PRESIDENT’S REPORT

In a very good year, special thanks to David Heyzer (Executive Officer), Ron Barber (Chairman) and to the Board of Management. Their tireless contributions to Adelaide Turf (ATCA) throughout the season have been considerable. Congratulations also go to all Premiership teams, Player Life Members, player representatives, ATCA Team of the Year selections, trophy winners and to the Spirit of Cricket Award winner. These achievements are all significant and justly acknowledge effort, skill and ethics. I also wish to also recognise the commitment and hard work of the Adelaide Turf Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association. Adelaide Turf thanks members for their continual high levels of support. SAMCA Cup provides opportunities for Junior and Senior players to represent ATCA in inter-association games. Results were generally sound and experience gained should continue to help players develop their cricket skills. Also, well done to all players and supporters involved in ATCA Junior programs. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. I can further remark that Adelaide Turf Cricket is a long established, experienced and very successful association. However, each year we are continually challenged by issues relating to poor player behaviour. Some years ago, Adelaide Turf moved to address this issue by adopting an own version of the principles of The Spirit of Cricket...and indeed, these principles have been supported by annual awards to high achievers. The concept encourages players and clubs to embrace the game of cricket in a positive spirit. The word "Spirit" can stand for themes such as respect, strength, courage, attitude, character, determination, mood, positivity, moral fibre, inner self and life force, just to name some...indeed, all life-building concepts in their own right. Recently, the Marylebone Cricket Club (the governing body for the laws of world cricket), better known as the "MCC", introduced their version of "The Spirit" ...I thought it might be interesting to share the main points in that report....

THE "MCC" PREAMBLE – THE SPIRIT OF CRICKET *Cricket owes much of its appeal and enjoyment to the fact that it should be played not only according to the Laws, but also within the Spirit of Cricket. *The major responsibility for ensuring fair play rests with the captains, but extends to all players, umpires and, especially in junior cricket, teachers, coaches and parents. *Respect is central to the Spirit of Cricket: -Respect your captain, team-mates, opponents and the authority of the umpires. -Play hard and play fair. -Accept the umpire’s decision. -Create a positive atmosphere by your own conduct, and encourage others to do likewise. -Show self-discipline, even when things go against you. -Congratulate the opposition on their successes, and enjoy those of your own team. -Thank the officials and your opposition at the end of the match, whatever the result. *Cricket is an exciting game that encourages leadership, friendship and teamwork, which brings together people from different nationalities, cultures and religions, especially when played within the Spirit of Cricket.

While the wording of the ATCA and MCC codes differ a little, SIMILAR, SIMPLE MESSAGES are CONVEYED: viz *The game can be played hard and positively, but actions should remain disciplined, whilst still maintaining a courteous and respectful attitude *If you embrace the ideals of the game, you might just find the game will positively embrace you. Bob Wigley President ATCA

