 a focus group was set up under the leadership of Ken Harris with a cross-

section of members to review several aspects of the the club’s operations with a view to

increased clubhouse use and thus increased revenue, improved visitor experience and

increased social activities for members. Good progress has been made by an enthusiastic

group.

I wish to thank all our staff - greenkeepers, shop, administration, and food and beverage -

for their efforts through the year, their cooperation, positive attitude and team work.

I thank Brian Chapman for his tireless performance in the role of Secretary/Treasurer – very

much appreciated. Thank you, Brian.

Our President, Paul De Bernardo, is retiring from his position after 6 years. Paul has been a

highly valued member of the Management Committee as well as performing the various

other duties the position entails. He has also been a driving force behind the installation of

the course irrigation. Thank you, Paul, on behalf of the Management Committee for your

contribution to the club and for your advice. Personally, I will miss Paul’s role as a

“sounding board” from time to time.

Finally, I wish to thank the members of the Management Committee and Leo Barber, our

General Manager. We are fortunate in having a constructive positive committee, working

as a team and I thank all the committee members for their cooperation and their

contributions in 2017. Those thanks extend also to those others who have provided

assistance and advice when requested.

We look forward to further success and achievements in the coming year.

Chairman

MEN’S CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT

2017 will most likely be remembered as the “Visitors Year” with two major International

sporting events and the ramping up of the governments golf tourism campaign bringing a

large number of overseas green fee players to our course throughout the year. Many

supporters of both the British and Irish Lions rugby tour and the the Asia Pacific Amateur

Championship hosted by Royal Wellington played at Paraparaumu Beach whilst in the

region and thanks are given to all members for sharing the course and in many cases

playing with and entertaining many of those who visited.

The weather also played a big part in defining 2017 with long periods of heavy rain and

the resulting casual water that refused to drain away by natural means frustrating play for

lengthy periods throughout the year. We weren’t alone as the unusually wet weather

patterns were nationwide with many courses being frequently closed with many placing

restrictions on use of motorised carts and trundlers.

Blessed with a sand based course our links were never closed and there was only one day

where we prohibited the use of carts as a precaution against potential damage to our

playing surfaces.

Notwithstanding the above external factors, we again delivered a full playing program for

our members alongside hosting interclub, the annual Nomads gathering, numerous

charitable events, the Tommy’s ProAm, NZ Open qualifying and the like.

In early 2017 we were visited by English professional golfer Maurice Bembridge the former

Ryder Cup player who played in New Zealand many times in the 1960’s and 1970’s and

still a joint holder of the Course Record (62) at Paraparaumu Beach. Now in his 70’s it was

an honour to host him at the club and to hear his recollections of 50 years ago and his

thoughts on how the game has progressed since those times.

Congratulations to winners of the Men’s trophies as recorded elsewhere in this Annual

Report.

Whilst support for some of the more traditional club trophies has declined in recent years

the Men’s Committee has made every effort to tweak and tune these events to reflect our

changing societal patterns and will continue to do so wherever possible.

Special congratulations to Cameron Elers, Chris Hunt and Matthew Richards who were our

Men’s Open, Intermediate and Junior Champions respectively. They also successfully

combined to win (and retain for the club) the Wellington Golf Champion of Champions

trophy contested at Masterton.

Again, it was very pleasing to see how well supported our mixed events were throughout

the year and in 2018 there will be a further 4 mixed events included in the playing

program reflecting their popularity with all members.

The large number of men who enjoy playing competitive golf is reflected in there being 5

weekend and 1 mid-week Interclub teams with our Otaki/Duncan Cup team again

performing with distinction, but not being able to retain the silverware secured in 2016.

With a good number of young golfers coming through the Junior Academy and many

now playing in the Men’s Interclub competition we can confidently look forward to

success at all levels in the years ahead.

Page 11: Annual Report Final 2017 - live.golf.co.nzlive.golf.co.nz/Email/Storage/05d373c2e2a54cd8bfb241384531b2ee/… · Warren Dumelow Ray Jones Adam Lawlor Women’s Golf Committee Heather

During 2017 Frank Borren represented the club in the New Zealand Seniors team, Cam

Elers made his debut as a Wellington Representative, and Cooper Wattam and Connor

Levesque both played for the Wellington U19 team, with Connor making his debut.

