Our PhilosophyOurorganizationisbasedonanokillandnocagephilosophy: saving both adoptable (healthy andfreeofseriousbehaviouralproblems)andtreatable(medical treatment or behavioural training) dogsandcats,regardlessofageordisability.Cagesarereplacedwith“dogcabins”and“catchalets”,indoorandoutdoorplayareas,inastress-reducedanimal-friendlyenvironment.
Our VisionProvideabandonedcatsanddogswithloveandcareinastressfreeenvironmentuntiltheyareunitedwiththeir“foreverfamily”.

NamedinlovinghonorofdonorFrankSojonky’swife,theCarlaCummingAdoptionCentreislikenootheranimaladoptionfa-cility!TheCentreisnestledintheheartoftheBowValleyon2.2acresofprovincially-leasedlandwithpanoramicviews,naturalgreenspace,andeasyvisitoraccess.
TheCentreisa3,500squarefootbuildingwithalargeoff-leashpark,woodedwalkingtrails,andasecurefenceline.
RobertMitchellofRobertMitchellMasterHomes(Canmore,Alberta)donatedhisconstructionmanagementexpertiseen-suringtheCentreincorporatedthelatesttechnologies,prod-ucts,andpracticesforhealthyindoorairquality,greaterenergyefficiency,reducedoverallgreenhousegasemissions,andthegeneralpreservationofournaturalresources.
TheseeffortsresultedinNaturalResourcesCanadarecognizingtheCentreasenergyefficientindesign.Greenbuildingsareofhigherquality,lastlonger,andcostlesstooperate;thelong-termfinancialsavingsaresignificant,especiallyforanon-profitorganizationwhereeverydollarmatters.TheBowValleySPCAisproudthatithasbuiltahomethatre-spectsthehealthandwellbeingofbothitsoccupantsandtheenvironment,whilecreatinganexcellentmodelforfutureadop-tioncentresacrossthecountry.WeopenedJune2,2007.

EverydogandcatthatcomestotheCarlaCummingSojonkyAdoptionCentrearescannedformi-crochipidentificationandidentifyingtattoostobecertaintheyarenotsimplylostpets.(Inseveralremarkablecasesdogshavebeenreunitedwiththeirlonglostownersprovidinganimmediatehappyending.)
Followingadmission,eachanimalisscheduledforaveterinaryexaminationtoevaluateanyhealthproblemsandifnecessarytoschedulespay/neutersurgery.EveryanimalthatisadoptedfortheBowValleySPCAisspayed/neuteredbeforebeingplacedwiththeirnewfamily.Weacceptdogsandcatsregardlessorageordisability.
Eachdogorcatisob-servedbythestafftoassuretheyareadapting
totheirnewenvironmentandspecialcareistakentodeterminetheirbehaviourpatterns.Behaviouralassessmentisprovidedforallofthedogstodetermineifanyspecialtrainingisrequiredandrecommendthetypeoffamily(otherdogs,cats,youngchildren)thatwouldbeeasiestforthedogtoadaptto.
Staffandvolunteersworkwiththedogspriortotheiradoptiontoimplementsuggestionsfromtheassessment.Staffexperienceisalsoincorporatedintothefinalassessmentofeachdog.

KevinandIrecentlytookPilgrimtoWhiteswanLakeinBC...hethoroughlyenjoyedhisfirstlongcarride(aboutthreehours),stuffinghisnoseoutthewindow,andlovedhangingaroundthecampsiteandgoinghiking.Lately,whilespendingtimeindowntownCanmore,he’sbeenmakingfriends,canineandhumanalike.IthoughthisfriendsattheBVSPCAwouldliketoknowthathe’senjoyingthesummertimewithhisnewfamily!~KellyMcClure
TitanwaspickedupbyCanmoreBy-law.Hewasskinnyandmattedandappearedtohavebeenonhisownforweeksifnotmonths.TheAdoptionCentreManager(SonyaWhite)usedherchipscannerandunbelievablyfoundamicrochipidentifyingtheownerasabreederinBritishColumbiaforPortugueseWaterDogs.ItturnedoutthatthebreederusedtoraiseGermanShepherdsandthisdogwasactuallyhers.Sheimmediatelydroppedevery-thinganddrovetoCanmore.Thisisthetwoofthemunited.
Sonyasaid,“ItookafewpicsofTitanwithhis“mom”.Hewasoverjoyedtoseeher-soexcited-goteveryonecrying!Theywerethrilledthatwehadtakencareofhimandthattheygothimback!I’msohappyforthedog-hewassuretryingtotellsomestories-Iwishwecouldunderstand!Yaymicrochips!!