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

2016-17 has been a successful season for the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association (ATCA). This can only be achieved by players, club officials, volunteers and all who contribute so much throughout the year. Unfortunately, the weather again interrupted play during the season in both the Senior and Junior competitions. Some excellent cricket was played during the finals and congratulations to all premiership winners in both Seniors and Juniors. The T20 competition was again a success, with the final played under lights at the Adelaide Oval. Congratulations also to Grange, on winning Division 1. Association teams participated in the SAMCA competition, in which the U/21 and the ATCA North U/15 were successful. Thank you to all players, coaches and officials involved in this SAMCA series. ATCA remains in a sound financial position, but rising costs are still a concern to the Board of Management. Our Sponsorship Committee continues to seek more sponsors, so that we can assist in reducing the expenses for clubs. To our valued sponsors, thank you for your continued support of our Association. After appealing to all clubs last year, the Board was very disappointed with the number of serious issues the Compliance Panel and Tribunal had to deal with. When presenting the Spirit of Cricket Award at the presentation night, Mr Jeff Emmel, our Vice President, spoke of the need for cricket to be played in accordance with the Spirit of Cricket, which is widely publicised throughout all forms of the game. It would be beneficial for clubs to encourage all players to familiarise themselves with this. Thank you to the President, Doug French, Secretary, Ian Morris and members of the Umpires and Scorers Association, for their support throughout the season, as we continue to work together for the benefit of cricket. The combined ATCA and ATCUSA Annual Presentation night, held at the Arkaba Hotel, was once again a sell-out. Thank you to all who organised this successful event. Apologies were received from our Patron, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, due to their prior official engagements. Wayne Phillips again performed the Master of Ceremony duties and ensured the night ran smoothly. Thank you, Wayne. Congratulations to all award winners and those players who were selected in the ATCA Team of the Year. The Junior Presentation night at Northgate Community and Sports Club, was again well supported. Thank you to all players, coaches, team managers and parents, for making the junior competition such a success. The Bill Alchin Memorial Award for the U/17 Player of the Year was won by Samuel Cuconits from the Modbury Cricket Club and congratulations to all award winners. Thank you also to David Heyzer, Raj Singh and the Northgate Community Club for ensuring the evening proceeded smoothly. In May this year, my wife and I were invited to the Grange Cricket Club’s Presentation Night. This was also a culmination of their celebrations of 50 years affiliation with the ATCA, and thank you all for a very enjoyable evening. The ATCA continues to have a positive association with SACA, SAMCA and other Community Cricket organisations and many thanks to our Executive Officer, David Heyzer, who very efficiently administers the office of the ATCA. To Administrative Assistant, Larraine Markesinis, thank you also for your contributions. My sincere thanks to our President Bob Wigley, Vice President Jeff Emmel and all Board members for your valued efforts and support. Throughout the season, the Board was called upon to make some very hard decisions and at all times, these were made for the betterment of the Association. We will continue to promote both Senior and Junior cricket and encourage new clubs, players, officials and volunteers to become involved in the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association. Wishing you all a very successful 2017-18 season! Ron Barber Chairman

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

I submit for consideration the 2017 Adelaide Turf Cricket Association’s Annual Report, which summarises the season. My role as Executive Officer over the last 7 years has continued to grow with new challenges faced on a consistent basis, proving to be a testing but rewarding experience. In-season challenges dealing with player behaviour makes the role of the Executive Officer demanding with considerable resources used in dealing with such matters.

A total of 50 Clubs participated, fielding 164 senior teams, 49 junior teams and 39 sub junior teams. The introduction of the sub junior competition was a pilot program undertaken at the request of five Association Southern Clubs to introduce a sub junior competition encompassing U10, U12 and U14 competitions, under the banner of the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association. This has proven to be a successful experiment that will benefit the Association. The Association has also seen the Twenty/20 competition continue to grow with 72 teams participating in the 2016/17 season.

The Association continues to have a strong and constant Board of Management consisting of 11 dedicated people that continue to support me in the advancement of the Association. I would like to thank Mr Ron Barber, Chairman; Mr Bob Wigley, President; Mr Peter Smith, Treasurer and Mr Jeff Emmel, Vice President for their continued guidance on the direction the Association is taking

I feel further comment is required on what I believe the most unpleasant duties of the Executive Officer in dealing with players and clubs that continue to breach the ATCA Code of Conduct, resulting in a record number of suspensions handed down this season. The Association remains committed to the game of cricket being played within the Spirit of the Game, and will continue to increase penalties that severely penalise clubs that continue to breach the Associations bylaws. My sincere thanks go to Greg Gade and his Compliance Committee for their assistance in this area. The volunteers who presided over these often complex and challenging matters should receive far more commendation, simple words cannot justify their dedication shown in dealing with such matters.

The Association continues its successful relationship with SACA whose responsibility for the coordination and management of ATCUSA umpires is now starting to bear fruit with many new umpires introduced into the system. My thanks go out to Sarah Fry, SACA’s State Umpiring Leader who is responsible for carrying out this very challenging task.

