Chester County Futures Annual Report 2014-2015

Dear Friends,

Chester County Futures continued to serve nearly 300 low-income students in five school districts in the county, and an additional 164 college students. We proudly report a 100% graduation from high school rate for the class of 2015, a graduating class of forty-eight (48); the largest in our history. Among their accomplishments, 95% matriculated to the post-secondary school of their choice and an additional 4% elected to serve our country by enlisting in a branch of the military.

In July of 2014, the Philadelphia Foundation awarded Chester County Futures $20,000 in support of our strategic planning process. Over the course of fiscal year 2015, the Board and staff worked alongside our consultants from Fairmount Ventures to craft a plan that would allow Chester County Futures to reach deeper into the communities we serve. The plan addresses these four overarching objectives for the organization:

Develop a continuum of services in each school district that would address the specific needs of low-income students transitioning from middle school to high school and again from high school into college.

Build financial sustainability for the organization with new funding initiatives and a reorganized development department.

Raise awareness throughout the county in order to attract new corporate partners in support of our programming and volunteerism needs.

Address our organizational capacity with defined strategies around board development, and staffing supports through the AmeriCorps VISTA program.

The creation of a new staffing structure provided opportunities for advancement for two internal candidates. Now in her fourth year with Chester County Futures, Marjorie Connor Dawkins, M.P.A. was promoted to Student Programs Manager and eight-year program veteran Kim Dickinson was promoted to Curriculum Manager. Department at the end of June as the Community Partnerships Manager focusing on corporate engagement.

In response to the support and training from the Phoenixville Community Health Foundation’s Incentive for Endowment, the Fund for Academic Empowerment case statement was presented to select donors; growing our endowment from $100,000 to $270,000 in cash and pledges.

Our dedication to our students remains at the core of all we do. Our staff and Board are inspired by their determination to succeed. Eighty-five percent (85%) of our students will be first-generation college students, choosing to empower their lives through education. We are proud to encourage them along the way.

Activity highlights from the 2014-15 school year include:

Our high school students participated in corporate site visits to DANSKO, SEI, Siemens, and Wawa,

A select group of female students were invited to spend day at Microsoft, sampling new products and attending technology workshops,

Students toured the campuses of Cabrini College, West Chester University and Delaware State University,

New partnerships with Denison University and Cabrini College yielded two full academic scholarships and one nearly full scholarship for deserving members of the Class of 2015,

Over two hundred (200) Chester County Futures students and twenty-five (25) Coatesville Youth Initiative students attended the annual College and Career EXPO hosted by Delaware County Community College

FUTURES AHEAD – THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM

Futures AHEAD is designed to provide early intervention to low-income students to set them on the path

toward higher education. Multi-year enrichment camps and monthly meetings focus on:

Academic accountability and success

Options in higher education

Career exploration

21st century workplace skills

Interpersonal skills

PASSPORT TO COLLEGE – THE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM

Passport to College is designed to equip and empower students for educational and life success through

after-school academic enrichment classes and real world learning opportunities. Curriculum includes

activities and discussions on relevant, grade-appropriate topics, such as:

Academic skills

SAT preparation and test-taking skills

21st century workplace skills

Financial literacy

Community volunteerism

College selection and application support

Financial aid application support

Career exploration

Technology provision

SCHOLARSHIPS – POST-SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Once a Futures student enters post-secondary school, they are eligible to receive up to $6,000 in scholarship

funds.

PROGRAM RESULTS:

100% of our Class of 2015 graduated high school on-time.

90%+ of our Class of 2015 matriculated to post-secondary school the following school year.

Since 1996, Futures has served over 900 students.
