1/1 My New JournalMy name is Marquise and I'm 11 years old. Recently, for the holidays, one of the staff members at the Davis Boys & Girls Club gave me a journal. As a way to express myself and remember all the fun things I do at the Clubs, they encouraged me to write down all of my experiences during the year. I've been going to the Clubs since I was five, and it's a place I love to be. Every day I get to see the staff members who really care about me, have fun with my friends, eat a meal, practice my art skills and work on my homework. The Clubs are a place for every kid in Milwaukee like me.

I think 2018 is going to be the best year yet! My Club is like my second home, and I'm sure there will be a lot to do and experience. I'm both excited and nervous for the new year, but I know I'll get to meet new friends, go new places and try all sorts of things I haven't before.

New Year’s Resolutions 1) Try a new program at my Club 2) Improve my grades at school3) Make new friends 4) Draw more pictures 5) Volunteer in my community

1/22 New Games RoomToday, I was visiting my friend at the Pieper-Hillside Club, and I got to see their new games room. The Milwaukee Brewers helped create a new space that looks like a real locker room with brand new gaming equipment like a pool table, air hockey table and televisions. There’s even a cool Miller Park mural and lockers along the walls. Best of all, my friend said when the new space was opened, Bernie Brewer and the racing sausages came by to visit.

2/19 STEM FieldtripSince there was no school today, a group of us from the Davis Club got to take a field trip to the Third Ward to visit Eppstein Uhen. I hadn’t heard of them before, but they do architecture around the city, which is really cool because I love learning about STEM. We got to tour their office and learn about architecture and engineering. Toward the end of the visit we got to hear about how they’re building the new U.S. Cellular Connection Stage at Summerfest. They let us see what the new stage will look like using virtual reality headsets, and we all get to take a trip to Summerfest later this year to visit the new stage with people from U.S. Cellular when it’s ready!

3/9 Youth of the YearAfter I got home from the Club today, I was eating dinner with my family and on the news I saw a story about Boys & Girls Clubs. Daijahnay Canady was named the 2018 Wisconsin Youth of the Year. She went to Green Bay and competed against teens from all over the state, which is super cool. I’ve heard people at my Club talk about Youth of the Year before, and it seems like a really big deal, especially to win in Wisconsin. Hopefully in a couple years when I’m a teenager I can become Youth of the Year.

3/28 A Rough DaySometimes, school isn’t very fun. I was having trouble with some of the problems in class today, and after school when I went to my Club I just wanted to play in the gym. I was trying to play basketball, but my friend Jimmy and I got into a big fight. I was really mad at him. Mr. �mar, who was in the gym with us, sat us down to talk through what was happening. It turns out Jimmy was having a bad day too. I learned that I should try my best not to get mad right away when something bothers me. Mr. Omar was really helpful, and after we all talked he played basketball with us until it was time to go home.

4/27 College Signing DayI know I haven’t written in a while, but I’ve been super busy. Last night, my mom, grandma and I went to Direct Supply to cheer on my older sister Kima at Boys & Girls Clubs College Signing Day. My sister and all her friends at the Clubs are getting ready to graduate high school, and head to college this fall. I’m super proud of Kima, and excited for her to go to college, but I’ll miss her when she leaves. She always talks about how when I’m old enough, I need to join the Clubs’ Graduation Plus program. All the staff there have helped her graduate with a 3.8 GPA, and get into the University of Wisconsin. Best of all, Grad Plus helped her get into college debt free, which my parents are really happy about.

5/24 Meeting Giannis!My friend Jamal is part of the Clubs' Emerging Athletes Basketball League, and today he got to meet Giannis Antetokounmpo!! He went with some friends to a Dick’s Sporting Goods store, and he just showed up, like out of nowhere with jerseys and everything. They all received a $100 gift card for the store, got to shop with Giannis, and even got photos and autographs. Hopefully one day I get to meet a famous athlete.

5/26 R.B.I. SupriseEarlier in the spring, I decided to join the Clubs R.B.I. program. I’ve always loved baseball, but have been anxious about joining an actual team. Today all the members got a big surprise! As we were getting ready to head out to practice, Lorenzo Cain and Jeremy Jeffress of the Milwaukee Brewers came by. They brought us new bats, balls, helmets and other equipment, and talked to us about why doing well in school is important. They even stuck around to play catch before they had to leave. It was a great day. I can’t wait to show Jamal the photos I took.

5 6/10 Summer FunNow that school is done for the year, I get to spend my whole day at the Clubs while my mom is at work. Usually, I’m only at my Club for a few hours but during the summer I get to be there from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Summer at the Clubs is my favorite. We get to go on field trips, try new activities and even get multiple meals a day, which I know is my mom’s favorite part. I can’t wait for a great summer!

6/21 Football Field TripYesterday, we got to take our second field trip this week! A group of us visited the Mary Ryan Club in Sherman Park. When we go there, we were all greeted by people who work at Kohl’s, who were all super nice and friendly. The Kohl’s employees helped us participate in a bunch of activities like making healthy snacks, and football drills with the Green Bay Packers! It was a ton of fun and I got to meet kids from other Clubs.