Throughout the year many members take advantage of travelling overseas and visiting

clubs where we enjoy reciprocal playing privileges. In 2017 I was fortunate to visit both

Perth and Melbourne and amongst others played reciprocals Yarra Yarra (Melbourne)

and Lake Karrinyup (Perth) both of which were designed by Alex Russell who was also the

architect of Paraparaumu Beach. Through this association I was able to arrange a match

at the Royal Melbourne East Course, another course designed by him and there is now a

trophy for competition between our two clubs that may foster similar initiatives in the

future.

I would encourage all members, particularly our younger members, to take the

opportunity to learn a little about the history of our course and its designer and to proudly

share this knowledge as this is part of the fabric which makes our course so special and

such an attractive destination for so many.

The annual Mackenzie Russell Shield challenge between Titirangi and Paraparaumu

Beach was contested this year at Titirangi where home advantage prevailed, and we

were unable to retain the trophy captured in 2016 when we had home advantage.

After four years as Men’s Captain I am now standing down and would like to thank all of

those who have supported me during that tenure.

Special thanks to those who have served on the Men’s Committee and all of those who

have volunteered their time and expertise around the club and golf course.

Our club is founded upon a world class golf course which could not be maintained if it

were not for the individuals, far too many to name, who so freely volunteer their time for

the common good.

I salute you all and will no doubt join many of you in my pending “retirement”!

Glen Mitchell

Men’s Captain

WOMEN’S CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT

While 2017 was a challenging year weather wise we still managed to fit quite a lot into our

golfing calendar.

We entered teams into the Lansdowne, Mary Alward and both Silver and Bronze pennants

section of the Interclub competition. Our silver Pennants team combined with Waikanae

due to low numbers in this section. The highlight for us was the Lansdowne team reaching

the semi-finals. Thank you to our team captains (Linda, Libby, Carol and Margie) who

continue to do a great job and provide excellent support to the teams.

Our annual Ladies Open Day was held on a stunning August day. Previously this has seen

mostly 18-hole golfers take part and it was pleasing to see quite a few 9 holers enter this

year. 92 keen golfers took part. A very big thankyou to our major sponsor Finman who

without their ongoing support we couldn’t provide such a great prize pool.

The Club Championships took place in September in cool conditions. This year’s

competition saw Emma Hayward take the senior final from Christine Shum and Helen

Potter had a win over Mary McCulloch for the bronze final. In 2018 we will extend the

competition to include both a Bronze 1 and Bronze 2 section.

Our annual shootout was a hard-fought battle with all those competing playing very well.

The winner was Kate Wilson with Maureen De Bernardo runner-up. Even after 18 holes a

further shootout was necessary to decide the winner. Thanks again to Barbara Gill for your

generous sponsorship of this event and to Andrea who managed and organised the

Shootout competition.

October, we held a ‘She Loves Golf’ event. We had an overwhelming response from

those keen to taste the game, and all that attended were very enthusiastic. Big thanks go

to Mary Gardner, Kevin Smith and Glenn in the golf shop for their assistance in making this

a very successful event.

On the social front in May several of our ladies (and a few of the men) travelled to

Vanuatu to compete in ‘The Vanuatu Masters’. Over 130 players from Australia, New

Caledonia and New Zealand competed. I am very pleased to say our own Allison Fraei

won the Women’s A grade section and was announced as overalll women’s winner of the

competition. Awesome result for our club.

Earlier in the year we had a visit from a team of Perth ladies who were heading to the

World Masters. We joined the ladies for a game and had the chance to showcase our

wonderful course. It turned out several were actually NZers who had migrated to Australia.

I’m sure they will return. Andrea Mark caught up with them again when she played at the

World Masters too.

On Queen’s birthday weekend we had an afternoon tea and competition with our 9 hole

ladies. It was a mixed teams event that was very successful. More of these events are

planned in the future.

Our annual match against Levin had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

Next meeting with Levin is 24 February at Levin and October 2018 in Paraparaumu.

November was the annual ladies trip away. This year 20odd travelled to Taupo. While

away the ladies played Rotorua, Tokoroa, Little Wairakei and Taupo where we joined the

Tauhara ladies group. Thank you to Jenny, Norrey and Andrea for your organisation with

this trip and making this such a successful event.

Page 13: Annual Report Final 2017 - live.golf.co.nzlive.golf.co.nz/Email/Storage/05d373c2e2a54cd8bfb241384531b2ee/… · Warren Dumelow Ray Jones Adam Lawlor Women’s Golf Committee Heather

Over the course of the year we have made significant improvements to the way we

record and document our competitions. We have moved from paper to electronic

recording which allows results to be communicated a lot sooner and lessens the load for

our committee members. To Linda a very big thank you for your expertise and help in

making this all possible and for your ongoing support in the management of our new

processes.