I would like to acknowledge the continued support the ATCA has received from the South Australian Cricket Association. The two Associations have formed an excellent working relationship over many years and I look forward to continuing to build a stronger link between both Associations. I would particularly like to thank SACA Cricket Operations Manager, Mr Shane Bernhardt and his team for their guidance throughout the season.

My role of Executive Officer finds me travelling to various games of cricket where I have the pleasure of watching some tremendous cricket. The highlight of the season taking place at Lindblom Park which saw Pooraka Cricket Club defeat Grange Cricket Club in the A1 Premier Grade Grand-Final.

Congratulations must also go to Grange Cricket Club in winning the “City Holden” T/20 Division1 Grand-Final defeating Prince Alfred Old Collegians at the magnificent Adelaide Oval. Congratulations to all other teams in all Senior and Junior grades who have been recognised with premierships.

The Annual Senior Presentation night was once again held at the Arkaba Hotel with over 300 people attending with some of the major award winners being:

Jeff Emmel Spirit of Cricket Award – Reynella Cricket Club

A1 Player of the Year – Mark Hanson– Pooraka Cricket Club

ATCA Club of the Year – Reynella Cricket Club

Club Secretary of the Year – Ben Lobban – Prince Alfred Old Collegians Cricket Club Congratulations must go to all other award winners recognised on the night.

The performance of teams representing the association in the various SAMCA Cup competitions over the summer was reasonable and my personal thanks go out to the senior coach Steve Sykes; U21 coach, Gordon Smith and U15 coaches Muditha Maduwantha, Nigel Madden and Marty Jolly. The ATCA were once again a dominant force in the U21 and U15 competitions but unfortunately unsuccessful in the senior SAMCA Cup.

Sponsorship continues to be a focus for the Association with new initiatives to be introduced for the coming season. The Association is grateful to its sponsor partners Kookaburra Sports, Greg Chappell Cricket Centre, City Holden, Mega Courts Indoor Sports and National Australia Bank for their continued support. I trust that clubs appreciate and support our sponsors.

I also acknowledge the quality administrative assistance I have received from Larraine Markesinis, her performance often extends beyond the scope of her duty statement, and for that I am most grateful.

In closing, I thank all the club officials for their contributions to the game of cricket. I particularly thank the secretaries for their efforts and I look forward to working with clubs again in season 2017/18. Thanks to all club personnel and Board Members that form the various ATCA sub-committees; your efforts are truly appreciated. David Heyzer Executive Officer

UMPIRE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Season 2016-17 was a busy one with SACA appointing umpires to more Associations and matches than ever before. New milestones were reached, many new umpires were accredited while current umpires renewed their accreditation and attend numerous training sessions to overall develop as individuals. The annual umpiring launch was taken to a different location to introduce the new season and was held at the South Australian Maritime Museum and One and All Sailing Ship where guests reflected on the history of umpiring in this state. Law Study nights then commenced with umpires working through questions and scenarios within their panels led by their umpire coach. In September, the seminar was held at the Rydges South Park where umpires attended a full day of workshops which included a presentation from Cricket Australia’s National Umpire Coach, Ian Lock as well as sessions on field craft, team work and mental preparation. Day 2 of the seminar was attended by panel 1 umpires and focussed on self-awareness, managing conflict and vision dynamics. Attended by Association representatives the biannual State Umpiring Forum was also held on this weekend and provided fruitful discussion on the future of umpiring in South Australia. SACA also continued to progress in its goal to consolidate and manage umpire resources throughout metropolitan cricket. This resulted in more than 6,100 individual umpire appointments to over 90 grades of competition. There was an in increase in appointments for ATCA again this season to over 1,700 which continues to grow and includes the appointments of new umpires to both the senior and junior competitions. ATCA umpires also officiated in a number of other competitions including the Under 12 and Under 17 Shield, Under 14 and Under 16 Country Cup and the Cricket Nations Cup. These appointments only being possible through ATCA’s strong umpiring partnership with SACA. SACA targets were exceeded in regards to the recruitment and training of new umpires which included 4 ATCA umpires successfully completing their Representative Officiating Accreditation and a number of other umpires received a certificate in Advanced Officiating General Principles. More than 70 umpires renewed their current accreditation and over 700 participants attended 32 umpire training sessions. The performance of all umpires across the ATCA competition was continually measured throughout the season from team captains and SACA’s umpire coaches. The results were pleasing with more umpires assessed by a coach than in previous seasons and a satisfactory overall rating at seasons end. I would like to acknowledge the work that Neil Poulton has done for umpiring in South Australia and thank him for his contribution to SACA. I also offer my congratulations to everyone who excelled, achieved their goals and contributed to the success of both umpiring and cricket in the past season and look forward to continuing to work with you again in the coming season. Sarah Fry SACA State Umpiring Leader