7/8 Heading to CampMy mom signed me up to attend Camp Whitcomb/Mason starting tomorrow, and I’m super nervous. I’ll be gone for the whole week. I’ve never been gone from home that long before, and I’ve never really been outside of the city. They said that Camp is almost 300 acres, which sounds like a lot, and I’ll get to do things like tubing, fishing, hiking and zip lining. Right now, I’m most excited to eat s’mores...they’re my favorite. I wonder what kind of animals I’ll see. Hopefully there aren’t any bears.

7/13 What a Week!I just got home from Camp, and I can’t wait to go back again! I was anxious the first day, but the counselors were great. Mr. Jon and Mr. Sam were my cabin counselors, and they sang camp songs with us and showed us a bunch of other fun activities that I’ve never tried before. I also met a bunch of new friends like Oscar, Angela and Kevin. We went on the lake together, hung out by the camp fire at night and played a bunch of field games. They even go to a Club not too far away from mine! I learned that Camp serves more than 10,000 people annualy.

8/2 Community ServiceMy friend Aaron and I signed up for Torch Club recently because we wanted to help give back to our Club and nearby community. Our Torch Club leader, Mr. Matt, told us about a service project another group of Club kids recently organized. Members from the Cass Street Club created a lemonade stand where all the profits were donated to the family of fallen Officer Michael Michalski. It’s a really great project and inspired our Torch Club to do something just as helpful.

8/24 B-Day Fun Happy birthday to me! I’m officially 12 years old today. When I got to the Club, the Club Manager had a special birthday card for me, and I got to pick what game we played in the gym. It’s was a great day to help end a great summer. I’ve met a ton of new friends and got to visit places like Wisconsin Dells and the Milwaukee Zoo. I hope the school year is just as amazing.

8/6 Arts Shout �utToday we had a big celebration at the Davis Club. Some of my fellow Club members

won national awards! The Davis Dancers just got back from Los Angeles recently where

they won first place at the Monsters of Hip-Hop national dance competition. I have a

couple friends on the dance team and they worked really hard this year. Another one

of my fellow Club members, Maria, also won a national competition! She created a

design and submitted it to Family Dollar. They liked her design the best and it will be

featured on paper towel rolls sold all across the county. That’s pretty cool.

9/10 New School YearSchool started this week, and I'm glad to see some friends again I've missed over the summer. The worst part of school though is math, it has been my least favorite subject since I was little. At my Club, I'm starting a program called MarVan Scholars. It's a computer program that will help me with math and reading. They said last year, all the Club members in the program spent more than 2 million minutes on reading and math activities.

9/19 Bike SHopAfter school today I went with my friend to the Mary Ryan Club, and while I was there we got to check out their bike shop. Kids who work there get the chance to learn about how to build and repair bikes, and even get to work with groups like Bublr, Dream Bikes and more. They said I can bring my bike by any time for a free tune-up.

10/1 Special AssemblyAll of us at Davis today gathered in the gym for an assembly. We had a couple guest speakers, including someone from Boys & Girls Clubs who told us all about the organization. I learned that there are more than 40 Clubs like mine in Milwaukee, and that the Clubs support nearly 50,000 kids and teens every year! That’s a lot of kids. I bet it must take a lot of people and effort to make that all happen.

10/16 A Tough Day at SchoolSometimes it can be really hard to focus at school. Toward the end of the day I kept feeling really hungry, and wasn’t listening to the teacher and got in trouble. One of my favorite things about going to Boys & Girls Clubs after school is I always get a meal, and I always feel better afterwards. I even heard a staff member say that all the Clubs combine to serve nearly a million meals every year. That’s a lot of food!

11/6 Celebrating G.I.R.L.SMy friend Leslie was showing me today all these cool photos from the Celebrating G.I.R.L.S event she got to be a part of yesterday. They had a big event where people got to come and chat with her and other girls throughout the Clubs about all the interesting things they do throughout the year. Leslie loves the G.I.R.L.S program, especially how they help her through everyday issues, while also getting opportunities to grow life skills and express herself. She thinks the program has helped her become more confident.

11/20 What I'm Thankful For...Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and this year I'm thankful for all my friends, my family and my Boys & Girls Club. The Clubs are always so supportive, and are a place I can be myself. I wish more kids got the chance to experience all the amazing things the Clubs have to offer!

12/31 A Special YearIt’s crazy to think that 2018 is almost over. I set some goals for myself this year to meet new friends, and try new activities, and I did both. It was a great school year, and Boys & Girls Clubs helped me grow and learn so much. I know that 2019 will be just as awesome, and I wish I could thank each and every person that provided me support this last year.

12/17 Holiday PartyThe holidays are always such a fun time, and today my Club had our annual holiday party! The staff decorated the gym to look like a winter wonderland, and had all sorts of festive games and activities for us. We even got a special meal! And the best part was before we all went home, everyone got a gift. The Clubs always make all of us feel so happy around the holidays.