One of the biggest challenges we face is how we make golf attractive to new members

who are not always in a position to devote 4 hours to a game of golf.

Lastly a very big thank you to all of our ladies who continue to volunteer with events,

tournaments, the garden, and assistance around the club.

And to my committee for their ongoing assistance and support during the year.

Happy golfing everyone.

WEDNESDAY MEN'S REPORT

It is pleasing to report another successful year for the Wednesday Men's Group.

It is appropriate in this report to acknowledge the enormous contribution of Brian

Chapman the convenor for the previous decade. His enthusiasm, commitment and

passion for this group of golfers ensured that the traditions of Wednesday golf flourished

under his stewardship and laid a solid foundation for the future.

Whilst participation for the earlier part of the 2017 year was similar to the previous year’s,

numbers increased in the later part of the year and early indications for 2018 show this

upward trend continuing.

We continue to enjoy a weekly program offering a mix of traditional events combined

with a shotgun start format on the last day of the month with a number of innovative team

based formats. Only 5 days were lost due to the weather, one less than in the previous 2

years.

This year we were again joined on 2 occasions by our female counterparts, from the ladies

groups, for mixed competition. The first in February was an Ambrose format using a mix of

coloured tees and playing for the Barry Ngan Trophy. The second event in October was a

team stableford event playing from the red tees. Both days were well supported.

Our final event in our program featured the traditional Turkey Stakes competition.

However the format was changed so that the winners of the days competition won the

Turkeys, rather than going to a one club per player shootout. This change was well

received.

After this event and prior to the annual dinner, our guest speaker club chairman Murray

Armstrong, gave an interesting insight into his world golfing travels at some of the notable

courses he has visited and played. One anecdote he shared with us was that when you

play the 17th island hole at “Sawgrass” it is even more intimidating with a club in your

hand, than watching on tv. All you see is a little dot of land with nothing but water all

around and a watery grave waiting for a misplaced shot. It seems that you are awarded

a bag tag if you successfully stay on this green and 2 putt!! Regrettably Murray was not a

recipient of such a tag.

I would like to acknowledge the assistance we received from those who generously

sponsor the NTP's on the par three holes; Kapiti Cakes & Bakery, Parkwood Retirement

Village, Fuller Tools and Alko Garden Care.

Ownership of the Bakery has now changed hands, but I am pleased to report that “Kapiti

Coast Shuttles” have taken over their sponsorship and the other sponsors are continuing

for 2018.

I would like to thank my helpers, the Golf Shop, the Admin team, and the Food &

Beverage Staff for their assistance as their contributions are invaluable and greatly help

the smooth running of the weekly events.

Congratulations to all our Trophy winners which are listed elsewhere in this report.

JUNIOR CONVENORS’ REPORT

PBGC Junior Golfers are a happy smiling bunch of kids, with ages from 4 through to 21 we

continue to produce some exciting talent. It is tough to compete with other sports and

activities but with the addition of Glenn in the Golf shop and with Kevin Smith still in charge

of our “elite” players we are keeping our player numbers up around the 50 mark.

Our highlights for 2017 were,

• Winning the Kapiti McDonald's Junior Golf Series Cup, an event played between

juniors from the four Kapiti Coast golf clubs. We have now won this event for the past 3 years.

• Making the semi finals of the Watt Cup, the loss of 2 juniors to old age made this

year a tougher prospect but a deserving result none the less. It is good for

Wellington Golf for us to share the trophy around the other clubs after winning it for 3 straight years!

• Winning the Pelorus Cup, the second-tier junior interclub division, congrats to Harry, Alec, Max and Louis.

• Cooper and Connor winning representative selection for Wellington.

In July, we held our main individual tournament of the year, the PBGC Junior Open, in

association with Capital City Ford and the Wellington Eagles Society. Jack Clout won the

boys division, Tara Raj from Wanganui won the girls division and Louis Jones won the Jason

McConkey Shield for the best stableford amongst PBGC juniors.

Our awards for 2017 were as follows. Cooper Wattam was awarded “player of the year”,

Cooper played Otaki Cup and won the U19 club champs. Connor Levesque won the

“watt cup & interclub player of the year” with a very successful campaign, and Caerwyn

Ross was awarded the “emerging player of the year” award.