Our Programs
In2009,wehadnearlytwodozenschoolgroupsthatvisitedtheAdoptionCentre.Eachgroupwasshownallofthedogsandcatsandallowedtointeract,underadultsupervision,withthecatsanddogswholikechildrenandtheiratten-tion.Thechildrenwereallprovidedinforma-tionabouttheneedforspay/neuterandhowtosafelyapproachanewdogorcat.
AvolunteerfromtheBowValleySPCAalsovisitedthelocalgradeschoolsandmadepre-sentationsonbeingsafewithadogorcat.ThisprogramwasfocusedonGrade1and2children,butothergradelevelswerealsoaddressed.
ThisworkwassupportedbytheKayakFundthroughtheCalgaryFoundation.
School Outreach
The Cinderella Fundwascreatedin2008butcameintoitsownin2009.Thisfundwasdevelopedtoprovidetheexceptionalcarethatissometimesrequired.Weexpended$5887formedicalandbehaviouralcareforourspecialneedsdogsandcats.Thecareincludedorthopedicsurgery,treatmentfordiabetes,heartdiseaseandbehaviouraltrainingfordogsinneedof“betterman-ners”.
A Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program (SNAP) wasfinalizedin2009.ThispilotprogramtargetedBowValleypetownerswithlowincomes.Wewillbeabletoofferspay/neuterto15dogsandcatsintheBowValleywhowouldotherwiselikelygounaltered.Theprogramwillbemorefullyimple-mentedin2010.
Open Paws Training wasdevelopedandimplementedbyoneofourlocalveterinariansanddogtrainers.Theprogramconsistsoffoursessionsandteachesvolunteershowtosafelyworkwithdogs(andtoalesserextentcats).Completionoftheprogramqualifiesthevolunteertoworkwithdogsthataredesignatedsafefortheirleveloftraining.
The Sue Sternberg Conference heldinCanmore,Albertawasasuccessforthenearly100attend-ees.Sheprovidedinformationabouttrainingandevaluatingabandoneddogsinashelterenvi-ronment.ThisconferencewasonlyabletobepresentedbecauseofthegeneroussupportoftheKayakFundthroughtheCalgaryFoundationandNutram.

Our Volunteers
WeimplementedtheOpenPawstrainingprogramforstaffandvol-unteerssothatthestaffknowwhattoexpectfromvolunteersthatwalkdogs,groomcatsorhelpwithcleaningintermsoftheirabilitytoworkwiththeanimalsinapositiveway.Thisprogramalsoprovidesinformationthatisusefulforvolun-teerstoworkwiththeirowndogsorcats.
Currentlywehaveseveraldozenvolunteersthataredirectlyinvolvedinthecareandfeedingoftheresidents.Additionally,ourpaidstaffalsovolunteeralotoftheirtimeforhelpingwitheventsandotherfundraisingactivi-ties.
Ourvolunteersloggedover3000hoursofvolunteertimein2009.Withoutdoubt,wecouldnotbesuccessfulwithouttheongoing,cheer-fulsupportofourdedicatedvolunteers.Asoneofourdedicatedvolunteerssaid.“IjustfeelsogoodwhenIgetachancetocomehereanddosomethingthatbenefitsthedogsandcats.Itishardtogetthatkindoffeelinganyplaceelseinmylife.Iamnotsurewhoisrescuingwho.”

Our Financials
Despitetheeconomicclimateof2009,thesuccessfulfundraisingeffortsoftheBowValleySPCAproducedover$245,000inrevenues.Theserevenuestogetherwith$33,490raisedinprioryearscoveredthecoststooperatetheCarlaCummingSojonkyAdoptionCentrefortheyear.Thankstoourmanygenerousdonors,sponsorsandvolunteers,theBowValleySPCAwasabletoprovidemuchneededfood,shelter,veterinarycareandtrainingfortheCCSAC’sfurryresi-dentsincludingthespecialcarerequiredforthebeneficiariesofourCinderellafund.
Wesuccessfullyadoptedout90catsand65dogs.