COMPLIANCE REPORT

Each year for the last few seasons I have had occasion to mention the disturbingly increasing trend of the number of player reports. Whereas one report is too many, the 2016-17 season saw upwards of some 30 plus reports laid against players whether as a direct result of Umpire/Captain reports or charges laid by the ATCA under the Bylaws. The reports, outside of the normal reports laid for breaches under the ATCA Code of Conduct Guidelines, ranged from Breaches of the Social Media Policy, Racial Vilification Policy through to action taken under the SACA Affiliates and Club Protection Policy. On the latter the ATCA with assistance from the SACA found that the club in applying its own internal disciplinary action had through its own processes denied the individual natural justice and as a consequence the previously imposed ban was lifted. In relation to the two found breaches of the Social Media policy, clubs need to ensure that their players are properly aware and educated in understanding that comments made via social media platforms do not have the potential to damage (either directly or indirectly) both the ATCA and those involved in the ATCA. Of the charges laid under the Code of Conduct guidelines some twenty one (21) players were found guilty and had to serve match bans, another seven (7) had reprimands and fines recorded against their names. Of the matters referred to a Commissioner’s Hearing one was dismissed with the Commissioner finding that the allegation had not been found out. Two further appeals saw the penalty reduced with a further two (2) cases resulting in the Commissioner increasing the originally imposed penalty of the CEP, in fact one saw the recommended penalty of three (3) matches and four(4) match point penalties increased to a six (6) match ban and imposition of an 11 match point penalty. Whereas I mentioned above about clubs needing to make players aware of the Social Media Policy, clubs themselves need to be properly schooled in how the reporting system works. It was a complete lack of understanding on that front that lead to both the dismissal and the increase in penalty appeals decisions. Many of the imposed penalties saw the implementation of match point penalties with the most severe seeing a particular side lose 20 match points. In regards to Match Point Penalties the Bylaws allow an extra imposition when a club has three (3) or more players found guilty during the season. The ATCA is now looking at making changes to that system, even more so after the number of matters dealt with last year, to now spreading those penalties across all the club’s teams as opposed to just the team from which the latest offending player had participated in. I am sure that penalising the A Grade team every time an offence occurs may make clubs sit up and take more notice of trying to control player behaviour. The one pleasing aspect is that the upgraded player registration process only resulted in a minor number of indiscretions, and team bylaw breaches were also well down on previous seasons. In closing, I would like to thank the tireless efforts of the following individuals who had the thankless task of dealing with all these reports, they are in no particular order: Mark Twiggs, Mark Wishart, Rajesh Singh, Don von Einem, Anthony Crocker and Adam Crichton. It also goes again without saying that the efforts of the Executive Officer on this front is both time consuming and enormous, and I am sure his time and efforts are best spent in dealing with purely matters of cricket. Greg Gade Chairperson Compliance Committee