Thanks to all the voluntary coaches, Ricky who tirelessly ran lessons on Thursdays, Glenn

taking over this role and growing the numbers and Kevin Smith who continues to teach

our older juniors how to succeed at the highest level.

And lastly our major sponsors, Tommy’s and Kapiti Rotary – thank you very much, we really

do appreciate your help with the continued success of our junior academy.

PARAPARAUMU BEACH GOLF CLUB INCORPORATED Financial Statements - Year Ended 31 December 2017 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’s REPORT

Opinion I have audited the special purpose financial statements of the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club Inc. (the

“Club”), which comprise a balance sheet as at 31 December, 2017, and the statement of the trading

accounts, the statement of profit and loss, and the statement of changes in equity for the year then ended,

and the notes to the financial statements, including a summary of the significant accounting policies. In my opinion, the accompanying financial statements present fairly, in all material aspects, the financial

position of the club as at 31 December, 2017, and its financial performance for the year then ended in

accordance with the special purpose financial reporting framework (SPFR). The reports have been prepared

for the special purposes of reporting to Club Members. Basis for the Opinion

I conducted my audit in accordance with the International Standards on Auditing (New Zealand) (ISA’s

(NZ)). My responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for

the Audit of the Financial Statements section of the report. I am independent of the Club in accordance

with Professional and Ethical Standard 1 (Revised) Code of Ethics for Assurance Practitioners issued by the

New Zealand Auditing and Assurance Standards Board and the International Ethics Standards Board for

Accountants’ Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (ISBEA Code), and I have fulfilled my other ethical

responsibilities in accordance with these requirements and the ISBEA Code. I believe that the evidence I

have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my audit opinion. Apart from my capacity as auditor, I have no other relationship with, or interests in, the Paraparaumu

Beach Golf Club Inc. Other Information

The Management Committee are responsible for the other information contained in the annual report. My opinion on the financial statements does not cover the other information and I do not express any form

of assurance conclusion thereon. In connection with my audit of the financial statements, my responsibility is to read the other information

and, in doing so, consider whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the financial

statements or my knowledge obtained in the audit or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. If,

based on the work I have performed, I consider that there is a material misstatement of this other

information, I am required to report this fact. I have nothing to report in this regard. The Management Committee's’ Responsibility for the Financial Statements:

The Management Committee is responsible on behalf of entity for the preparation and fair presentation of

the financial statements in accordance with the special purpose financial reporting framework (SPFR), and

for such internal control as the Management Committee determine is necessary to enable the presentation

of the financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. In preparing the financial statements, the Management Committee are responsible for assessing the club’s

ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, written matters related to going concern

and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the management committee either intends to

liquidate the club or to cease operations, or have no realistic alternative but to do so.

Emphasis of Matter

Because the financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the special purpose financial

reporting framework, and as a result, the financial statements may not be suitable for another purpose.

Page 21: Annual Report Final 2017 - live.golf.co.nzlive.golf.co.nz/Email/Storage/05d373c2e2a54cd8bfb241384531b2ee/… · Warren Dumelow Ray Jones Adam Lawlor Women’s Golf Committee Heather

PARAPARAUMU BEACH GOLF CLUB INCORPORATED Financial Statements - Year Ended 31 December 2017 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’s REPORT (continued) Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Statements

My objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole are free from

material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes my opinion.

Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but it is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with

ISA’s (NZ) will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and

are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the

economic decisions of users taken on the basis of these financial statements.

As part of an audit in accordance with ISA’s (NZ), I exercise professional judgement and maintain professional

scepticism throughout the audit. I also;

• Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or

error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is

sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for the opinion. The risk of not detecting a material

misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than one from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery,

intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control.

• Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are

appropriate to the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of

the Club’s internal control.

• Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates

and related disclosures made.

• Conclude on the appropriateness of the use of the going concern basis of accounting by the Management

Committee and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to

events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the Club’s ability to continue as a going concern. If I

conclude that a material uncertainty exists, I am required to draw attention in my auditor’s report to the

related disclosures in the financial statements or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify my opinion.

My conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of my audit report. However, future

events or conditions may cause the Club to cease to continue as a going concern.

• Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial statements, including the

disclosures, and whether the financial statements represent the underlying transactions and events in a

manner that achieves fair presentation.

• I communicate with the Management Committee regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and

timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that I

identify during my audit.

Report on Other Legal and Regulatory Requirements

o I have received all the information and explanations that I have required.
